Cinema Paradiso (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso) (1988,  R)
Cinema Paradiso (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso)
This film made me cry - especially during the climax of the film when Toto was viewing the montage Alfredo made for him. I love the film to the core. I first saw the theatrical version at the cinema back in 89 or 90 (I can't remember exactly when) and truly loved it - but having seen the new extended version on DVD - this new version focuses on Toto's relationship with his long lost love ... questions are answered in the new version. Personally however, I prefer the theatrical one because some questions are just best left unanswered.

I love this film. It's funny, heart-breaking and simply chic. You cannot help but feel for the main character, Malena throughout the film.

Salaam Bombay! (1988,  Unrated)
Salaam Bombay!
A beautiful film - meaningful for its socio-entrepreneur aspects that these homeless kids were saved from the streets (in real life) - thanks to Mira Nair and friends. On DVD, I recommend the director's commentary for 2nd viewing. Mira Nair is a brilliant director.

La Ciociara (Two Women) (The Woman from Ciociara)
Amazing film by Vittorio de Sica! One of the finest performances on the silver screen on the part of the well-deserved Oscar winner (Best Actress for this film), Sophia Loren. I saw the Italian film without the subtitles, and could still follow the incredibly well-written screenplay. The rape-in-church scene was heart-breaking and took the turn for the mother-daughter relationship.

The Italian (Italianetz)
Touching story. It provides you a glimpse of child-trading in less-developed or developing countries, in this case in Russia. Your heart would just fall for the little boy, Vanya in the film. His mature outlook on life and his zeal to pursue his longing to reunite with his mother, will warm your heart. I would highly recommend anyone this Russian film. The film has English subtitles.

Sophie Scholl: The Final Days
Hans and Sophie Scholl are regarded as war hero and heroine. Their story is gripping and it demands our compassion and respect for their courageous and selfless act in giving their lives for the sake of Freedom of others. Great performance by Julia Jentsch. After watching the film, be sure to watch the interview with Scholls' sister, and the actual footages of the court scenes in the extras. The film is in German with English subtitles.

Letters from Iwo Jima (2007,  R)
Letters from Iwo Jima
I salute Clint Eastwood as a director. I think you really ought to see this film whether you have or have not watched 'Flags of Our Fathers' which Eastwood also had directed. 'Letters from Iwo Jima' is a touching story of a group of Japanese soildiers who are trying to protect their own Japanese soil that is Iwo Jima island during WWII. The film is in Japanese language (with English subtitiles) and is a narrative from the Japanese point of view. However when it comes to the humane aspect of the war, whether in winning, losing or even surrender, the good and bad of both sides of the fence are evident in this film. To me, the lesson to be learnt here, is when one is fighting for his country, he is of course instinctively bound to stick to his love for his own country. But what is important is, each side, whether (in this case) the Americans or the Japanese, has a COMMON story to tell - that is, the constant longing to eventually to be able to come home and be with his family, despite knowing he must fight until the end and may die in the process.

In this film, ironically, the letter written by an American soildier's mother to her son, Sam, whom the Japanese soldiers captured and humanely treated; is what that inspired the last remaining Japanese soldiers fighting in Iwo Jima not to give up, advance and fight, because it was "the right thing" to do. Even as the sole survivor, Saigo (played by Kazunari Ninomiya), technically does not surrender but tries to fight even unarmed. But he managed to fall into place to 'do the right thing" because perhaps his destiny is to return to his wife and new-born daughter.

White Lady
Yawn! Too much rambling. Predictable plot that revolves (or fusses rather) around campus. What was too unrealistic was the apparition or otherwise known as 'White Lady' whose facial ghostly effects were apparent amateurish special effects that were too-obviously, computer-simulated graphics.
