The English Patient (1996,  R)
The English Patient
I really enjoy a good romantic epic and no other story has been quite as grand and touching nor can any other compare with the way this film turns desert vistas into scenes of romantic beauty.
2
Eyes Wide Shut (1999,  R)

The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988,  R)
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Against the backdrop of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, a Prague doctor and womaniser finds himself in a relationship with the naive young Tereza, whilst still enjoying carnal delights with his artist lover. An intelligent romantic-drama with an insight into the politics of bohemian Prague at that time. It would seem too long at 3 hours if it were not for the numerous gratuitous sex scenes that add some spice to the more serious aspects of the drama.
4
Cidade de Deus, (City of God) (2003,  R)
Cidade de Deus, (City of God)
Epic biopic of life in a Brazilian favela, describing the rise and fall of a ruling gang during the 70s. A Brazilian "The Godfather" with great cinematography and a story to rival "The Shawshank Redemption".
5
The Shawshank Redemption (1994,  R)
6
Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001,  R)
Captain Corelli's Mandolin
Essentially "The English Patient" set on a Greek Island. It has all the same ingredients, but isn't quite such a powerful movie and the inconsistent accents hardly helped. Lots of Mediterranean charm and a worthy history lesson too.
7
The Lake House (2006,  PG)
The Lake House
An unapologetically cheesy love story that I won't apologise for enjoying, though perhaps my past-self would have enjoyed it more. It follows a simple sci-fi premise of two people striking up a correspondence despite being separated by time, 2 years, if not space, the Lake House. Thankfully the love story remains the focus of the movie throughout without any other distracting gimmicks other than the central premise, which drives the story really well.
8
Slumdog Millionaire (2008,  R)
Slumdog Millionaire
Scenes of our chai-wallah as a contestant on "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?" are interspersed with the back story explaining why he's lucky enough to know the answers. It's an interesting gimmick that provides a very accessible way for a Western audience to take in a biopic of Indian slum life. The love story plot was sweet, but somewhat cheesy, especially the ending.

4 Luni, 3 Saptamâni si 2 Zile (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) (2007,  R)
4 Luni, 3 Saptamâni si 2 Zile (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days)
Two students in communist Romania during the '80s seek out an illegal abortion. Despite a slow start this film imparts a very powerful message when it comes to the crux.
10
Starter for Ten (Starter for 10) (2006,  PG-13)
Starter for Ten (Starter for 10)
A group of Bristol students forming a University Challenge team provides a nostalgic return to university life in the 80s. A pleasant but fairly unremarkable romantic drama.
11
Last Resort (2001,  PG-13)

Il y a Longtemps que Je T'aime (I've Loved You So Long) (2008,  PG-13)
Il y a Longtemps que Je T'aime (I've Loved You So Long)
A very bleak drama that takes a lot of patience as the history of Juliette is slowly revealed, but is worth the wait in the end.
13
Breaking and Entering (2007,  R)
Breaking and Entering
A typical British TV drama with an ultimately pointless story, but pleasant enough to watch. The London settings and brief bits of parkour add interest.
14
Brick Lane (2008,  PG-13)
Brick Lane
A look into the life of a Bangladeshi immigrant living in Brick Lane, London, with her family & husband from an arranged marriage. It's a fairly average, pleasant TV drama. The most interesting character development actually centres around her husband.
15
On a Clear Day (2006,  PG-13)
On a Clear Day
Laid off Glasgow dock worker tries to find some meaning to his life by swimming the English channel. It's a fairly light, British chum drama that will comfortably fill a spare hour and a half. I found the subplot a rather vague, unnecessary distraction and not all the acting was first class.
16
Earth (1999,  Unrated)
Earth
An interesting account of the period around the independence of India, portraying, in a personal way, the devastating effect of the country's separation on the various communities, Sikh, Hindu, Muslim and Parsi, in Lahore at the time.
17
The Mother (2004,  R)
The Mother
Soap-style British chick-flick that's pleasant enough background viewing until the graphic Daniel Craig on grandmother sex scene...
18
Between Two Women (2000,  Unrated)
Between Two Women
LoveFILM sent it me by mistake. Nice 50s scenes of Northern England but the dialogue between lead characters was ever so cheesy and the plot hopeless shallow.
