Life Is Beautiful (La Vita è bella) (1998,  PG-13)
Life Is Beautiful (La Vita è bella)
I've wanted to watch this movie for the longest time & I finally have - I must say it was amazing!!
Its a really touching, funny story with some beautiful performances. The kind of movie you're not likely to forget.
(Oh! & I keep saying "Buon giorno, Principessa! " - that line from this movie is stuck in my head lol).
2
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006,  R)
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
I think this movie definitely lives up to its hype - its both beautiful & horrifying.
Young Ofelia creates an imaginary world in order to escape the brutal, fascist surroundings in which she lives with her step-father.
A dark fairy tale with brilliant fantasy scenes mixed with the seriousness of the overall story. A must-see!

Cidade de Deus, (City of God) (2003,  R)
Cidade de Deus, (City of God)
Amazing gang film.. way better than some of the nonsense that comes out of America!!

Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in) (2008,  R)
Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in)
A sweet & beautiful coming-of-age love (of sorts) story with the contrast of a haunting vampire tale.
Let the Right One in I found to be quite an entrancing movie. A good story that doesn't need to rely on excessive gore but will still chill you to the bone in one scene and then hit you with the 'innocence' of the child characters in the next.
This is one of those movies that I saw end & thought 'I want to see more - what happens now?' - sequel please?
nb. This movie is being remade (an english version), I don't see the point but it might be interesting to see what they make of it.

Ma Vie En Rose (My Life in Pink) (1997,  R)
Ma Vie En Rose (My Life in Pink)
Interesting and sweet french movie - it tells the tale of an adorable little boy who thinks he is or should have been born a girl and shows how his family try to deal with the situation.
The imagery in this is beautiful and there are some touching scenes too. Brilliant!
6
Tsotsi (2006,  R)
Tsotsi
I thought this was truly poignant.
One of the best foreign movies I've seen, some scenes I thought were a little hard to watch - but you gain a feeling of aspiration/hopefulness as the story moves along.
7
Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) (2001,  R)
Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
Very good, worth watching.
If you like french films (I do) rent this.
8
High Tension (Switchblade Romance) (2004,  R)
High Tension (Switchblade Romance)
This is one of the best horror movies I've seen in a while. It has some truly intense scenes & a bit of gore for people who don't mind it!
The ending however is just bizarre and makes you question the entire story before it - but I found that a good thing lol.
9
The Story of the Weeping Camel (2004,  PG)
10
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt) (1999,  R)
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt)
Really inventive movie with its choice of endings. I wasn't too keen on the animated sequences but the story was quite captivating & the soundtrack keeps the adrenaline in the plot pumping too.
11
Ponette (1997,  Unrated)
Ponette
So glad I got round to watching this film.
A completely absorbing story about a child having difficulty coming to terms with her mother's death. Victoire Thivisol was amazing as the lead character Ponette - but in all honesty the whole cast (predominantly child actors) were brilliant to watch. It truly was like watching reality play out for most of the movie - thats how good they were.
Have the tissues ready - you'd have to be hard-hearted to not shed a tear at this!!
12
Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001,  R)
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Great coming-of-age movie!
13
El Orfanato (The Orphanage) (2007,  R)
El Orfanato (The Orphanage)
This movie retains the atmosphere of a classic ghost story - very creepy in parts and manages to build tension too.
I was drawn into the movie and found the realization of the story quite unexpectedly heartbreaking. Brilliantly done. (Purpously avoiding major spoilers here!!)
If you like horror movies more pyschological than mindless blood & gore - this is for you.
14
I'm Not Scared (,  R)
15
8 Women (,  R)
16
Dead Snow (Død snø) (2009,  Unrated)
Dead Snow (Død snø)
A Norwegian horror that contains an equal dose of fear & humour. I liked the Nazi zombie theme and the nice snowy backdrop which enables a good contrast for the gore that ensues.
I find that European films seem to do adrenaline pumping scenes better than most! This is a lively addition to the horror genre.
17
Nathalie (2003,  Unrated)
18
Aurore (2005,  Unrated)

