2004 R-rated (nonviolent) movie stars Omar Sharif(the "Arab" in this film-Arabe/Mahgreb) has taken up residence & is a merchant in France, a shopkeeper who eventually adopts a young Boy Moses (Pierre Boulanger) age 16. Charming, touching (though tragic) story. Beautiful essence!! [if your standards are extremely conservative, there are parts of this movie you might not appreciate] [adult themes]
(June 2005 director Pierre Salvadori) Just saw this- have read NO reviews on it! Apres Vous means "After You!" French movie w/ English subtitles! MUCH FUNNIER THAN PINK PANTHER FOR EXAMPLE!! (Garcon) Antoine stumbles upon a man as he is hanging himself (Louis) Attempts to free him from his demons....over a lost love! Great restaurant scenes! Surprising lots of laughs! Good acting!! IN SPOKEN FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES To tell you much more would be to give away the plot...much time is spent in this film in a florist shop!! LOL
1991 Fun story of British mobs & American mobsters!! Didn't know Brad Pitt has such a long arm span?!? Vinne Jones, Jason Statham, Benecio Del Toro....Need more reason to see this movie of boxers & jewel thieves??
David Guterson's bestselling novel came to the screen in 1999 through Austrailian Director Scott Hicks. Beautiful, artful and sensitive portrayal of love...and what time and war cannot do to stop true love...I would not call this a war movie (WW II in the U.S. American/Japanese during war & post-war era) Rather this touching Australian- madeto order love story is told in flash backs and involves all our senses. Pure, childhood love propels Ishmail Chambers (Ethan Hawke) son of a local independent newspaper/ publisher to unselfishly devotes his aide to the legal criminal defense of the Japanese husband of his Japanese childhood love, Hatsue Imada Miyamoto (Akira Takayama) This innocent defendant (SEE PHOTO BELOW) is beautifully defended by Max Von Sydow who plays an aging but valient defense attorney.
That might be where this story begins but it certainly captures more than sentimental appeal and a vivid courtroom drama. The heart of this story reveals a town very much prejudiced against the Japanese...during the beginning of World War II when yes some of the characters are rounded up and interred into prison camps here in the U.S.A.
Note: Some famous co-stars such as James Cromwell, Celia Weston, James Rebhorn (Prosecuting attorney).
(Oct 2005 Director: Gidi Dar) This Israeli film won Israeli awards plus International awards!! I loved this film about an Orthodox Jewish couple...the husband had been a former gang leader but turned straight...still having his past trail him. Funny, original, provocative....I loved the emphasis on prayer! Much chuckles! Great fun (along with the pseudo serious)
(Nov. 2004 Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet) Un Long Dimanchi de Fianceailles My take having just seen this film? Raw footage of war.FRENCH MOVIE with your choice of French, English or Spanish subtitles........Love story which manages to hold your interest throughout its many twists & turns.. About Matilda (Audrey Tatou), the fiance of a young carpenter (Gaspard Ulliel), Maneche, believed to be killed in WW I but Matilda is impossibly certain he could possibly be alive..and she travels first to a convent to read a letter from a fellow soldier(Esperanza) of Maneche from 1917 when he was in Somme. Before Maneche is sent as 1 of 5 into "No Man's Land". Matilda viists Detective Germain Pire (Ticky Hildalgo) in Paris seeking survivors of the famous trench/bunker Bingo Crepuscule. Cost? 20 francs per day (+expenses) On a more serious note, graphically depicts the harsh reality of "The Great War (WW I)". For example, mustard gas attacks; flooded trenches; Soldiers' diet (when lucky) Beetroot soup..lavendar honey, cocoa from Nigeria; the fact that the penalty for soldiers who wounded themselves was court-martial under penalty of death.. Jody Foster very convincingly plays the wife of one of Maneche's closest soldier buddies whom Matlide pays a visit!
