1
Taken (2009,  PG-13)
Taken
This film takes a short while to find it?s direction, but at the exact point it does, it transforms into different film completely.

I would never have believed that Liam Neeson would be capable of pulling off this role, so I was not only impressed that he managed it, but even more impressed that he did it so well.. This was a super slick Action film with Assassin like qualities. Neeson?s relentless mission to protect his daughter with a take no prisoners is a fast tempo ? blink and you miss it ? Action packed film.
2
Ghajini (2008,  Unrated)
Ghajini
Much more than just a Bollywood version of ?Memento?, it offers a much more in depth background story which builds nicely to a revenge plot. The occasionally songs throughout the film were entertaining and fit well as do the soundtrack songs.

The flashing back and forth in time provided a good order in which to tell the story and is much different to ?Memento? in that respect also.

Aamir Khan played a an impressive lead role here, with a quite a transformation in character, who with a very athletic physique, provides some enjoyable fight scenes and moves.

Lengthly, but a very enjoyable watch and has instantly become part of my favourite films list.
3
Funny Games (2008,  R)
Funny Games
I had hoped to watch the original first, however, this was certainly a a much enjoyed re-make.

Some great performances here particularly Naomi Watts and Devon Gearhart (who took the part of the son), who certainly in one scene did a great job. Michael Pitt as always plays sinister well in a quiet psycho type way.

What I like most about this film is the lack of explanation and justification behind it and the lack of analysis of the characters. The audience participation added to the creativity of the piece.

Interesting, enjoyable and pretty unique.
4
The Number 23 (2007,  R)
The Number 23
Despite it?s depressing tone throughout, The Number 23 develops into an impressive conspiracy, mystery, psychological Thriller. I tend to find Jim Carrey?s serious roles more entertaining and find the films he chooses and the roles he plays very intense and thought provoking.

There was a hint of Graphic Novel style added to some of the film too, which worked pretty well.

This film, perhaps, isn?t for everyone, but if you like Thrillers, that get into your head and add an element of unpredictability, this film may be your kind of thing.
5
Shattered (Butterfly on a Wheel) (2007,  R)
Shattered (Butterfly on a Wheel)
A film I underestimated greatly and one that develops into a clever little Thriller. Enjoyable performances all around.

The concept of the film really makes you question, how to choose between the lesser of two evils and in parts really shows you the fear through the character.

An enjoyable surprise.
6
The Brave One (2007,  R)
The Brave One
A great take on a vigilante film, quite a slow paced movie, but I feel this aided the fear process turning into anger and vengeance.

Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard, both did great roles.
7
Gone Baby Gone (2007,  R)
Gone Baby Gone
Ben Affleck works with brother Casey Affleck in his Directional debut Gone Baby Gone. This interesting Thriller gives a different angle of investigation for this theme and defintely triggers thoughts of real life cases with similar media attention.

Adapted from a novel, Ben Affleck managed to create an element of grittyness, with enjoyable performances from all of the main cast, especially Amy Ryan who was very convincing in her role.

One thing I did struggle with slightly was hearing Casey Affleck speak at times and I'm not sure whether this was down to him or his accent (something I've never found with an American film before).

A story which shines through the simplistic approach and does well to stay away from the Hollywood glamourisation.
8
Mr. Brooks (2007,  R)
9
Antikörper (Antibodies) (2007,  Unrated)
Antikörper (Antibodies)
Antibodies really exceded my expectations on many levels. Firstly as a fictional story of a serial killer, this has to be the best one since ?The Silence of the Lambs?. It was controversial, made you feel uncomfortable in parts, it was casted well, especially in the case of the serial killer.

In terms of World Cinema, this is way up there with the best, it?s also high up there as a Thriller, as there are twists and turns that left me shouting at the tv screen!

If you enjoy films which cover any of these genres (Serial Killer, World cinema and Thrillers) give it a watch, it?s impressive, you won?t be disappointed.
10
Outlaw (2007,  R)
Outlaw
A great gritty British vengeance film, where vigilantes take a stand against the bullies in society.

Just when I thought Sean Bean was past his prime, he pulls off a part that suits him really well.
11
Premonition (2007,  PG-13)
Premonition
The remake of a Japanese film of the same name becomes an enjoyable Hollywood psychological Thriller.

