Taken (2009, PG-13)
This film takes a short while to find it?s direction, but at the exact point it does, it transforms into different film completely. |
|
| 2 |
Ghajini (2008, Unrated)
Much more than just a Bollywood version of ?Memento?, it offers a much more in depth background story which builds nicely to a revenge plot. The occasionally songs throughout the film were entertaining and fit well as do the soundtrack songs. |
|
| 3 |
Funny Games (2008, R)
I had hoped to watch the original first, however, this was certainly a a much enjoyed re-make. |
|
| 4 |
The Number 23 (2007, R)
Despite it?s depressing tone throughout, The Number 23 develops into an impressive conspiracy, mystery, psychological Thriller. I tend to find Jim Carrey?s serious roles more entertaining and find the films he chooses and the roles he plays very intense and thought provoking. |
|
| 5 |
Shattered (Butterfly on a Wheel) (2007, R)
A film I underestimated greatly and one that develops into a clever little Thriller. Enjoyable performances all around. |
|
| 6 |
The Brave One (2007, R) |
|
| 7 |
Gone Baby Gone (2007, R)
Ben Affleck works with brother Casey Affleck in his Directional debut Gone Baby Gone. This interesting Thriller gives a different angle of investigation for this theme and defintely triggers thoughts of real life cases with similar media attention. |
|
| 8 |
Mr. Brooks (2007, R) |
|
| 9 |
Antikörper (Antibodies) (2007, Unrated)
Antibodies really exceded my expectations on many levels. Firstly as a fictional story of a serial killer, this has to be the best one since ?The Silence of the Lambs?. It was controversial, made you feel uncomfortable in parts, it was casted well, especially in the case of the serial killer. |
|
| 10 |
Outlaw (2007, R) |
|
| 11 |
Premonition (2007, PG-13) |
|
| 12 |
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007, R)
An extremely surprising find with possibly Ethan Hawke?s best performance to date, plus great performances from both Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Albert Finney. The flashbacks are a tad tiresome at times, but the editing of them are very clever in the storytelling. A unique angle for the ?robbery? theme films and one that just got better and better as it went on. |
|
| 13 |
El Orfanato (The Orphanage) (2007, R)
The Orphanage is a Thriller which gives some wonderfully tense moments and really made me jump on a couple of occasions. |
|
| 14 |
Perfect Stranger (2007, R) |
|
| 15 |
Dead Man's Shoes (2006, Unrated) |
|
| 16 |
The Dead Girl (2006, R)
Having not received many reviews or recommendations for this film, I thought it was sure to be a very average film and yet I was pleasantly surprised, it?s definitely my type of film. |
|
| 17 |
The Prestige (2006, PG-13)
Excellent! I'd been told by many people that I would like this and they were absolutely right. |
|
| 18 |
The Illusionist (2006, PG-13) |
|
| 19 |
Deja Vu (2006, PG-13) |
|
| 20 |
Ne le Dis à Personne (Tell No One) (2006, Unrated) |
|
| 21 |
Lucky Number Slevin (2006, R) |
|
| 22 |
The Departed (2006, R)
A complicated web of deceipt of corruption, violence crafted with twists and turns throughout. |
|
| 23 |
Stay (2005, R) |
|
| 24 |
Freedomland (2006, R)
Most definitely my favourite performance by Julieanne Moore. There is more than one storyline here. Great performances also from Samuel L.Jackson and a smaller part from Edie Falco. |
|
| 25 |
Oldboy (2005, R) |
|
| 26 |
13 Tzameti (2005, Unrated)
Although not graphically violent in terms of blood and gore, this film reminded me of a more serious version of 'Hostel' and perhaps a little of Johnny Depps 'The |
|
| 27 |
Mindhunters (2005, R)
Although this is a little corny in parts, it's definitely my type of movie. Criminal profilers in a situation of survival. |
|
| 28 |
Hide and Seek (2005, R) |
|
| 29 |
Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs) (2002, R) |
|
| 30 |
Suspect Zero (2004, R) |
|
| 31 |
Secuestro Express (2005, R) |
|
| 32 |
Criminal (2004, R) |
|
| 33 |
Taking Lives (2004, Unrated) |
|
| 34 |
The Machinist (2004, R)
Fascinatingly weird and utterly brilliant, a story which unravels slowly and reveals an outstanding ending. |
|
| 35 |
Gothika (2003, R)
A film that isn?t highly rated by most, but remains to be one of my favourites and most re-watched films that I own. |
|
| 36 |
Identity (2003, R) |
|
| 37 |
In the Cut (2003, R)
Really impressed with this one, hadn't heard of it before and not the type of film I would've expected Meg Ryan to have been in, but she did a very good job, as did Mark Ruffalo. The film itself is quite slow moving, but I think that was the beauty of it as it made it more realistic. Avery enjoyable serial killer movie |
|
| 38 |
The Recruit (2003, PG-13) |
|
| 39 |
The Life of David Gale (2003, R) |
|
| 40 |
I'm Not Scared (, R) |
|
| 41 |
Phone Booth (2003, R)
A film I have watched over and over, a genius notion for a low budget film to be filmed all in the same place, this can only work if the storyline is good enough to carry it through with a life changing phone call from a killer with menace in his voice, blackmail provides enough ammunition to control the circumstances of individuals predicament. |
