Films that are not yet on DVD (in the US)

Films worth seeing that can only be found on VHS (and some are hard to find even in that format). *I think a few of these were released at some point on DVD but are now expensive or very hard to find.

A Song Is Born
Finally coming out on DVD in April 2009. Enjoyable film with Danny Kaye and Virginia Mayo, including a large cast of musical talents such as Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, and Tommy Dorsey. Kaye plays a dorky musicologist who meets Mayo's tough gangster's moll; mayhem ensues as Kaye becomes smitten with Mayo who is hiding out from dangerous types - at the same time he discovers the "new music" of jazz, which is played throughout by the jazz greats of their time. A remake of "Ball of Fire", which I haven't seen. This is great for jazz fans, Danny Kaye fans, and old movie fans in general.

Slow-moving but fascinating for anyone interested in the story of the Mad King, Ludwig II. Great costumes and set design.

Midnight Lace (1960,  R)
Midnight Lace
Not a typical Doris Day film. Set in London, Doris's character is terrorized by someone she can't see through the London fog. Rex Harrison plays her husband. A suspenseful old movie. It's pretty hard to find (only on VHS).

Strays
This movie is hilarious. A pack of ominous stray cats takes over a nice family's house, and the family must fight them off. There are some ridiculous fight scenes between the actors and some non-terrifying cat puppets. Lots of fake, laugh-inducing mass cat yowling, as well. Makes me laugh just thinking about it! I mean, I never really thought about a gang of psychotic cats plotting to take over my basement, but now... I'm shaking in me boots. "They have nine lives...we only have one." Classic.

The Blue Gardenia
Obscure '50s movie starring Anne Baxter from All About Eve. Sort of a film noir/whodunit that is pretty engaging. Raymond Burr plays a total lech!