Quite a bizarre storyline, turn your head for a moment and it?s easy to lose what?s happening.
12
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007,  R)
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
An extremely surprising find with possibly Ethan Hawke?s best performance to date, plus great performances from both Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Albert Finney. The flashbacks are a tad tiresome at times, but the editing of them are very clever in the storytelling. A unique angle for the ?robbery? theme films and one that just got better and better as it went on.
13
El Orfanato (The Orphanage) (2007,  R)
El Orfanato (The Orphanage)
The Orphanage is a Thriller which gives some wonderfully tense moments and really made me jump on a couple of occasions.

Not your average ghost story, this is a beautifully created horror, whilst managing to steer away from predictable route, so many take and instead providing a genuine realistic account of an unknown world.
14
Perfect Stranger (2007,  R)
Perfect Stranger
A very enjoyable, non too complicated, whodunnit type of film, with a good twist.
15
Dead Man's Shoes (2006,  Unrated)
Dead Man's Shoes
Gritty, emotionally powerful, raw and what British Films should be made of. With an almost frightening reality to it, none of the cast could be faulted in this and the acting was of such a high standard that parts could have been mistaken as a documentary.

VERDICT: An absolute must see.
16
The Dead Girl (2006,  R)
The Dead Girl
Having not received many reviews or recommendations for this film, I thought it was sure to be a very average film and yet I was pleasantly surprised, it?s definitely my type of film.

Centred around all the main people effected when a dead girl is found and creatively chaptered, to enable the viewer to experience the effects and emotions felt by each individual surrounding the storyline, it was a unique style used for this type of film and with a good standard of Actors, this was a very enjoyable film.
17
The Prestige (2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige
Excellent! I'd been told by many people that I would like this and they were absolutely right.

At over 2 hours long, it's not without it's drawn out parts, however they are bearable. Great performances all round, Jackman, Bale, Caine and Johansson and you even manage to spot David Bowie in the cast at some point.

A great period film, thouroughly entertaining with a great finale.

VERDICT: A definite recommendation.
18
The Illusionist (2006,  PG-13)
The Illusionist
My second viewing and I enjoyed it even more this time around. Perhaps this was because I wasn?t comparing to ?The Prestige? and watched it as a film in it?s own right.

This is clever little mystery love story.

I wonder how many people have tried the trick they give away in the film?
19
Deja Vu (2006,  PG-13)
Deja Vu
A very enjoyable time travel type film. I've heard people getting confused at the ending and I can see why, but think I got it and thought it was very cleverly done.

This would certainly benefit from multiple viewings, a great story, which reminded me slightly of Minority Report (but better).
20
Ne le Dis à Personne (Tell No One) (2006,  Unrated)
Ne le Dis à Personne (Tell No One)
This fairly lengthly feature is very well put together, from an enjoyable soundrack, believable acting and storyline which pulls you in emotionally, to a well plotted ended. This film ticks lots of boxes for me and I certainly recommend.

Possibly my favourite French speaking film ? Impressive.
21
Lucky Number Slevin (2006,  R)
Lucky Number Slevin
A much better film than it first appears, clever plot, with some humourous sarcastic wit, love the 'Kansas City Shuffle'
22
The Departed (2006,  R)
The Departed
A complicated web of deceipt of corruption, violence crafted with twists and turns throughout.

Many have chosen the original Chinese version of the story ?Infernal Affairs? to be the best version and usually in most cases I believe the original to be the best, but have to say ?The Departed? marginally scores better with me and is a very worthy Scorsese masterpiece.

Probably the best Hollywood gangster movie since Goodfellas, with a gifted all star cast, with a superb performance by Jack Nicholson and great performances by both Dicaprio and Damon.

With greatly fitting music throughout, the right amount of humour and fantastic plot ? it?s a Hollywood must see.
23
Stay (2005,  R)
Stay
The weirdness surrounding this film makes for compelling viewing, enjoyable performances from all three main characters.

This is the second time I have watched this film and despite really liking it, I still don't totally get the ending.
24
Freedomland (2006,  R)
Freedomland
Most definitely my favourite performance by Julieanne Moore. There is more than one storyline here. Great performances also from Samuel L.Jackson and a smaller part from Edie Falco.

VERDICT: Without a doubt, I recommend watching (however I'm not gonna send out recommendations for this film, in light of topical issues)
25
Oldboy (2005,  R)
26
13 Tzameti (2005,  Unrated)
13 Tzameti
Although not graphically violent in terms of blood and gore, this film reminded me of a more serious version of 'Hostel' and perhaps a little of Johnny Depps 'The
Brave'. The black and white filming suited the darkness of the piece.

