genre: war movies

  1. sanjurosamurai
  2. danny

here is the list of war films that i have seen. this is a tough genre for me because there are many of the classic war films that i have either yet to see or need to rewatch before i rate them and rank them. it is also a tough genre because i find it to be the one genre most disagree on in terms of what films can or should be included. my criteria is that a war film is any combat film focused on the conflict and can be from any era. there must also be an element of reality involved so overly fantasaical war films like LOTR do not qualify. here is the list in order.

incredible. one of the best films ive seen in the last year. extremely sad and realistic. ken watanabe was fantastic and the direction was great. you can see the samurai honored culture maintain in soldier life clear into the 20th century, the japanese may fight differently than we do, but the film does a great job of showing the true humanity of all people on all sides of war. one of the greatest war films of all time.

Ran (2000,  R)
Ran 4.5 Stars
what a fantastic movie. this film is great, very similar in a lot of ways to kagemusha but much better. i thought about giving this film 5 stars but there is a loose end that wasnt tied up when the movie was over, and 5 star movies tie up their loose ends. but regardless, this is an epic film. tatsuya nakadai does an absolute wonderful job and each scene was shot beautifully. i cant believe that in akira kurosawa we had one man that could make so many incredible films. this is one of the best films i have ever seen and i can name 5 of his i liked better. there are plenty of characters in this film to root for and plenty of villians as well, great war film from fuedal japan.

The Bridge on the River Kwai 4.5 Stars
considered by many to be one of the greatest films of all time, this multiple academy award winner lives up to its hype. the best part as with all david lean films was the locations, the shots he got in the jungle scenery filled me with awe. the cinematography was also great and obi wan kenobi gave a stubborn and great performance. this is probably one of the top three or four war films of all time.

Apocalypse Now (1979,  R)
Apocalypse Now 4.0 Stars
an absolute cinema classic and a truly great war film. this is a psychological profile of life in a blood bath, and each of the actors were on their "A" game. the film gets almost too bizarre by the end, leaving me with an odd feeling about the film, but in general this is truly a phenomenal work. brando plays his character in the shadows to perfection and duval gives a great performance in a small role. one of the classics that all should see.

Das Boot (The Boat) (1981,  R)
Das Boot (The Boat) 4.0 Stars
one of the great war films of all time, this 4 hour epic is slow and dragging and the film is stronger for it. the slowness of the story is to illustrate the reality of life at sea in a u-boat. purposeful and brilliant in its delivery it was interesting to see a film from the german perspective of the war. i never caught myself symathising with nazi's, but i did sympathise with the individuals because this film does a great job of showing the plight of a soldier while never making the mistake of discussing the politics of war. everytime they looked doomed i hoped they werent, and then when they finally were doomed i was ok with it. this is an example of a director doing everything right.

simple and silly, the subtlety of this movies humor is what makes it so good. a hilarious ending when we see strageloves real alliegences as well as a glum ending add to the fun. this film made fun of things most wouldnt joke about, but it was pleasantly tasteful. good comedy.

300 (2007,  R)
300 4.0 Stars
a great film. not quite an epic, but fun to watch and directed very well. the cinematography was great and the music fit each scene perfectly. gerard butler was great, although his scottish accent was a little too noticeable at times since he was playing a greek. the history wasnt meant to be accurate obviously, but i still wish it was more accurate. most of the details were highly inaccurate in very blatant ways. i only with held a 5 star rating because the story was too simple with little character development, i could have done without the porn scenes, and some of the outlandish characters were a little silly. usually if i have this many criticisms of a movie it wouldnt get more than 3 stars, so the fact that im willing to still rate it so high should show how much i liked all of the other elements of this film that i havent criticised. worth watching for sure.

The Patriot 3.5 Stars
really good movie. a little overhyped and some of the content is questionable in terms of accuracy, but the action was very good and the family dynamic draws you into what it might have been like for families during the revolution. you really get touched by his relationship with his kids, especially his youngest daughter.

Black Book (Zwartboek) 3.5 Stars
this is a great war film and one of the best french films i have ever seen. i would have rated it an entire star higher were it not for the gratuitous smut given me on three different occasions in the film, but aside from this dissapointing element the film was brilliant. the story was flawless and well executed, the cinematography was solid, and the actors were great. a solid tale of the french resistence to nazi rule, i was gripped the entire way through. you see the characters evolve and develop so well that i cared about each of them. wonderful movie.

Platoon (1986,  R)
Platoon 3.5 Stars
one of the classic war films, this is a real and brutal portrayal of the war in vietnam. an interesting cast full of semi-stars with the exception of a few who made it huge like depp and whitaker, the ensemble cast was excellent in every regard. this film shows that war can make anyone likeable because no one wants to see anyone left as a faceless and lifeless body on a battlefield. haunting but true.

Charlie Wilson's War 3.0 Stars
i thought that this was an above average movie, definitely worth watching, but the more ive thought about it the more ive realized it should have been better. hoffman's performance was one of the best of the year and it was cool to see hanks play a character like this, but there was some vulgarity i could have done without and i felt that the story was very incomplete. when i realized that the film was less than an hour and forty minutes i felt that it could have benefited from another 20 minutes so as to give us more background. a solid film but not as "must see" as i was expecting.

Jarhead 1.0 Star
terrible, maybe even half a star. boring and pointless, shows the depravity of war rather than the glory, which doesnt make for a good film to watch. makes marines look less like heroes and more like silly high school kids. this may be realistic but that doesnt make it a good film to watch. i only gave it 1 star because jamie fox was good in this one.
