Brick (2006, R)
Great detective story/film noir about a high school student trying to find out who murdered his girlfriend and getting involved with some dangerous and interesting people along the way. This film gets it's compelling, riveting feel due to way the story's told and the interesting character's and shots;like an old noir classic but told in an American high school. The fast-paced dialogue could throw you off if your not paying attention, but saying that, its a clever, well thought out and written tale that keeps you thinking all the way through. |

The Last Horror Movie (2004, R)
I have no idea if many people have seen this film but i think its really good. The style in which it has been made, the performance of the actor playing the main character and the fact he gets you to understand the reason why he kills people and you do actually see why he does what he does is what makes this great! |

House of 1000 Corpses (2003, R)
This film really brought old-school style horror back to a mainstream audience.Mainly due to the director being Rob Zombie! This B-movie-ish horror about a psychopathic family butchering a bunch of annoying college students is gory, shocking and suprisingly funny at times. Its also very dark at times in contrast to the sometimes cartoonish style of the set and characters. The ending is completely mental with the last five minutes being a bit of a headfuck but that isn't a bad thing and adds to the overall unhinged feel of the film. |

I expected this to be funny but it turned out to be even better than i thought it would be!Some great one-liners and a good story that doesn't get all preachy about what can happen if you have un-protected sex but at the same time doesn't get irresponsible and stuff due to the main character accepting his role as a soon-to-be-dad.Overall,a fun,at times hilarious american comedy. |

Equilibrium (2002, R)
This is a great film! Its an interesting, slightly depressing look at what the future could be like for mankind if world war 3 took place and feelings and emotions were made "illegal".Christian Bale gives a great performance,as usual,as an one of the agents in charge of mentoring peoples feelings and arresting them and in most cases, executing them,if they dare to feel proper emotion! But later, after Bales character,Preston, misses his regular dose of the drug that controls emotions,he actually starts to have real feelings and realises how wrong the world around him has become.Although this might sound bleak,Equilibrium has plenty of action with Bale notching up the record for most on-screen kills apparentley! Some good shoot outs and fight scenes mixed in with Bales realization of what he,and the world, has bcome make this one of the best thrillers i've seen for ages! |

Jarhead (2005, R)
Great story about a group of soldiers on standby in Iraq.Jake Gyllenhaal gives a briliant performance as the soldier missing home and his girlfriend along with the rest of the platoon.Although this film doesn't have alot of action like, say,Saving Private Ryan,it makes up for it with a compelling,at times moving story with good performances. You get to see the other side of being involved in a war here,a side you never here about;the waiting, the paranoia and the lonliness. You occasionally see the times where the soldiers let loose and try and have a good time but overall this is a powerful, well directed, well acted war film. |

28 Weeks Later... (2007, R)
A great sequel to what was a great first film.Plenty of scares, plenty of action,Robert Carlyle is as good as ever and the direction is brilliant. After the breakout of the infection only so many people are cleared and allowed back into the country.Including Carlyles son and daughter, who also put in great performances, who lost their mum after a zombie attack.Or so they think at first. You really feel for the family throughout the film and the ending leaves you guessing as to whether they'll be another one which would be great if it turns out to be anything like this.Oh,and theres also a great death by hellicopter blades bit! |

Cloverfield (2008, PG-13)
I have wanted to see this ever since i saw the first trailer a few weeks ago and i wasn't disappointed. It's a simple idea of something attacking New York but its made brilliant by the hand held style direction of the film which puts you right in the middle of the action.I wasn't sure how much of the monster they would show and i don't think they overdid it.There are some genuinely scary moments throughout, the character responsible for holding the camera has some good lines and you get to know the main characters before the event which means you feel for them during the main part of the film and that is also what makes the ending so good. And it helps that the female leads are all great looking!Anyway, this is a tense action/horror monster movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat right until the very end. |

Eastern Promises (2007, R)
A brilliant drama/thriller about the Russian Mafia in London. Brilliant performances from Viggo Mortesen,Naomi Watts and Vincent Cassell as well as the rest of the cast along with a great twist towards the end make this a worthwhile watch.Add in a few moments of shocking violence and you've got an essential film! This is like a companion piece to Cronenbergs last film,A History of Violence,as the endings are kinda similar and possibly deliver the same sort of message.A great piece of film making from Croners! |
|