It does take a little warming up and reach the main storyline, but once the main body of the story emerges, it transports the relentless fear and adrenalin that the lead character experiences in a realistic fashion. The lack of dialogue at times heightens the suspense and fear.

An intriguing watch, unlike any kind of gambling film you've ever seen.
27
Mindhunters (2005,  R)
Mindhunters
Although this is a little corny in parts, it's definitely my type of movie. Criminal profilers in a situation of survival.

I'm not quite sure if Johnny Lee Miller's accent was entirely convincing to anyone else, it seemed really over the top to me, but maybe that's because I know what his speaking voice is like usually.

Maybe people who enjoyed 'Saw' would like this film, although there is slightly less gore
28
Hide and Seek (2005,  R)
Hide and Seek
I found this much more enjoyable, second time around, shows yet another side to Robert De Niro's acting skills and young Dakota Fanning is just great in all her roles too, I think this was possibly the best film she has been in. Quite spooky in bits, but it's a great watch and a great twist too
29
Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs) (2002,  R)
Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs)
A film I've been meaning to see for so long and at last I have. It has to be the first film I've watched where I like both the original and the remake (The Departed) equally.

The storyline here is a truly original and clever idea, increasing in tempo as the polt unfolds.
30
Suspect Zero (2004,  R)
Suspect Zero
A very enjoyable watch with a great performance from Ben Kingsley. A well thought out plot, definitely a recommendation.
31
Secuestro Express (2005,  R)
Secuestro Express
A very realistic feel of a story of a kidnapping. Impressive actiing all round, in particular Mia Maestro. The kidnapping gang are played by members of one of South America's most popular rap groups 'Vagos Y Maleantes' Gritty and action packed, this film will hold you from start to finish.
32
Criminal (2004,  R)
Criminal
Any brits out there who enjoyed the series Hustle will probably enjoy this film. Tricks of a con-man and apprentice, clever plot and an enjoyable watch.
33
Taking Lives (2004,  Unrated)
Taking Lives
Not a bad serial killer movie, certainly a unique story and one I've watched many times.
34
The Machinist (2004,  R)
The Machinist
Fascinatingly weird and utterly brilliant, a story which unravels slowly and reveals an outstanding ending.

The controversial appearance of Bale in this film is so devastating to watch. He truly ran risks to his health for this role, losing 63 lb to accomplish the look, which although is a rather drastic action, it's not exactly a recommended way of doing things, however, the story obviously benefitted from the transformation.

A superb performance by Bale and for those of you who enjoy the weird and wonderful, this was will dazzle.
35
Gothika (2003,  R)
Gothika
A film that isn?t highly rated by most, but remains to be one of my favourites and most re-watched films that I own.

Gothika has the dark creepy atmosphere, which is maintained throughout the film and a storyline which urges you to feel the frustration of the main characters, played by Halle Berry and Penelope Cruz.

Admittedly it has it?s clichéd moments and it?s not without predictability, but it?s certainly worth watching (in my opinion) if you enjoy supernatural Thrillers.

'Behind Blue Eyes' became one of my favourite songs after watching this film.
36
Identity (2003,  R)
Identity
A film I've enjoyed watching over and over, corny yet quite a clever twist and storyline.

Overall a really enjoyable film.
37
In the Cut (2003,  R)
In the Cut
Really impressed with this one, hadn't heard of it before and not the type of film I would've expected Meg Ryan to have been in, but she did a very good job, as did Mark Ruffalo. The film itself is quite slow moving, but I think that was the beauty of it as it made it more realistic. Avery enjoyable serial killer movie
38
The Recruit (2003,  PG-13)
The Recruit
My favourite of Colin Farrell's films, this is a great storyline, I really enjoyed it.
39
The Life of David Gale (2003,  R)
The Life of David Gale
An intriguing and revealing story about a man on death row. Both Spacey and Linney play fantastic roles, the plot holds you from start to finish and has clever twists
40
I'm Not Scared (,  R)
41
Phone Booth (2003,  R)
Phone Booth
A film I have watched over and over, a genius notion for a low budget film to be filmed all in the same place, this can only work if the storyline is good enough to carry it through with a life changing phone call from a killer with menace in his voice, blackmail provides enough ammunition to control the circumstances of individuals predicament.
42
21 Grams (2003,  R)
43
Mystic River (2003,  R)
Mystic River
Directed by Clint Eastwood and boasting an all star cast of some of Hollywood?s most talented Actors. This is Hollywood minus the Hollywood glint, it?s down to earth, believable, with some impressive performances all around, in particular, Tim Robins, Sean Penn and Marcia Gay Harden.