|
| 42 |
21 Grams (2003, R) |
|
| 43 |
Mystic River (2003, R)
Directed by Clint Eastwood and boasting an all star cast of some of Hollywood?s most talented Actors. This is Hollywood minus the Hollywood glint, it?s down to earth, believable, with some impressive performances all around, in particular, Tim Robins, Sean Penn and Marcia Gay Harden. |
|
| 44 |
City by the Sea (2002, R) |
|
| 45 |
Ted Bundy (2002, R) |
|
| 46 |
Tattoo (2002, Unrated) |
|
| 47 |
Heaven (2002, R)
This Itlian speaking film (with a small amount of English speaking) is a little slow moving, but has a very interesting story. Cate Blanchett of course (as always) is brilliant, pairing with Giovanni Ribisi once again, who also gave a great performance. |
|
| 48 |
Murder by Numbers (2002, R)
I love this film and have watched it over and over, Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt play great roles as young school kids plotting a more than perfect murder. |
|
| 49 |
Red Dragon (2002, R)
I can?t count the number of times I?ve watched this particular instalment to the series, but it?s cast alone is very impressive. Unlike the film ?Hannibal? Red Dragon is the film out of the four that is most like the original film ?The Silence of the Lambs?. With a unique way of telling the story (in terms of going backwards in order of instalments) the story unfolds and gives insight into how Dr Lecter was captured in the first place. |
|
| 50 |
Irreversible (2002, Unrated)
Told in the tradition of that in "Memento" i.e the storyline is played backwards, the film opens with a very visually dark scene accompanied by a pretty bizarre sound (that's still running through my head!! ha ha), along with some very dizzy filming, the viewer isn't particularly aware of what is going on straight away, but within the first couple of scenes the storyline developes and of course you are intrigued to know, how it all began. |
|
| 51 |
Frailty (2002, R) |
|
| 52 |
Making a Killing (Murder by Design) (2002, R) |
|
| 53 |
Minority Report (2002, PG-13) |
|
| 54 |
Don't Say a Word (2001, R) |
|
| 55 |
The Devil's Backbone (Espinazo del diablo, El) (2001, R) |
|
| 56 |
From Hell (2001, R)
Jack the Ripper; one of the most infamous serial killers of all time is still very much an unsolved enigma to this day. ?From Hell? tells the story through partial fact and partial theory, which opens the suggestion to a high level conspiracy surrounding the murders, which at least leaves you pondering the possiblity. |
|
| 57 |
Hannibal (2001, R)
Hannibal is a film which benefits from multiple viewing. When I first watched this film at the cinema at the time of it?s release (having already watched ?The Silence of the Lambs?), I?d anticipated a much more tense thriller, instead it was one of the first films to really show something gory, particular the end scene (but perhaps not to today?s standard). |
|
| 58 |
Training Day (2001, R) |
|
| 59 |
Memento (2000, R) |
|
| 60 |
The Crimson Rivers (Les Rivières pourpres) (2001, R) |
|
| 61 |
The Gift (2000, R)
This film has always been a favourite of mine, it?s a great supernatural thriller. Cate Blanchett (as always) gives a very strong performance, a likeable performance too from Giovani Ribisi. |
|
| 62 |
Stir of Echoes (1999, R) |
|
| 63 |
Flawless (1999, R)
Another great film from Joel Schumacher, with a great performance from De Niro (as always) who very convincingly played a Stroke patient, but even more impressive was the performance given by Philip Seynour Hoffman, who delivered (in my opinion) his best performance to date. I love the way this unlikely friendship develops and is a very enjoyable film. |
|
| 64 |
The Green Mile (1999, R)
This is certainly my favourite Stephen King adaption to date. The story is so original and all characters are developed so well, whether you love them or hate them. |
|
| 65 |
The Sixth Sense (1999, PG-13)
One of the greatest twists ever! Just remembering back to when I watched this for the very first time ? the ending was brilliant and everything suddenly makes sense. Even as a re-watch, knowing what?s to come, the film was created in such a way that almost every angle was covered. If you look hard enough and analyse everything you will come up with some flaws, but it?s such an enjoyable and clever film, the flaws are just not important. |
|
| 66 |
Stigmata (1999, R) |
|
| 67 |
A Perfect Murder (1998, R)
The remake of Hitchcock?s ?Dial M for Murder? and a good job of it was made. Some slight variences from the original storyline, but all the important parts were included. |
|
| 68 |
Deceiver (Liar) (1998, R) |
|
| 69 |
Sling Blade (1997, R) |
|
| 70 |
Donnie Brasco (1997, R) |
|
| 71 |
Face (1997, R)
One of my favourite British films, so many well know faces in this film, both big stars like Ray Winston, Robert Carlisle and Phil Davis, along with lots of others that Brits will recognise. |
|
| 72 |
187 (1997, R) |
|
| 73 |
L' Appartement (The Apartment) (1996, R)