Requiem for a Dream (2000, R)
A brilliant drama about four people trying to change their lives for the better but ultimately changing their lives for the worse. It's hard to describe this film as it has some very surreal and hallucinatary moments. But its brilliantly shot and directed, the music's great and the actings great to,particularly by Ellen Burstyn.A brilliant,fast-paced,hard-hitting drama. |

Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru) (2001, Unrated)
Brilliant Japanese film that shows relevance to modern day attitudes to education as well as plenty of violence! When schools are taken over by their students, who decide when they are going to come to class, when their holidays are etc. there's nothing the teachers or school's can do,so the goverment come up with an idea:Every year a group a students will be taken to a deserted island, get given weapons, some food and drink, and battle until there is only one survivor left and that person is the winner of Battle Royale. Some great scenes where we see certain students sticking together, others getting revenge on others and a few people who are just mental! This is such an entertaining film to watch but is fairly satirical at the same time and could quite possibly be a good idea/way to rid the world of chavs. |

Babel (2006, R)
Another great film by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, his third in a trilogy about fate and destiny linking people from different backgrounds and cultures. This time with events taking place in three different countries,Morroco,Mexico and Japan.Outstanding performances by Brad Pitt,Cate Blanchett,Rinko Kikuchi and Gael Garcia Bernal as the main characters involved, with an accident with a rifle being the catalyst for the drama, tragedy and heartache that follow.A brilliant, powerful and moving film. |

Ginger Snaps (2001, R)
Brilliant werewolf horror. Two teenage sisters,Ginger and Brigitte, have made a pact to stay together forever, even die together. But when Ginger is attacked by a dog-like creature near the woods at night, she starts to change and become much more aggressive and less of an outcast than she was before. It's not long before the sisters realise that Ginger is changing into a werewolf and that Brigitte can either find a cure or join her and become a werewolf herself in order to keep their pact alive. This has some scary moments, gore and good performances from Emily Perkins and Katherine Isabelle as the sisters, along with some decent dialogue.A great modern horror. |

Gone Baby Gone (2007, R)
Brilliant thriller staring Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan as two private detectives who get involved with trying to solve the case of a missing girl which soon has effects on their relationship as both partners and a couple. The film manages to blend the mix of drama and emotion about the case and action scenes perfectly with some great twists along the way. Unfortunately, there is a resembalance to the Madaline McCann case which led to the films original release a year or so ago being postponed. But judged purely on it's own merits, this is a great crime thriller with great twists, great acting and with a great directing debut by Ben Affleck. |

The Host (Gwoemul) (2007, R)
Brilliant Korean monster movie. When a monster is spotted hanging off the bridge on the Hans River then jumps off on to the local park for a feeding frenzy a young girl is picked up by it but taken to a big sewer instead of being eaten. The girl's family decide to go and look for her themselves, despite warnings from the police and military to keep away. This has drama and tension as well as laughs and is also satirical in some ways.A very entertaining film. |

Batman Begins (2005, PG-13)
I had to watch this again before The Dark Knight and i'm glad i did.A great performance by Christian Bale as we see the origins of Bruce Wayne and the man that would later become Batman. Liam Neeson is also great in this although i'm not sure about his place as this films main villain,it was good to see him training Bruce Wayne and helping him realise what could be his destiny. It was also good to see Cillian Murphy as the Scarecrow.Great film, great script and another great piece of directing by Christopher Nolan. |

My Little Eye (2002, R)
Low budget horror. Like some kind of fucked up version of Big Brother, five people enter a live webcast competition where they will stay in a secluded house whilst being filmed the whole time as it gets streamed across the internet.Or so they are told. The prize is one million dollars but if one person walks out they all lose. This has some great moments where the contestants begin to get more and more paranoid as we see that there's alot more going on in this show than meets the eye.The only down point for me would be the use of a soundtrack and the way it cuts off from the CCTV style camera's occasionally towards the end. This would have been much more effective if they stuck with the CCTV style all the way through with no soundtrack, unless the housemates were actually playing music from stereo's or something,as this would have been more realistic.Other than that,a decent, pretty scary, well made B-movie. |