This Murder mystery, turned vigilante storyline is tough, raw and deeply personal.

The brilliance of the film is that it doesn?t just build to a climatic ending, there are some pretty big things that happen throughout the film that make a huge impact.

One of my favourite films that I have watched over and over.
44
City by the Sea (2002,  R)
City by the Sea
A film that questions family loyalty and doing the right thing. Strong performances by De Niro and McDormand and an intriguing story.
45
Ted Bundy (2002,  R)
Ted Bundy
I enjoyed this movie at the time, but time for a re-watch
46
Tattoo (2002,  Unrated)
Tattoo
Really good film, be warned it is sub-titles but the story is great.
47
Heaven (2002,  R)
Heaven
This Itlian speaking film (with a small amount of English speaking) is a little slow moving, but has a very interesting story. Cate Blanchett of course (as always) is brilliant, pairing with Giovanni Ribisi once again, who also gave a great performance.

Ironically there is a sense of freedom found in them being fugitives and the spark between them (in other circumstances) would probably not have ignited
48
Murder by Numbers (2002,  R)
Murder by Numbers
I love this film and have watched it over and over, Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt play great roles as young school kids plotting a more than perfect murder.

I much prefer seeing Sandra Bullock in this kind of film and of course co-staring is British Actor Ben Chaplin.

No boring parts, cleverly written and there are great twists.
49
Red Dragon (2002,  R)
Red Dragon
I can?t count the number of times I?ve watched this particular instalment to the series, but it?s cast alone is very impressive. Unlike the film ?Hannibal? Red Dragon is the film out of the four that is most like the original film ?The Silence of the Lambs?. With a unique way of telling the story (in terms of going backwards in order of instalments) the story unfolds and gives insight into how Dr Lecter was captured in the first place.

Yet another good storyline of a Serial Killer awaiting to be caught, with a much more divulged storyline than in SOTL. Ralph Fiennes played this part well, for which I gained a new respect for him in this serious role.

As with the other films in this series, there is an offering of Interlect and Culture, which is what adds to the mystery of the killers.
50
Irreversible (2002,  Unrated)
Irreversible
Told in the tradition of that in "Memento" i.e the storyline is played backwards, the film opens with a very visually dark scene accompanied by a pretty bizarre sound (that's still running through my head!! ha ha), along with some very dizzy filming, the viewer isn't particularly aware of what is going on straight away, but within the first couple of scenes the storyline developes and of course you are intrigued to know, how it all began.

The married couple, Cassel and Bellucci are great together on screen in this unique, bizarre and very entertaining film. One scene in particular is very daring and controversial.

Another great performance from Cassel who seems to manage to express every emotion possible throughout the process of the film.
51
Frailty (2002,  R)
Frailty
One of my favourite films and one of the best film twists ever.

A sinister tale, well written and put together well, I never tire from watching this and never fail to be impressed.

To anyone who hasn't watched this film yet, you really should.
52
Making a Killing (Murder by Design) (2002,  R)
Making a Killing (Murder by Design)
I don't believe I have ever seen so many twists in a film. The plot I felt was brilliant, it's a shame that the acting didn't quite measure so highly, which was probably down to the obvious low budget.

VERDICT: It entertained and did the trick
53
Minority Report (2002,  PG-13)
Minority Report
The storyline of this film is very good.
54
Don't Say a Word (2001,  R)
Don't Say a Word
A fantastic performance by Brittany Murphy makes this story so great. My favourite performance of hers to date. Original story, covering a heist, a mental institution and a kidnap

VERDICT: Definitely recommend.
55
The Devil's Backbone (Espinazo del diablo, El) (2001,  R)
The Devil's Backbone (Espinazo del diablo, El)
Slightly disappointed that it wasn't as scary as I'd hoped it would be, but impressive all the same. The boys were all great actors and the storyline is original.

Another enjoyable film from this Director
56
From Hell (2001,  R)
From Hell
Jack the Ripper; one of the most infamous serial killers of all time is still very much an unsolved enigma to this day. ?From Hell? tells the story through partial fact and partial theory, which opens the suggestion to a high level conspiracy surrounding the murders, which at least leaves you pondering the possiblity.

The set build was accurately constructed to represent the dark streets of Whitechapple, with the alleyways providing the murder sites of the women who were killed, which was shown with great effects by the flashes of the steel of the blade along with an almost subliminal images, which were effective.

Possibly an equally frightening thought was the surgery carried out on perfectly healthy people to render them catatonic, where they carried out out the rest of their days in a mental institution.