I was completely blown away by this storyline. The plot travels along steadily at first and is very 2-dimensional, but soon enough, come clever flashbacks, sub-plots and intertwining relationships, which all managed to link together and yet still keeps you surprised throughout. |
|
| 74 |
A Time to Kill (1996, R) |
|
| 75 |
Primal Fear (1996, R) |
|
| 76 |
Copycat (1995, R)
An original plot for a serial killer film and although it?s not exceptionally well acted, it is the plot in this one, that is the main focus of the film. The more you know of Serial Killers the more fascinating the storyline becomes, we see the investigation from a Detectives view, a victim?s view and an analytical view from a criminal profile. |
|
| 77 |
The Usual Suspects (1995, R) |
|
| 78 |
The Net (1995, PG-13) |
|
| 79 |
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys) (1995, R) |
|
| 80 |
Seven (Se7en) (1995, R)
The film with the best film ending ever! David Fincher?s ?Seven? is one of those films you can endlessly watch over and over and never become bored of, when I remember back to the first time of watching it, the storyline was impressive, there were many tense moments and of course it has become one of the best and most remembered Serial Killer movies ever made. Kudos to Kevin Spacey for his short, but great role as John Doe. |
|
| 81 |
Léon (The Professional) (1994, R) |
|
| 82 |
Killing Zoe (1994, R)
Directed by Roger Avery, Produced by Quentin Tarantino, amidst the height of the 90?s Cult drug fuelled storylines, topped with violent criminals and a chaotic bank robbery. |
|
| 83 |
Kalifornia (1993, R) |
|
| 84 |
The Fugitive (1993, PG-13) |
|
| 85 |
Single White Female (1992, R) |
|
| 86 |
The Silence of the Lambs (1991, R)
Certainly my favourite Jodie Foster/Anthony Hopkins role, this is my genre, what could be a better story than to have a Serial Killer, profile another Serial Killer? This is a film that sets a benchmark for all other Serial Killer movies. |
|
| 87 |
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991, R)
TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY |
|
| 88 |
Cape Fear (1991, R)
This 1991 version of Cape Fear, has to be one of the best remakes ever, especially as the original was so good. Not Scorseses usual style of film, but DeNiro is outstanding as lead character Max Cady, a role in which DeNiro researched and built up the part to play including going to prisons to pick out tattoos. Great performances also to Juliette Lewis and Jessica Lange. |
|
| 89 |
Revenge (1990, R) |
|
| 90 |
Ghost (1990, R)
It's quite unbelievable to think that this film is 18 years old. It made such an impact during it's arrival in 1990 that there can't be many people left who haven't seen this classic. |
|
| 91 |
The Terminator (1984, R) |
|
| 92 |
Cruising (1980, R)
Highly controversial in it?s time, both in subject matter and portraying the Gay scene and Leather scene in a bad light. It?s very much a film way ahead of it?s time. |
|
| 93 |
Taxi Driver (1976, R)
A film of absolute brillience, I last watched this iflm in my teens when I just didn't get the greatness of it. |
|
| 94 |
Jaws (1975, PG) |
|
| 95 |
Frenzy (1972, R)
Hitchcock was definitely a Director ahead of his time, just imagine the kind of films he would be directing now if he could. |
|
| 96 |
North by Northwest (1959, Unrated)
One of the longer Hitchcock films, Gary Grant is a comical character who finds himself being set up by agents for a number of crimes. This is an action packed film where Grant's character has to work hard to survive. |
|
| 97 |
Dial M for Murder (1954, PG)
Impressive! I enjoyed the reamking of this in 'The Perfect Murder' with Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow, so was intigued to watch the original. |
|
| 98 |
Strangers on a Train (1951, PG) |
|
| 99 |
White Heat (1949, Unrated)
Worthy of all it?s praise, Cagney just has great presence on screen and of course the lovable rogue image suits him well. |
|
| 100 |
Rope (1948, PG)
Another great Hitchcock film! Shot mainly in one location, with what appeared to be seemless filming, the characters are well developed and the plot provides great suspense. The storyline also demonstrates a thin line between theory and practice. |
|
| 101 |
Shadow of a Doubt (1943, PG)
A much underestimated and underrated Hitchcock Thriller, In fact this was Hitchcock?s favourite. Of course this appeals to my interest of Serial Killer films and it?s great to see an enjoyable early one. |
|
| 102 |
Angels with Dirty Faces (1938, Unrated)
Jimmy Cagney suited these roles so well and impressively they managed to pick a young ?Rocky? to look and sound just like him. A story with moralistic value of two young boys, whose lives are split in a moments notice, ultimately deciding each of their fates. |
|
| 103 |
What Lies Beneath (2000, PG-13)
The thing that makes this film work so well, is the cleverly placed, typical Horror type scenarios, that never seem to materialise, yet keep you waiting for them to happen, check through the film, they are all there. Hence this becomes an edge of your seat Thriller, with heightened intensity that keeps your mind challenged. |
