1
Persepolis (2007,  PG-13)
Persepolis
Totally unique, a film portraying a message that would benenfit many people to watch. Animated in sillouette style, this very serious subject matter is tackled controversially, yet in an educational way.

This film isn?t just about Culture, Religion, Polictics, battle of the sexes or Coming of age ? it?s a combination of all.

Refreshingly unique
2
The Kite Runner (2008,  PG-13)
The Kite Runner
From book to film this intriguing story is quite an insight into the war-torn years in Afghanistan. Directed by Marc Forster, the film appears authentic and natural.

The Kite Runner takes a little while to show which direction it is heading in, but during that period the foundations of the tale are set and character development is established.

The film evolves into a class dividing, guilt ridden, culture changing journey, which questions loyalty and friendship to the deepest of levels.

My one complain if any, is that the older Amir, was less of a good Actor than the boy who took the part of the younger Amir.
3
The Kingdom (2007,  R)
The Kingdom
A much more serious film than expected, with realistic action and effects. The story was a little boring, but did cover a storyline not often covered.
4
Before the Fall (Napola) (2004,  Unrated)
Before the Fall (Napola)
An intense Drama of powerful proportions. This is a film about ambition, conformity and above all, questioning beliefs. A film that cannot fail to make an impact on you.

The style of this film was an interesting perspective, aiming the storyline at the Cadet age group, which brought forward some interesting characters and led to some interesting training scenes.

A wonderful performance from Max Riemelt. This film is an instant favourite with me.
5
The Last Samurai (2003,  R)
The Last Samurai
A big production with some amazing views, a great quality film with a western view on the Samurai style films. It also captures the spiritual sense.

It is perhaps a little disappointing that people will watch, and have watched this film purely because of Tom Cruise being the lead, when although this is one of Cruise's better roles it certainly isn't the Cruise element that makes the film, but I'm sure he would have raised the box office ratings.
6
Dog Soldiers (2002,  R)
Dog Soldiers
Ok where do I start? Such mixed feelings about this film.

You have some great British Drama Actors here, Liam Cunningham, Kevin McKidd, plus Sean Pertwee etc and the acting throughout wasn?t bad, but the film itself was really poor. The werewolves were embarrassing ? I can?t believe a film of this time, with the evolution of special effects and make up etc have come up with this as a suitable horror.

The storyline isn?t original, it?s pretty much the same as many original werewolf movies, but the soldier part is thrown in as an extra.

A very minotinous film, with little appeal.
7
High Crimes (2002,  PG-13)
High Crimes
I like to think that my film ratings are aimed at great performances, storyline etc, rather than how good looking a person is, which is why this film gets a 3. It was an ok film, with ok performances and an ok storyline.

The reason I say this is because if I had such a thing as a list of good looking actors, then my guess would be, Jim Caviezel would be at the top.

VERDICT: Watchable, but forgetable
8
Musa (The Warriors) (Musa the Warrior) (2001,  R)
9
Charlotte Gray (2001,  PG-13)
Charlotte Gray
Such a different perspective on a war-time film, showing this through a strong woman?s eyes, in a man?s world. This story is essentially driven by love.

Blanchett yet again, pours emotion into her performance and is of course a believable role. I too, have to give Billy Crudup credit for his performance here which I feel is his greatest to date.

Impressive all around with a much enjoyed plot.
10
The Thin Red Line (1999,  R)
The Thin Red Line
A huge quality star cast, which I?m sure is a huge selling point for this film, however I would find it near impossible to relay this film to someone else, perhaps war films are not quite my forte and maybe this is an area which I just won?t get, afterall it did receive 7 Academy award nominations.
11
Goodnight, Mister Tom (1999,  Unrated)
12
G.I. Jane (1997,  R)
G.I. Jane
The ultimate movie of sex equality, it does have it?s ?Holywood Action? moments, which are set to dramatic music, but this is certainly my favourite performance by Demi Moore and of course you have to admire her athletic form in this film.

Incredibly, it took me at least two watches of this film before I realised it starred Viggo Mortensen (a neme that keeps popping up recently with surprising results).
13
A Few Good Men (1992,  R)
14
Platoon (1986,  R)
Platoon
A film it seemed, everyone had seen apart from me. Certainly interesting, but it did take a little while for me to take Charlie Sheen serious as I kept thinking of his role as Topper Harley in Hot Shots.

I know many will disagree for my rating of this film, but I didn't quite see it as an iconic, classic, or masterpiece of a film
15
Good Morning, Vietnam (1987,  R)
16
Full Metal Jacket (1987,  R)
Full Metal Jacket
Stanley Kubrick?s ?Full Metal Jacket? is one of the best war films made in my opinion. It?s very much a film of two parts, which I feel is the secret of the films' success. In the first part we see the training of the recruits, in the second we see them go to war, I've not seen any films from this genre that show both.

Admittedly I preferred the training part to the war part, but enjoyable throughout regardless. I felt Matthew Modine who played Joker was a great character in the film.

Many of the action shots of injury etc were very well done and apart from the colour of the blood were fairly realistic.

Glad I finally got around to watching this film, had many reviews for it and everyone else seems to have already watched it.
17
Escape From Sobibor (1987,  PG-13)
Escape From Sobibor
One of two films that have made me cry, very sad story about a POW camp
18
Top Gun (1986,  PG)
19
First Blood (Rambo: First Blood) (1982,  R)
First Blood (Rambo: First Blood)
The first film my parents ever hired when we bought our first Video recorder. I can?t help thinking; if only they had let him have something to eat?

Such an escalation of events for something that begins so trivial, yet a thoroughly entertaining film, even all these years later. Very typical of the 80?s Action genre, but one to be reflected on with enjoyment, I?m not and never have been a huge fan of Stallone and yet this film somehow works.
20
An Officer and a Gentleman (1982,  R)
An Officer and a Gentleman
A film I have watched over and over since I was a kid and annoyingly know pretty much every word to.

I am a self-confessed, non-girly girl and a flixster friend thought they'd made a breakthrough when they heard I liked this film, sorry to disappoint but it was the assort course, the relationship between Zac and Sid and the relationship between Zac and Serjeant Foley that I loved so much.

VERDICT: A film that everyone should watch at some point
21
Yanks (1979,  R)
22
Hanover Street (1979,  PG)
23
The Deer Hunter (1978,  R)
The Deer Hunter
After a slow start ?Deerhunter? evolves into an impressive piece of cinema history, with the ability to have as strong an impact today as it did at the time of it?s release.

With an impressive cast and strong performances by De Niro and Walken, this film totally pulls you in and really gets to your emotions.