The sub-plot of Johnny Depp?s character, was to reveal a dark, fearless character who seemed to have given up on his own life, this goes on to show an addiction to ?chasing the dragon? along with drinking ?absinthe?, which we probably think of more as a modern day issue and so was a revealing factor of that time.

The acting was far from perfect, with Robbie Coltrane coming across very much as the humour of his tv character ?Cracker?. Many of the accents weren?t entirely convincing (even Johnny Depp) but they weren?t unbearably bad either. This film still remains to be a favourite of mine though and Ripperologists and Serial Killer film fans will certainly enjoy, if they have not already managed to have watched this.

As an extra the Special Features include a vast amount of information on the original case and a lot of behind the scenes footage and certainly worth the watch.
57
Hannibal (2001,  R)
Hannibal
Hannibal is a film which benefits from multiple viewing. When I first watched this film at the cinema at the time of it?s release (having already watched ?The Silence of the Lambs?), I?d anticipated a much more tense thriller, instead it was one of the first films to really show something gory, particular the end scene (but perhaps not to today?s standard).

On re-watching this film several times, I can really appreciate it as a well put together Psychological piece. We get to see the real Hannibal outside of the institution for the first time, we indulge in his love of culture and sophistication.

Following in Jodie Foster?s Footsteps, must have been a daunting task for Julianne Moore, who in her own way put her own mark on the role of Clarise Starling, however I do feel that Jodie Foster should have been in this sequel as the whole continuity would have worked better.

Overall a different, yet unpredictable film, which kept the interest of the Hannibal Lector fans.
58
Training Day (2001,  R)
Training Day
One of my favourite performances from Denzel Washington and a great corrupt undercover police story.

What a first Day!!! I really like the fact this all happened during one day, it added a realistc feel to it and a view to the escalating circumstances, whilst the characters grow throughout.
59
Memento (2000,  R)
Memento
You need a lot of concentration for this film, it starts at the end and works back to the beginning. Guy Pearce plays a man who after an incident cannot make new memories and relies on the facts tattoo'd on his body and the photographs he carries around to work out who his wife's killer is.
60
The Crimson Rivers (Les Rivières pourpres) (2001,  R)
The Crimson Rivers (Les Rivières pourpres)
This French speaking, English sub-titled film, was a refreshing enjoyable watch with superb performances by Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel.

The only bad for me is that I don't think it will reach the desired audience purely because of the sub-titles which is a shame.
61
The Gift (2000,  R)
The Gift
This film has always been a favourite of mine, it?s a great supernatural thriller. Cate Blanchett (as always) gives a very strong performance, a likeable performance too from Giovani Ribisi.

My very small annoyance was Katie Holmes (I?m not quite sure why I despise the girl so much?) but it?s slightly irrating to put her in the same league as the rest of the cast in this film, however her appearance really doesn?t affect the film or the plot.

This is an intriguing story, which offers something different to the ?whodunnit? type of mystery.
62
Stir of Echoes (1999,  R)
Stir of Echoes
it's this type of film that has made Kevin Bacon a more interesting actor in the last few years. This is a reallygood film from start to finish, the supernatural dealt with in a natural way. Clever storyline.

VERDICT: A definite recommendations, certainly my favourtie Kevin Bacon film
63
Flawless (1999,  R)
Flawless
Another great film from Joel Schumacher, with a great performance from De Niro (as always) who very convincingly played a Stroke patient, but even more impressive was the performance given by Philip Seynour Hoffman, who delivered (in my opinion) his best performance to date. I love the way this unlikely friendship develops and is a very enjoyable film.
64
The Green Mile (1999,  R)
The Green Mile
This is certainly my favourite Stephen King adaption to date. The story is so original and all characters are developed so well, whether you love them or hate them.

I think most people would have taken to the character of John Coffey and felt the bitter/sweet of the story.

Also a quick look at the set and talk with Stephen King on the special features, which is worth a look.
65
The Sixth Sense (1999,  PG-13)
The Sixth Sense
One of the greatest twists ever! Just remembering back to when I watched this for the very first time ? the ending was brilliant and everything suddenly makes sense. Even as a re-watch, knowing what?s to come, the film was created in such a way that almost every angle was covered. If you look hard enough and analyse everything you will come up with some flaws, but it?s such an enjoyable and clever film, the flaws are just not important.
66
Stigmata (1999,  R)
Stigmata
A very deep and powerful story with controversial content. Wonderful performances from Patricia Arquette and Gabriel Byrne.