Grosse Pointe Blank (1997, R)
Brilliant black comedy/thriller with John Cussack as a hitman who travels back to his hometown for a school reunion and meets up with his ex-girlfriend who he try's to get back together with whilst trying to escape a couple of FBI agents who are trying to catch him in the act of a hit so they can arrest him. This has some very funny moments as well as some great shoot outs.Great performances, great script, great film. |

El Orfanato (The Orphanage) (2007, R)
Christ on a bike, this films brilliant!A scary, dramatic, atmospheric and engrossing ghost story. When a family move into what used to be an orphanage, the young son starts behaving oddly, claiming he's got six new friends. At first his parents think its just imaginary friends like most kids have growing up but when strange noises are heard in the night and the son claims that his friends just want to play and are moving stuff around the house, the mother,Laura, starts to suspect there is alot more going on than imaginary friends. Well acted, written and directed. Great film. |

American Beauty (1999, R)
Brilliant comedy drama about a mans mid-life crisis, living in a suburban town and the things, consequences and people surrounding the man.Lester has a normal job, wife and daughter but seems a bit disillusioned by it all and when he meets his daughter's friend, Angela, it starts a chain of events that lead to a bad end for Lester. With his wife's career driven ways and his teenage daughter's often rebellious behavior seemingly going unoticed as he attempts to impress Angela and relive his youth by quitting his office job and buying a sports car, amongst other things. This is full of great performances including those by Kevin Spacey as Lester, Annette Benning, Thora Birch and Mena Suvari and is just a very good film. |

Tropic Thunder (2008, R)
This film is fucking hilarious!A group of well known actors are struggling to make a war movie so get sent into the jungle unaware that they are about to get involved in a situation that forces them to become real soldiers and fight for their survival. All of the performances are brilliant and its cleverly made and scripted. When i saw the trailers for this film i thought Robert Downey Jnr. would steal the show as a blacked-up soldier and he is very funny but its Tom Cruise as a big movie mogul that totally steals it.It's an unexpected but pleasnt suprise to see Cruise bald,in a fat suit and having fun swearing alot. But the whole thing is just fun from start to finish and one of the funniest films i've seen for ages. |

Suspiria (1977, R)
Very good old school horror from Dario Argento about a young ballet dancer who joins a famous dance academy. From the start things seem very strange at the academy with the brutal murder of another student the night the young girl joins and a friend confides that she believes withchcraft is happening somewhere within the building. This has a few very gory moments and some scary ones to and is always atmospheric thanks to Argento's directing along with the great lighting and the haunting sountrack by Goblin. It's easy to see why this is considered a classic amongst horror fans. |

Burn After Reading (2008, R)
The new Coen brothers movie is great because of the way they've made a smart and funny film out of something that is not a matter of great importance!John Malkovich plays a CIA agent who gets fired from his job and decides to write his memoirs, nothing majorly important, just an account of his life and time at the CIA, but when the disc containing them gets into the hands of a couple of fitness instructers who believe whats on the disc is top secret CIA "shit", the whole thing turns into big conspiracy type situation with Malkovich's wife and the man she's having an affair with getting involved along the way.Great performances from the whole cast,a clever script,as expected, and just pretty fun stuff all round. |

This Is England (2007, Unrated)
Powerful drama set in the 80's. Young Shaun is lonely and missing his dad who got killed in the Falklands war.One day he meets a group of local skinheads who he becomes friends with. However, when one of the gang is released from prison and joins them things become less light hearted and more serious and the more "patriotic" side of the gang comes to light. This has to be one of the best British films ever.A great, true to the life and times story with great acting and a good soundtrack. |

Little Children (2006, R)
Drama about two married people, unsure of whether they're happy in their marraiges/lives, embarking on a passionate affair. The action centre's aroung a small town community of local wives, cops and the local pervert and how things are effected by the affair. This film is full of great performances, especially by Kate Winslet and Jackie Earle Haley and has an interesting story with the odd moment of humour.A very compelling piece of film making. |