Kung Fu Hustle (2005,  R)
Kung Fu Hustle
I rarely watch kung-fu movies.. but this one was funny! good effects too.
20
To Be and to Have (Etre et Avoir) (2003,  Unrated)
To Be and to Have (Etre et Avoir)
Such a sweet yet simplistic docu-movie.
21
Hable con Ella (Talk to Her) (2002,  R)
Hable con Ella (Talk to Her)
This is one of those movies you have to finish watching if you've started!... at times its a little bizarre and disturbing but very engrossing.
22
Martyrs (2008,  R)
Martyrs
This is definitely not for the faint-hearted!
A french horror movie which had my adrenaline pumping in the first hour or so, some of the shots were quite gory and violent too. The second half of the movie is very hard to watch - as the story twists and becomes quite sadistic.
I thought the second half dragged out and what was already disturbing viewing became relentless, especially as the movie draws to its conclusion!
Morjana Alaoui was impressive as the character 'Anna', but this is surely one for horror fans only.
(Haha - my review doesn't give you a single clue about what this movie is about)
23
Sin noticias de Dios (Don't Tempt Me) (2003,  R)
24
Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru) (2001,  Unrated)
25
C.R.A.Z.Y. (Crazy) (2005,  Unrated)
C.R.A.Z.Y. (Crazy)
A really good movie which holds your attention throughout & has a great soundtrack to boot.
26
Bad Education (La Mala educación) (2004,  NC-17)
Bad Education (La Mala educación)
I missed the beginning of this movie but the story was so interesting that I quickly managed to get into it.
It has some beautiful scenes & is a really good film.
27
Amores Perros (2001,  R)
Amores Perros
An interesting trio of stories that link through a car crash, each sharing themes of love and pet dogs! I found some of the scenes (dog fighting) a little difficult to watch but overall the film was entirely watchable. The filming was realistic and the actors were brilliant. My only real negative was the bumnumbing length of the movie!
28
Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower) (2006,  R)
Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower)
Quite stunning visually - lots of photographic detail to take in and the film moves along at a nice pace.
This isn't a martial arts movie as such either - so you are able to take in the story rather than being overpowered with action scenes.
29
Glue (2006,  Unrated)
Glue
A coming-of-age story about the usual teen angst but set in the backdrop of what appears to be a lazy summer - for that reason I liked this. The filming style gave it a very laid back feeling and despite the subject of teen drama this wasn't in-your-face. Quite good.
30
Secret Things (,  Unrated)
31
Shaolin Soccer (2002,  PG-13)
Shaolin Soccer
Not nearly as good as Kung-Fu Hustle ~ the film is quite silly but funny in moments.
I watched the dubbed version & I think that added to the humour, sometimes subtitles can distract you from the film & thats not what you want in a comedy.
Not Bad.
32
Monsoon Wedding (2002,  R)
Monsoon Wedding
A hugely enjoyable movie which centers around the preperations for an arranged marriage in India. The story consists of vibrant characters and different romances plus family drama... and a bit of music and dancing for good measure. A great little look into a part of Indian culture with a good ending too.
Well worth the watch.
33
Weekend cu mama (Weekend with my Mother) (2009,  Unrated)
Weekend cu mama (Weekend with my Mother)
A family drama about a woman who tries to reconnect with the 19 yr old daughter she left to be raised by relatives 16 yrs previous.
Starts off fairly bland (.. but with a good soundtrack) - the film has moments of hopefulness but turns quite unexpectedly sinister before somewhat abruptly ending!
I would have liked to have seen a little more put into the ending as the story leaves you questioning. Otherwise, not a bad film.
34
[Rec] (2007,  R)
[Rec]
This movie has quite a believable setup - the characters and plot start you off on a good ride but it takes an hour or so to get into 'scary' mode. I don't enjoy hand-held camera style filming but this was more bearable to watch than Cloverfield.
Its always a downside when these movies are really getting good but then suddenly end!! (Also a little p*ssed that the ending was actually shown as a clip in the trailer - so I knew what was coming).
Worth a watch for horror fans - but doesn't, in my opinion, live up to the hype.
35
Little Red Flowers (Kan shang qu hen mei) (2006,  Unrated)
36
Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother) (1999,  R)
Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother)
An interesting mixed-bag of characters and a story where nothing can really be expected. A single mother finds herself on a personal journey to meet up with her past after the tragic loss of her only child - only along the way her life becomes entangled with a few new faces she meets.
As sad as some of the movie is, there is also a lot of humour too.
Quite good.
37
JCVD (Van Dammage) (2008,  R)
JCVD (Van Dammage)
This was one of those movies where the reality lines are blurred - obviously the main story is fiction but in parts JCVD himself portrays somebody partly fragile and quite honest about his own personal mistakes (or is that just him being a great actor??). Basically JVCD the character reflects the life of Jean-Claude the actor, with an armed robbery plot thrown in! Slightly slow in parts (didn't realise this was sub-titled either) but very watchable!!
38
Innocence (2004,  R)
39
Nikita (La Femme Nikita) (1990,  R)
40
Swimming Pool (2003,  R)

La Cité des Enfants Perdus (The City of Lost Children) (1995,  R)
La Cité des Enfants Perdus (The City of Lost Children)
I watched the dubbed version & it wasn't too bad (voices matched the characters quite well). Some good visuals & the story had potential.. however, it was all just too bizarre for me!