A story unlike any other, with music throughout that sets the mood of the tale.

Not a film for the easily distracted, but one I definitely recommend.
67
A Perfect Murder (1998,  R)
A Perfect Murder
The remake of Hitchcock?s ?Dial M for Murder? and a good job of it was made. Some slight variences from the original storyline, but all the important parts were included.

A story with great twists, Douglas plays rich and arrogant very well and we see a not so well known at the time Viggo Mortensen too.

A great thriller, based on love, betrayal, revenge and money.
68
Deceiver (Liar) (1998,  R)
Deceiver (Liar)
Known in the UK as 'Liar'. Great film, clever story, good twists and totally original, probably the best part I've seen Tim Roth play
69
Sling Blade (1997,  R)
Sling Blade
Wow! Billy Bob Thornton's performance in this film was amazing. Billy Bob, not only starred in this amazing film but also wrote and directed it and hit the jackpot on all three. It's a long viewing, but most certainly needed, great performances all around.
70
Donnie Brasco (1997,  R)
Donnie Brasco
A good film which I re-watched recently. Undercover cop who gets close to Gangsters
71
Face (1997,  R)
Face
One of my favourite British films, so many well know faces in this film, both big stars like Ray Winston, Robert Carlisle and Phil Davis, along with lots of others that Brits will recognise.

A story of a robbery that turns into a dog eat dog competition of greed.

I think Robert Carlisle has to be one of the best British actors at perfecting different regional accents.

VERDICT: Quite an old film now, but if you've not seen it, give it a watch, I have probably watched this film around 10 times at least
72
187 (1997,  R)
187
A great film, totally recomend people to watch this
73
L' Appartement (The Apartment) (1996,  R)
L' Appartement (The Apartment)
I was completely blown away by this storyline. The plot travels along steadily at first and is very 2-dimensional, but soon enough, come clever flashbacks, sub-plots and intertwining relationships, which all managed to link together and yet still keeps you surprised throughout.

Vincent Cassell is as always impressive and monica Bellusi (something I rarely comment on!) was absolutely stunning.

Enjoyably confusing and quite brilliant.
74
A Time to Kill (1996,  R)
A Time to Kill
This film is probably the most emotionally powerful film I've ever watched. If this doesn't pull at your heart strings nothing will.
75
Primal Fear (1996,  R)
Primal Fear
A very enjoyable courtroom drama, with another great performance from a younger Edward Norton, a very clever story with a great twist
76
Copycat (1995,  R)
Copycat
An original plot for a serial killer film and although it?s not exceptionally well acted, it is the plot in this one, that is the main focus of the film. The more you know of Serial Killers the more fascinating the storyline becomes, we see the investigation from a Detectives view, a victim?s view and an analytical view from a criminal profile.

This does happen to be one of my favourite watch over and over films, but that of course is my appeal with the subject matter.

Watch out for a very different looking Harry Connick Jr, who plays quite a quirky psychopath.

Film speeches:

The screams of the victim deaden his pain, the act of killing makes him feel intensely alive, what he feels next is not guilt, but disappointment, it was not as wonderful as he?d hoped, maybe next time it will be perfect and as his determination builds to take another life, he plans in obsessive detail what props he?ll bring, what knots he?ll tie.
77
The Usual Suspects (1995,  R)
The Usual Suspects
Billient, still as good today as when I first saw it, great twist, great cast, great story.

VERDICT: One of those films you will see in any film fanatics collection
78
The Net (1995,  PG-13)
The Net
If you like your conspiricy films and you haven't watched this one, I recommend you do.
79
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys) (1995,  R)
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys)
Great film at the time of it's release, really enjoyed it
80
Seven (Se7en) (1995,  R)
Seven (Se7en)
The film with the best film ending ever! David Fincher?s ?Seven? is one of those films you can endlessly watch over and over and never become bored of, when I remember back to the first time of watching it, the storyline was impressive, there were many tense moments and of course it has become one of the best and most remembered Serial Killer movies ever made. Kudos to Kevin Spacey for his short, but great role as John Doe.