Juno (2007, PG-13)
I watched this film for the second time recently and enjoyed it even more than the first time. When i first saw it i was pleasantly suprised, this time i sat down knowing i was about to watch a decent film and loved it all the more for it. The scipt is smart, witty and well written by first time writer Diablo Cody. The storyline, although quite serious in certain aspects, never gets to preachy, the focus being the main character Juno's personality and how she deals with the situation and with the people around her and it's Ellen Page's performance as Juno that makes this film. She is an unapolagetic, independant, cheeky 16 year old who unexpectadly gets pregnant but shows her inner maturity and selflessness by realising she's far to yong and imature to cope with a baby and finds two willing future parents to adopt the child as soon as it's born. Full of great performances from the rest of the cast as well as Ellen Page. A good,indie-style comedy with the odd moment of drama, Juno is a great film. |

13 Tzameti (2005, Unrated)
I finally watched this French thriller after wanting to check it out for ages and it was worth the wait. A young man is repairing a roof on a house and when the man that lives there randomly dies, the young man finds, and follows,a set of instructions that were meant for the owner. This leads him to some sort of cabin in the middle of nowhere where a deadly game is played and people's lives are bet on.This is a compelling, pulsating thriller and the fact it's shot in black and white gives it a timeless feel. And despite the ending seeming random,it's also pretty inevitable. This is destined to be a cult classic. |

Evil Aliens (2005, Unrated)
This horror from Jake West came at a time when zombies came back big time with the likes of the Dawn of the Dead remake, Land of the Dead and Shaun of the Dead, so his idea to change from zombies to aliens as the bad guys for this film was a stroke of genius! |

Australia (2008, PG-13)
An epic love story/adventure set, obviously, in Australia just after the bombing of Pearl Harbour, before the Japanese invasion. Sarah Ashley originally fly's from England to Oz to see her husband as she beleives the reason he spends so much time there is because of other women. She soon meets a man named The Drover, who is meant to escort her to her husbands cattle farm, where they are selling the cattle. After making a brutal discovery and realising life isn't that easy and shes going to have to work hard to control the cattle and those aroung her, including a young aboriginal boy who Sarah is almost forced to mother, she throws herself into the work, taking tips from an often bemused Drover. This plays like one of those classic love stories like Gone with the Wind and at times the grand scale of the film along with the narration from the aborigibnal boy gives it an almost Disney feel. Australia may not be to everyones taste, not mine normally to be honest, but it's an epic, at times fun, at times drmatic story with decent performances and is definately worth a watch. |

The Wrestler (2008, R)
When i first heard that Darren Aronofsky's new film was about wrestling,i wasn't sure what to think.I mean,i liked WWF when i was 12 but for the maker of The Fountain and Requiem for a Dream to be doing a wrestling movie confused me slightly, until i'd heard what it was actually about and saw the trailer which made me desperate to see it and i wasn't disappointed at all. I know everyone's saying it but Mikey Rourke's performance as the fallen from grace wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson is brilliant. A restrained performance thats emotional and powerful, you have to wonder whether he was chanelling his own past when working on Randy, such is the intensity of his portrayl. As well as the wrestling scenes which are very real and brutal, anti-hollywood i guess you could say, we see his relationship with a local stripper and also his attempts at repairing his broken relationship with his teenage daughter, both roles played brilliantly by Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood respectively. Some might argue that we don't see the exact reason for his breakdown with his daughter but that would then take the attention away from Randy, which is who/what this films all about. A powerful film, great lead and supporting performances and a cool 80's metal soundtrack, all directed very well by Aronofsky. Great film. |

The Tracey Fragments (2007, R)
Probably one of the most interesting films i've seen. Ellen Page plays 15 year old Tracey Berkowitz, who loses her younger brother and attempts to find him. In between we see elements of Tracey's personality that show anger, aggression, confusion and even love. What makes this film different is that its made entirely in split screen, meaning that there are at least 3 different pictures/moments/scenes on screen at any one time throughout the movie. Although this might seem weird, the director, Bruce McDonald, has somehow managed to make the film compelling and powerful and not just some mess of a movie. This is thanks in part to Ellen Page, who puts in another great performance, showing many emotions throughout and giving this messed up character some depth which can't have been easy. The split screen thing won't be for everyone,i can see how it might annoy some, but overall The Tracey Fragments is a striking, original and well made film. |