"La Fille Seule" French film with English subtitles (Oct. 1996 Director: Benoit Jacquot) French movie...i just rented this move from Netflix....EVER HAD ONE OF THOSE DAYS??? Aye yai yai!! Poor, beautiful little Valerie (Virginie Ledoyen) in this story not only has a rugged first day at her new job in a quality hotel as a room service servant (in full tux!) But before staring her new job Valerie tells her boyfriend she is pregnant with his child, Right off the bat, there is trouble! Rude sexually harrassing co-worker first calls her a "little slut" as he comes on to her when she is a patron's room delivering breakfast...then just moments later imposes himself right behind her..and asks her, "Do you like it doggy style?" To which she responds by slapping his face (Go Valerie!!)
Touching tale of real woman issues....I enjoyed this film! it is so extreme you could almost see it as a farce..if the subject matter were not so serious!
Magnifique!
(2005 Director: Christophe Barratier) PERHAPS YOU MISSED THIS ONE! A PITY!!
NOT the typical "boys school" movie...Francois Berland adds a note of class to this tres Francais film...which makes one of life's most poignant statements on how we handle God's gift to us of our "wayward chlidren" Never can I say I enjoyed a film more! and in French with subtitles!! Look to this incredible looking Jean-Baptiste Maunier (with the voice of an angel) for a future promising career! Do YOU have a long lost dream? Never too late you know!? This is about making a difference, understated!!
(2006 Director: Christian Carlton ) Yes a war movie but told first hand...based on the book by R. de Roussy de Sales but about the first WW I (the "Great War") providng some inside looks at each side of the French & American soldiers fighting....focusing on a particular battlefield the night of Christmas Eve! Lovely Fraulein Diane Kruger (National Treasure & Troy -the lovely Helen..) plays a lovely German opera star whose partners on stage goes off to this war along with MILLIONS of other young strong men...MEMORABLE!! Does not disappoint! French language with English subtitles.
FRENCH COMEDY..HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO ME. MY recommendation of foreign films? Joyeaux Noel (also in French) FLIXSTER'S NOTE: Plot: Félix, disguised as Father Christmas, hands out leaflets advertising a sexy Christmas party. His place is taken by an African Santa Claus and he returns to his caravan only to find his girlfriend Jose...( read more )tte about to leave him. When he comes after her, she takes refuge at "SOS Distress", run by two neurotics, Thérèse and Pierre
(1958 Comedy French classic) Delightful. On DVD in spoken French with English subtitles...this is mostly a nonverbal artistic satire on The Joneses conforming to the "Modern Age" of technology...and societal attitudes! BRAVO!! I loved it! A quirky and pleasing French comedy by director Jacques Tati. 'Mon Oncle' displays, as an underlying theme, the contrast between the new and the old: the old buffoon trying to 'grow up' and get a respectable job in something that is strange and new to him; the 50-60s retro-futuristic houses from the suburbs, full of strange gadgetry and colourful furniture, compared to the poor and old-fashioned neighbourhoods. Even Jacques Tati's 'Monsieur Hulot' is practically a silent film character - much like Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton - in a sound film. As such, it is an unusual combination of subtle humour and slapstick. A great film .As such, it is an unusual combination of subtle humour and slapstick. A great film "poignant" and bfore it's time!!
(2002 Director: Patrice Leconte) Sounds like a disturbing portrait of 2 men brought together by fate...Synposis from http://www.ericdsnider.com/movies/the-man-on-the-train/ ". . .The film's fascinating idea is to have these men become real friends, and director Patrice Leconte ("The Widow of Saint-Pierre," "The Girl on the Bridge") explores the peculiarities of male friendship, with its detached emotion and unexpressed affection. They say little to each other of any real consequence, yet you get the feeling they'd die for each other.
Both men live with regret in their lives,..."
Excerpt of review from www.moviehabit.com: "A man steps off a train in a small French town where the one hotel has gone out of business. He is forced to take a private room. There are many connections between the two men. Both are alone, and both are lonely. Both brood about their dates with destiny on Saturday and worry about the things they can?t control. They come to see in each other the qualities that are missing from their own lives. Milan has had too much adventure and not enough stability, and it?s the opposite for Manesquier.
