The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings is the definitive adventure story, which after all is what fantasy movies should be all about. And Peter Jackson has made the definitive cinematic version of this story, translating the sense of awe and wonder from the novels perfectly.

Return to Oz
Very scary, but amazing scene designs and an engrossing plot. This was one of the first movies I saw as a kid where I was immersed in all the hype leading up to what was perhaps the biggest movie event of the summer of '85.

El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006,  R)
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
A child's fantasy in the middle of fascist post-civil war Spain. The beauty of this movie lies in the luscious fantasy world it portrays, but the plot is very weak, never developing the world as much as I, the viewer, would like and the story feels too short, destroying the fantasy world it creates by just suggesting it was all in the child's imagination. So, overall, it's fairly average.

The Golden Compass (2007,  PG-13)
The Golden Compass
A great kids' Xmas movie. I liked the concept of the daemons and would have loved it as a kid. The "chosen child" theme is always a hit with kids. The idea behind the story is a nice fantasy with a sci-fi influence but there's not enough substance to it in this movie to be fully absorbing to adults. Maybe there'll be more depth in the sequels?

King Kong (1976,  PG)

Mostly just one big, fun cartoon battle scene. The rest of the movie is full of cliché - it's no Gladiator (despite stealing the theme tune). A triumph of style over substance, much like Sin City, but much more fun.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (2005,  PG)

Delicatessen (1991,  R)
Delicatessen
Another beautiful, yet dark, movie from Jean-Pierre Jeunet, with his trade mark colour themes. It's a weird sci-fi fantasy story, portrayed with Tim Burton-esque dark humour, of presumably a post-apocalyptic world, where people must eat each other to survive. For some mysterious reason I always find it hard to the follow the simple yet clever plots of Jean-Pierre Jeunet movies.

The Dark Crystal (1982,  PG)

La Cité des Enfants Perdus (The City of Lost Children) (1995,  R)
La Cité des Enfants Perdus (The City of Lost Children)
Another bizarre, graphic fantasy from Jean-Pierre Jeunet. A fairly-tale dark enough to be worthy of Tim Burton about an inventor who cannot dream so kidnaps children to steal their dreams. Visually impressive but the plot meanders too much.
23
Jurassic Park III (2001,  PG-13)

The Nightmare Before Christmas (2008,  PG)