Shutter (They Are Around Us) (2004, R)
Shit a brick, this is definately one of the best Asian horrors i've seen! When a young couple run over what looks like a young girl late one night, they regret not stopping. The man, a photographer, starts noticing strange shadows and faces in his photo's and the man and his girlfriend start having strange dreams and nightmare's. As the film goes on, things get creepier and more disturbing as we find out why that particular girl was run over by that particular couple. Great twists towards the end to. Creepy, scary, disturbing with a strong plot, decent acting and good directing and cinematography. A great modern horror. |

The Reader (2008, R)
A brilliant and captivating drama about how a young boys life is changed when he embarks on a passionate affair with an older woman. Michael Berg falls for older woman Hannah Schmitz when she takes him in after he falls ill on the street. Being young and Naive, Michael just takes the relationship as a bit of good fortune, thinking nothing of it when Hannah makes him read to her before they have sex or never asks how he is or how his day his been, her behaviour would appear quite cold to anyone else but a young person in love. A few years later and Michael is a law student, the affair long over, but he gets the shock of his life when one day, during looking in on a court case for the trials of the women involved in the SS during World War 2, he sees Hannah on trial as a war criminal, looking at life in jail. A brilliant performance from Kate Winslet and a well deserved Oscar win. David Kross is also great as the young Michael Berg, as well as Ralph Fiennes as the older Michael, showing how their brief but passionate affair had/has changed his life. |

Gran Torino (2009, R)
Clint is brilliant in this thriller about a tough ex-military man, Walt, who attempts to fit in with his new Hmong neighbours, in particular the young boy, who tries to steal Walts prized possession, the Gran Torino car of the title. Walt pushes his initial bad, racial, feelings aside to help reform the boy and stop him joining the local Hmong gang. The straight to the point dialogue and Clint's tough, honest performance is unflinching and at times hilarious, its great the way he has made this bitter, war hardened old man somewhat likeable. This is a gritty, hard as nails, at times very funny film and highly recommended, Although maybe not for the politically correct! |

An original and daring comedy drama about a college student, Ben, who after getting dumped by his girlfriend, suffers insomnia. So, with his spare 8 hours gets a job working the night shift at the local supermarket. Its here Ben finds he can freeze time. This allows him to mess with his co-workers and draw pictures of the female customers, art being his first love, and get as close as he likes! Its at this new job he meets new love interest, Sharon and things get even more interesting from there. A well made and acted film, which is both funny and at times touching. |

Martyrs (2008, R)
Brutal French horror. This starts as we see a young girl running from a building looking battered and bruised. Next, its years later and we see a normal looking family at breakfast. Suddenly there's a knock on the door, its a young woman with a shotgun and its then all hell breaks loose! This film keeps the tension high by throwing in a few suprises, just when you think you know where its going something unexpected happens and thats what makes this one of the most compelling horrors i've seen for ages. The concept and idea behind it also is what makes this film great. A brilliant horror film. |

The Lookout (2007, R)
Brillaint thriller with Joseph Gordon Levitt as a young man with a rich family and promising future until his dreams are ruined in a car crash. Now a night janitor at a bank, his depressing life suddenly becomes more interesting when he meets someone who used to go to same school, with promises of money and a better way of life. This is a well written and well acted thriller with great performances from Levitt, Jeff Daniels as his best friend and Isla Fisher as the love interest. |

Frost/Nixon (2008, R)
Compelling political drama/thriller. After the Watergate scandal in 70's America, where President Nixon was involved in rigging the voting, a British TV host wanted the big interview; David Frost. Nixon's people accepted the offer, thinking Frost would be a push-over. How wrong they were! Michael Sheen and Frank Langella are brilliant as Frost and Nixon respectively and there's also good performances from Sam Rockwell and Kevin Bacon. You don't need to be into politics to enjoy this fast paced drama, you just need to enjoy good film in general! |