At one point, Manesquier says of his tame and boring life, ?I stopped living before I got old.? Those same words might well be the Milan?s epitaph if he doesn?t slow down. . . . At the end, the connections are drawn even more clearly in a Godfather-like montage. . . " http://www.moviehabit.com/reviews/man_e903.shtml
Wow!!! German language authentic portrayal of what people have to do to stay alive!! Sensitive, alluring, but still true to the miseries of World War II (WWII)!! THIS MOVIE IS 5 STARS & IN ALL OF MY TOP FAVORITE LISTS BECAUSE IT IS MY FAVORITE@@ He loves her; he loves her not; he ..HE LOVES her!!
(2005 Director: Vinko Bresan) My review? Hmmm...this film kind of repeats itself. Use of an "instant replay" but adding this to what had already been seen....finally actually put me to SLEEP!
Adapted from the novel ''Plaster Sheep," using elliptical story retellilng character by character we are shown over and over the order of events, but by a different character's recollection.......
Set in the NOT happy wartime Bosnia..A man dies. His WIDOW,Majka (played by Mirjana Karanovic) is joined by her son & his 2 fellow soldier buddies delivering the pre-buriel body to her home. Bad timing right thereafter for a neighbor to be murdered (albeit he was a Serbian smuggler & loan shark)? Or was it a suicide?
Of course, the mom and son are quite quite worried about an investigation searching for witnesses even BEFORE her husband's burial (His body had to be transported to their home by her own son + 2 fellow soldiers as was the custom up until the recent generation). What is the truth? What actually happened?
A likeable & realistic investigator named Barbir is portrayed by Drazen Kuhn). He has had a chance sexual intimacy with Novinarka (Alma Prica), whose occupation is newspaper reporter. Barbir is likeable and has a wife who has remained in a coma.
Majka explains her situation to Investigator Barbir, then the movie backs up. Now we are shown the version of events known by Barbir. Then there is a second "replay" and then a third, etc etc. Somewhat confusing albeit interesting.
Stars Leon Lucev, Alma Prica, Mirjana Karanovic, Drzen Kuhn & Kresimir Mikic.
Since there is nothing here yet on Flixster, let me please also share with you a German friend's review, "The "other" gets a good working over in WITNESSES, Vinko Bresan's Serbo-Croatian war movie/murder mystery/family drama that, by its finale, has become a moving and highly sophisticated 84 minutes of moviemaking. As you?re watching, you'll suddenly think, "Wait: I've heard that line of dialog already." And indeed you will have. Not to worry: The fractured time frame here turns a story (that I believe plays itself out in just a couple of days) into a complex mix of actions, motives and outcomes that will rivet you. There is an almost classic sense of tragedy at work here--beautifully abetted by story, cinematography, direction, writing and acting--that touches on many of the usual suspects: the pointlessness of a war that turns next door neighbors into enemies, overbearing mothers, sibling rivalry, infidelity and so much more. But Mr. Bresan's ability to weave this together in nearly seamless fashion lifts "Witnesses" into the realm of art. Here is another sterling example of top-notch international filmmaking from the Film Movement group..."

(1969 Director: Luis Buffuel) I rented this one from Netflix in search of some interesting French films, Clearly I had not understood the subject mtter of this film. It is at times somewhat surrealistic vision of the path of pilgriumage to the ancient St. James journey in C.* del Apostele in Spain's shrine. This is an age-old pilgrimage.
The 2 lead characters are street people, down on their luck men, one younger and one older, who for the most part walk along the road their path of pilgrimage and encounter along the way some moving and many times unexplainable events....
Without much use at all of special effects there are in this 1969 film very mystical spiritual "conversation" throughout with many metaphors and occurrences beyond explanation. This pilgrimage is one that has been traveled from France (Paris in the case of the 2 homeless men as lead characters in this film). The Virgin Mary appears at one time; however, often the apparitions are rathr dark, though usually well-intentioned toward this deparate duo.
I am a student of French & as such mesmerized by the vastly unique and ultra conservative views of the French. Perhaps that is one reason why the French language itself does not change, morph unlike practically EVERYTHING about our American English language.
The movie at the end credits the many Catholic cathedrals and dogma which are debated throughout this "journey."