I have to leave a speech from the film which is too long to put into the quote section above:

David Mills: Wait, I thought all you did was kill innocent people.
John Doe: Innocent? Is that supposed to be funny? An obese man... a disgusting man who could barely stand up; a man who if you saw him on the street, you'd point him out to your friends so that they could join you in mocking him; a man, who if you saw him while you were eating, you wouldn't be able to finish your meal. After him, I picked the lawyer and I know you both must have been secretly thanking me for that one. This is a man who dedicated his life to making money by lying with every breath that he could muster to keeping murderers and rapists on the streets!
David Mills: Murderers?
John Doe: A woman...
David Mills: Murderers, John, like yourself?
John Doe: [interrupts] A woman... so ugly on the inside she couldn't bear to go on living if she couldn't be beautiful on the outside. A drug dealer, a drug dealing pederast, actually! And let's not forget the disease-spreading whore! Only in a world this shitty could you even try to say these were innocent people and keep a straight face. But that's the point. We see a deadly sin on every street corner, in every home, and we tolerate it. We tolerate it because it's common, it's trivial. We tolerate it morning, noon, and night. Well, not anymore. I'm setting the example. What I've done is going to be puzzled over and studied and followed... forever.

Léon (The Professional) (1994,  R)
Léon (The Professional)
A great film an unlikely story between a hit man and a little girl. Definitely recommend watching

Killing Zoe (1994,  R)
Killing Zoe
Directed by Roger Avery, Produced by Quentin Tarantino, amidst the height of the 90?s Cult drug fuelled storylines, topped with violent criminals and a chaotic bank robbery.

Some pretty good camera shot interpretations and probably the role Eric Stoltz is best known for (apart from his smaller role in Pulp Fiction that is).

Certainly not flawless and perhaps the one that has dated more than some of the other within this genre and era, but one woth watching.

Kalifornia (1993,  R)
Kalifornia
I prefer Brad Pitt when he's playing more grotesque characters like this. Juliette Lewis is great in pretty much everything and the storyline is very good. If you like those Serial Killer films, you'll like this one

The Fugitive (1993,  PG-13)

Single White Female (1992,  R)
Single White Female
Assuming this to be a cheesy 80?s film worked to it?s advantage for me, as it was a much more serious and suspenseful film than I set to give it credit for.

Despite the well know storyline of this film, it entertained from start to finish and brought excitement right up to the grand finale.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
Certainly my favourite Jodie Foster/Anthony Hopkins role, this is my genre, what could be a better story than to have a Serial Killer, profile another Serial Killer? This is a film that sets a benchmark for all other Serial Killer movies.

Also, on the second disc of the dvd is 'A Making of The Silence of the Lambs' which is pretty interesting and well worth a watch, if you like special feature

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991,  R)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY

When this film came out, I remember how everyone talked about the effects and the big budget spent on making the film, the effects are still pretty impressive and this sequel proved to be as popular, if not more popular than the first.

The change of Linda Hamilton?s appearance was great for this film, she became almost masculine looking from the training she?d undergone, but suited her new involved part well.

A very quotable film too and certainly Arnie?s best set of films.

Where is Edward Furlong at the moment, he was doing well for a while, but seems to have disappeared again.

Cape Fear (1991,  R)
Cape Fear
This 1991 version of Cape Fear, has to be one of the best remakes ever, especially as the original was so good. Not Scorseses usual style of film, but DeNiro is outstanding as lead character Max Cady, a role in which DeNiro researched and built up the part to play including going to prisons to pick out tattoos. Great performances also to Juliette Lewis and Jessica Lange.

Anyone who hasn't yet seen this film is in for a real treat, as although this is a film I watch over and over, there is nothing like the instensity I felt the first time of viewing.

Revenge (1990,  R)
Revenge
A tragic love story with an unexpected ending for me.

I know many find Costner a little cheesy, but I happen to find he has been in some really good films, this one included.

All in all a pretty decent film.

Ghost (1990,  R)
Ghost
It's quite unbelievable to think that this film is 18 years old. It made such an impact during it's arrival in 1990 that there can't be many people left who haven't seen this classic.

These are the type of films you can watch over and over and know most of the lines (Willie Lopez - 303 Prospect Place....) yes I think I've seen it too many times, but still manage to spot something different each time.

Patrick Swayze, already having made stardom through his role in Dirty Dancing was familier to us, but it was Whoopi Goldberg, with her comical input that really livened this film up.

Of course this is one of those films where whenever 'Unchained Melody' is played we automatically think of the potter's wheel scene.

The Terminator (1984,  R)
The Terminator
One of the most frustrating films I've ever watched. It just keeps coming back, good though
92
Cruising (1980,  R)
Cruising
Highly controversial in it?s time, both in subject matter and portraying the Gay scene and Leather scene in a bad light. It?s very much a film way ahead of it?s time.