There Will Be Blood (2007, R)
Very well made and brilliantly acted drama based around a power-mad oil baron. When Danial Plainview gets rich from striking some big-time oil his hunger for success, along with him being selfish, manipulative and sometimes a bit scary, leads to some interesting happenings when he tries to take over one particular area and we see how far he will go for money and respect. Daniel Day-Lewis rightly won an Oscar for his role as Daniel Plainview, its a great performance and could be considered one of, if not his very best performance a few years on. Credit also to Paul Dano as a preacher opposed to what Plainview is doing, there disagreements often come across as a battle between good and evil. An epic, memorable drama. |

District 9 (2009, R)
Sci-fi action thriller. District 9 is an area where, some years ago, an alien space craft appeared above a city and just hovered above it. With aliens seemingly setting up home in the slums below, that area became known as District 9. However, when the goverment plan to evict the aliens to a new, regimented area and start serving eviction notices, things get out of control and the aliens start fighting back. The documentry at the start adds realism to the overall feel of the film and the performance of the actor who played the main character, an average guy and family man ending up in a shitty situation, is brilliant, adding some much needed emotional impact to it all. The near humanistic behaviour of the aliens to, along with the relentless bullying from goverment types and some of the humans who want them out, really makes this more than just your average CGI based, kill everything with lots of shootings and explosions, all style no substance thrillers we tend to see far to much of thes days, turning District 9 into the type of film that keeps you on the edge of your seat but can also make you think. A possible future science fiction classic. |

(500) Days of Summer (2009, PG-13)
Possibly the most pleasantly suprised i've been while watching a film! I'm not usually a big rom-com fan but thought this looked pretty cool so decided to check it out. A young man meets who he believes is the girl of his dreams, Summer. Although Summer says she doesn't want anything serious the man falls for her and later ends up heartbroken when the relationship ultimately ends(don't worry, giving nothing away there!). This is original and refreshing with a non-linear look at the 500 days of the relationship. Well written with some funny lines and great performances from Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. Cool soudtrack to. If you enjoyed Nick and Nora's Infinate Playlist or Juno and have also been in a similar situation to the main characters yourself then theres no reason why you shouldn't enjoy this, erm, enjoyable comedy. |

Slumdog Millionaire (2008, R)
Comedy drama about a boy, Jamal, on the indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. He gets to the final question just as the show ends, but before he can return he is taken hostage as its believed he has cheated his way to get so far. It's then we see, through a series of flashbacks of Jamal growing up in the slums of India, how and why he gained the knowledge to successfully answer the questions on the show. |

Crank (2006, R)
Crazy action thriller with Jason Statham as the interestingly named Chev Chellios. A hitman who after failing to take care of a recent target has been poisoned by a gang boss and seemingly has only an hour to live. I'm not a huge fan of action films usually as its just the same old shit with different actors but this is so fast paced and entertaining, with witty dialogue, great stunts and action scenes that you can't help being dragged along for the ride. |

Looking for Eric (2009, Unrated)
Comedy drama about Eric, a postman whose life in going down the shithouse until he meets/imagines former Manchester United/France footballing legend Eric Cantona is giving him tips and help on how to sort his life out. This is Britains answer to all this bromance stuff thats going around at the moment. Funny, but also very real and gritty at times, this has good performances, an engaging story and is just a great film about trust and loyality. Shove that one in your ass Apatow! |

Jennifer's Body (2009, R)
Cool horror/black comedy about the seemingly unatainable high school girl being an evil man eating vampire! Despite the title, this focuses on Jennifer's high school friend and her discovery of Jennifer's vampire antics. Although not a life changing event(how many films are?) this is a witty, often funny, occasionally gory and pretty sexy black comedy. Megan Fox does a good job as Jennifer. Not brilliant but better than expected, shes still one of the sexiest actresses around, no doubt about that. Amanda Seyfried is also great as her best friend. Fans of Ginger Snaps will like this as its a similar story. Cool soundtrack to. Overall, a good, well written and entertaining film. |
