I guess these could be on my "favorites" list. The "stars" are my opinion only. I think 5 stars means I would be willing to watch it again and could enjoy it.

Bobby (2006,  R)
Bobby
If there were nothing in this movie but Bobby's speeches at the end, it would be worth seeing. One commentator said the characters were not developed and shallow. Perhaps. But we get a bird's eye view of a lot of what that time was like. And Bobby's message was that we are deeper and richer and better, that we are fragmented and scattered, but we can find common ground. The superficial in the movie and in our lives is what divides and angers us; Kennedy called us to what is essential and to what makes us one. I didn't want to see this movie. I was afraid it would be too painful. What a loss it would have been to not be reminded of the troubles and the promise of those days.

Brassed Off (1997,  R)
Brassed Off
It may start off as a brass band but ends up a brass orchestra. GREAT music. And the story is good too; if you want details, read the summary that pops up when you put your mouse over the movie cover. Or trust me, and watch it!
3
Dead Poets Society (1989,  PG)
Dead Poets Society
totally excellent movie
4
Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994,  R)
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Powerful and warm. I love the eulogy at the funeral - can't find a copy of it.
5
The Full Monty (1997,  R)
The Full Monty
Good story, good actors, good fun. and a few bare male butts !!
6
The Goonies (1985,  PG)
The Goonies
Fun, interesting, and enjoyable again and again.
7
The Holiday (2006,  PG-13)
The Holiday
WOW! I found this by accident. Had no expectations. LOVE it! Predicatable? So what! Not every love story needs to end with cancer. Creative, lovely, gentle, angry, funny, and about real problems. Never loved some who didn't love you back? Lucky you! Never found love when you didn't expect it or perhaps even want it? I did. And Eli Wallach's role is superb: a total bonus to the rest of the movie, but not really separate from it.
8
Ice Age 2: The Meltdown (2006,  PG)
Ice Age 2: The Meltdown
This is as much fun as the first one. Great characters. Love that poor squirrel.
9
The Illusionist (2006,  PG-13)
The Illusionist
beautifullly done; visual treat; good story; worth seeing - at least once.
10
Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing & Charm School (2006,  PG-13)
Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing & Charm School
Robert Carlyle can dance! He can also act. It is a movie within a movie - and both are good. I give it five stars - it's a movie I would gladly watch again ... and again.
11
Miss Potter (2007,  PG)
Miss Potter
Magic. Watch an introverted, fragile, creative woman transform into an independant, strong, conservatinalist and environmentalist, Not today! She was born during the reign of Queen Victoria and raised by parents who believed they had the right to permit or forbid her to marry when she was in her early thirties. The love story is beautiful. The animation is just enough to give a peek at her gifted imagination. The varied relationships in this movie are superb.
12
Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont (2005,  Unrated)
Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont
Wonderful and beautifully told story. Joan Plowright and Rupert Friend are excellent. My Flixter good friend 'svmainus' says, in her review, it is "endearing and memorable". Her review was how I found this movie.
13
Peaceful Warrior (2006,  PG-13)
Peaceful Warrior
There is fact in this story; there is also "emotional fact" that is told like part of the story. There is so much to learn here; I've only watched it twice and know there is more there to hear again. Maybe I'll even buy the book. The movie? See it! Even if you are looking only for a movie to charm and touch you for a few minutes - see it!
14
Rent (2005,  PG-13)
Rent
"No day but today" and "You can't buy love; but you can rent it!" I was hesitant to watch this movie and it took me half way through be "get caught". It isn't perfect - what is? But it really has a lot of good stuff in it.
15
Shall We Dance (2004,  PG-13)
Shall We Dance
After "Chicago" I decided Richard Gere might be able to dance, so I checked this one out. VERY good movie for several good reason! I even got my own copy.
16
V for Vendetta (2006,  R)
V for Vendetta
"V" is about the struggle of people against their government. Its parallels today are frightening, especially how any government can use "evil" or its possible threat to remove the rights of it's citizens. This is a story from an old comic book! But it could well be front page news.
V says, "People should not fear their governments, Governments should fear its people." Mark Twain once said the worst sin is the sin of silence; when people see evil and say nothing and do nothing. One more thing I liked - the hero is not perfect; not everything he does is right and good - a compelling mix of freedm fighter and a man trapped by his need for revenge.
17
A Walk in the Clouds (1995,  PG-13)
A Walk in the Clouds
Gentle, loving, interesting - a really good movie to see more than once - or twice.
18
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992,  G)
The Muppet Christmas Carol
One of the BEST - wonderful and familiar story and I LOVE this music. M Caine gets a wee bit sticky near the end, but recovers well. For me a holiday favorite !!
19
Moulin Rouge (1952,  Unrated)
Moulin Rouge
good acting; good music; good story; quite different from the Kidman McGregor verson, but still excellent. This version focuses on the artist Toulouse-Lautrec (played by Jose Ferrer who won the Acadamy award for this role).
20
The Dark Crystal (1982,  PG)
The Dark Crystal
totally excellent movie by J Henson. Good vs evil - much more than that.
21
The Princess Bride (1987,  PG)
The Princess Bride
This is just FUN to watch - everytime. "As you wish."
22
Auntie Mame (1958,  Unrated)
Auntie Mame
Corney, perhaps, but a classic. Mame is a genuine person and Roz is brilliant. "Life is a banquet, but most ... are starving to death." We can learn from her enthusiastic embrace of life.
23
The Secret of NIMH (1982,  G)
The Secret of NIMH
really excellent. Don Bluth may have trained and worked at Disney, but he had ideas of his own. This is as good as any Disney animation. Some great characters here.

28
Powder (1995,  PG-13)
Powder
Nothing is perfect, but this is good. Interesting ideas.
29
Regarding Henry (1991,  PG-13)
Regarding Henry
This is one I own. Sometimes it takes a "shot in the head" to wake us up. Good story and very good acting by Ford, Benning and the young girl who plays their daughter. (If you read the review that comes up when you highlight the movie poster, remember - it's only that guy's opinion, just as this is mine; and I think he's way off base.)
30
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947,  Unrated)
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
A really fine movie with an excellent cast. 1947 was not high on special effects; so this movie has a "story", and it tells it very well.
31
Mark Twain Tonight (1967,  Unrated)
Mark Twain Tonight
Hal Holbrook was a young man when he did this; he memorized 14 hours of Twain's material; sadly it is not all on this DVD; But it is excellent; you might shed a tear; youl will definietly laugh.
32
Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris) (1992,  Unrated)

Brother Sun, Sister Moon
Fancifull telling of the story, but beautifully filmed; worth seeing.