Partially based on true events and a real-life undercover cop situation, the film is of interst on many levels. What the film lacks (to it?s credit) is lack of explanation, justification and a particular view point ? leaving viewers to make their own views on the film itself.

I think this film is of interest more as a controversial piece than perhaps just it?s storyline, but one that was an interesting watch, suggestion and subliminal messaging are key behind it?s non graphic impact.

Moments of confusion from the story can be easily cleared up by the Special Features, which are worth taking a look at.

Taxi Driver (1976,  R)
Taxi Driver
A film of absolute brillience, I last watched this iflm in my teens when I just didn't get the greatness of it.

Robert De Niro was outstanding as the character Travis Bickle, living in a bit of a fantasy world, ever so gradually turning himself mad from the lonliness and too much time to think. He's angry about the world he lives in and the scum that breathe the same air as him. Although a relatively short role, Jodie Foster playing a 12 and a half year old hooker is just another excellent performance to add to her list. She was probably the best young actress out there.

This film will have you glued to the screen. There's no doubt that in Robert De Niro's career as an actor, that this one of his finest performances.

VERDICT: I just can't promote this film enough, it's an absolute must see and one of the best performances of all time.

Jaws (1975,  PG)
Jaws
As a kid this film really scared me, I bought it recently to re-watch, I enjoyed it.
95
Frenzy (1972,  R)
Frenzy
Hitchcock was definitely a Director ahead of his time, just imagine the kind of films he would be directing now if he could.

In Frenzy, Hitchcock builds up the characters before the big part of the story unleashes. A few familer faces, such as Bernard Cribbings, Billie Whitelaw etc.

The plot, I should imaginewas quite sinister in it's day and still makes really good viewing now.

North by Northwest (1959,  Unrated)
North by Northwest
One of the longer Hitchcock films, Gary Grant is a comical character who finds himself being set up by agents for a number of crimes. This is an action packed film where Grant's character has to work hard to survive.

The very beautiful Eva marie Saint plays Grant's forward sexy love interest and seems to be quite intent in getting what she wants.

This film could fall under many categories, Action, Love, Thriller, Mistaken Identity.

On the special features, Eva Marie Saint (as she is today) takes us through the making of the film along with Hitchcock's daughter, which is an interesting watch also.

Dial M for Murder (1954,  PG)
Dial M for Murder
Impressive! I enjoyed the reamking of this in 'The Perfect Murder' with Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow, so was intigued to watch the original.

Filming most of this film in one place, is really creative on Hitchcock's part. It is all 'so terribly terribly British, but that certainly captures the era that the film was made in.

Strangers on a Train (1951,  PG)
Strangers on a Train
Brilliant yet simple, as are so many of Hitchcock's films, a very clever and sinister story for it's era.

White Heat (1949,  Unrated)
White Heat
Worthy of all it?s praise, Cagney just has great presence on screen and of course the lovable rogue image suits him well.

As a storyline, this ticks many boxes for me, a Gangster story, Robbery, Undercover operation and is such a good base story for modern day films and tv Dramas.

An instant favourite!

Rope (1948,  PG)
Rope
Another great Hitchcock film! Shot mainly in one location, with what appeared to be seemless filming, the characters are well developed and the plot provides great suspense. The storyline also demonstrates a thin line between theory and practice.

A comical role for Jimmy Stewart and without a doubt one of Hitchcock?s best.
101
Shadow of a Doubt (1943,  PG)
Shadow of a Doubt
A much underestimated and underrated Hitchcock Thriller, In fact this was Hitchcock?s favourite. Of course this appeals to my interest of Serial Killer films and it?s great to see an enjoyable early one.

The characters were all very developed here and the storyline is told from a unique perspective, in that it involves the Killer?s own family.

An enjoyable performance from X White and Joseph Cotton who are both new names for me.

4 STARS

Angels with Dirty Faces (1938,  Unrated)
Angels with Dirty Faces
Jimmy Cagney suited these roles so well and impressively they managed to pick a young ?Rocky? to look and sound just like him. A story with moralistic value of two young boys, whose lives are split in a moments notice, ultimately deciding each of their fates.

In my opinion one of the best ever film endings, which will leave you contemplating the outcome.

This always has been one of my personal favourites.

What Lies Beneath (2000,  PG-13)
What Lies Beneath
The thing that makes this film work so well, is the cleverly placed, typical Horror type scenarios, that never seem to materialise, yet keep you waiting for them to happen, check through the film, they are all there. Hence this becomes an edge of your seat Thriller, with heightened intensity that keeps your mind challenged.
