genre: sci-fi movies
here is a list of sci-fi movies i have seen in order of favorites. like with war films, sci-fi is an incredibly difficult genre to define. if defined too narrowly many great sci-fi films are left out, if defined too broadly there is no limit to what can be included. I have decided to define sci-fi as anything with space and aliens. as well, i include all futuristic films only if there is an element of science involved, so post apocalyptic films like the postman get left out but most other futuristic films fit. I have also decided to make this list live action only because including animated films opens things up too much. I have also included monster movies, but only those that are phenomenological, so king kong is in but jaws does not qualify. finally, i have limited the list to my top 30. if i went beyond 30 there would just be too many as this is a big genre. here is the list of my top 30 sci-fi films in order.

Transformers (2007, PG-13)
rediculously, phenomonally, incredibally, wonderfully fantastic in every way. one of the best films i have ever seen in my life. michael bay is usually not very good, but he delivered. there were a few typical michael bay sequences that another director could have done better on, but overall the cgi, acting, and storyline were remarkeable. shia lebeouf was amazing and the casting was done very well. i couldnt think of a single poorly casted role in this film. i got goose bumps on 3 different scenes, especially when you hear optimus speak for the first time. the comedy was great, really funny and never corny, and the action was equally impressive. this is normally not the type of film i would hype up this much but its too good. it made me fall back into the love affair i had with the transformers when i was 5. |

King Kong (1933, Unrated)
the original cinema classic in all its glory, one of my favorite films. i happen to be a believer that the two remakes of this iconic film were fine films that did this justice, but niether of them beats the king. the effects for 1933 were well done and this is just a really fun film to watch. the end scene gets me in each incarnation of this film. while the others create kong as a sypathetic character, this film sort of portrays kong and humanity as possessing equality in their villiany. a wonderful movie. |

Deja Vu (2006, PG-13)
fantastic film. a sci-fi set in contemporary time about people who can see the past as its happening. i know that doesnt make sense, how can you see something thats already happened as its happening, you just have to watch the film. denzel takes this film to a level it probably couldnt have reached with another actor, and jim caviezel plays a great bad guy. you really have to think this film through for it to make sense, but when enough thought is put to it i dont see how anyone could not think of this film as fantastic. |

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968, G)
four stars is a very high score for me. while i am confident in giving four stars to this american classic, this is probably the highest score ive ever given a film that i had so many problems with. ill start with the negatives. |

Ghost Busters (Ghostbusters) (1984, PG)
total classic, bill murray is hilarious in this original and fun movie. it was executed well and begged for a sequel. the nuances of the script were suprisingly well thought out and there was a seriousness fused into such a story that was so out there that could have been risky but worked very well. a perfect 80's adventure comedy. |

Alien (1979, R)
i just rewatched this film again, and i was reminded of why this is not your average creature feature. although similar films have been made since, this film really helped to catapult an entire style of scifi film that has really not been done nearly as well as this. truly one of the great scifi films in history. |

Star Trek (2009, PG-13)
i absolutely loved this flick. i was expecting less, but it delivered. although ive seen a little of the show, ive never been a star trek fan, but this movie is making me want to go back and watch the other films in the franchise. it wasnt a perfect film, but i cant complain about anything as the film was exactly what it was trying to be. great action, solid performances for a sci-fi flick, an interesting story, and solid special effects. a really enjoyable film. |

I Am Legend (2007, PG-13)
i loved this movie. will smith did an excellent job and the film flowed well. no time was wasted on the meaningless, i felt that every scene was essential. to see smith create community with dummies and risk his life for his dog shows humanities need for relationship. this is defintely one of the better films of 2007. |

District 9 (2009, R)
this is an excellent film. with no experience blomkamp put together an excellent sci-fi film that is destined to be a classic in coming years. although there were a few minor cliches present most of the film was highly original, the development of the two main characters was effective, and the Christological ending was extremely well done. im looking forward to see what blomkamp will do next, and in the mean time i will enjoy this wonderful sci-fi flick. |

The Time Machine (1960, G)
as much an anti-war film as it is a time traveling sci-fi film, time machine does a great job delving into important philosophical positions amidst a somewhat cheesy but interesting plot. while most films about the distant future focus on advancement, this story see's the future as a place of regression due to mankinds constant need to fight each other. the one problem developed through the film involving the time travel was seemingly solved at the end, and the other problem with the language devolving of the morlocks is insignificant enough to pass over. this film drew me to thoughts of where the world is going, its biggest flaw being that it is set in a world with an atheistic mindset that assumes that man is the point or is ultimately in control, but it is still an interesting film to think through. |

Cloverfield (2008, PG-13)
what a great start to the 2008 movie year. sort of a hybrid of the styles of godzilla and blair witch but much better than both, this film builds great anticipation and stirs the creative juices of its viewer. there were missteps but they were seldom and insignificant, for the most part this film was exactly what it wanted to be and exactly what i expected. many in my screen room were dissapointed at the end because of the information that the viewer is left with, i say those people missed the point of why the film was done the way it was. easily one of the best monster movies ive ever seen. |

Metropolis (1927, Unrated)
often considered cinema's first great masterpiece, its a shame that some of the scenes from this fritz lang classic are lost to us forever. i feel that the film only preserves so well despite its missing pieces because it is a silent film and can be filled in with text screens, because i was still engaged in the story from start to finish. the only real critique of the film is that some of the actions of the characters didnt fit the story that well, but overall this film is highly effective in its scale as it tells a great science fiction story for its era. an impressive film that any true film fan should see. |

Blade Runner (1982, R)
this is such a hard film to score. in many ways the film was dull and cliche, losing its originality in now being listed among the many sci-fi films to give us a typical dark and bleak outlook on the future. in other ways the script was fascinating and the concept full of intrigue. i do feel that based on the plot the film could have been miles better, but in the end this is still a very, very good movie. |
