Around the World in 80 Days (1956, Unrated)
A real clunker. Seemingly more interested in being a travelogue than an adventure film, the movie is severely lacking in excitement, suspense, and enduring humor, and most of the characters grate on the nerves. In every new locale, the movie drags its feet in order to give us a fifteen-minute look at a sun-drenched landscape or an exotic circus routine, and this drudgery repeats itself for three hours that feel more like three days (which is about how long it took me to get through this plodding fiasco). The TV miniseries starring Pierce Brosnan is far superior. |

As Good As It Gets (1997, PG-13)
Good flick. I was kind of bothered, however, by the lack of sympathy and understanding Nicholson's character received from all the other characters. He has obsessive-compulsive disorder, and naturally this inhibits his ability to pursue a healthy, constructive social life. Yes, he could be a real prick at times, and no, his OCD should not be a catch-all excuse for inexcusable, offensive behavior, but nor can he be expected to function like a "normal" person. Healthy social interaction is extremely difficult for him, and that needs to be understood and accepted by anyone who would wish to be his friend. |
