The Terminal (2004,  PG-13)
The Terminal
The Terminal Summary:
Shot almost entirely on a two-and-a-half-story recreation of a full-size operating airport terminal, this romantic comedy from director Steven Spielberg revolves around an Eastern European man by the name of Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks), whose plans of immigrating to New York were hastened by a violent coup in his home country. Unfortunately, Viktor finds himself on the wrong end of a nasty technicality while en route to America: His passport was issued from a country, which, during its upheaval, ceased to exist in an official capacity. Unauthorized to leave Kennedy Airport upon his arrival and unable to return home, Viktor finds himself exiled inside the terminal's international transit lounge. Though airport official Frank Dixon (Stanley Tucci) views Viktor as an annoying bureaucratic glitch, other airport employees -- including a beautiful flight attendant by the name of Amelia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) -- come to see him as a welcome, if unofficial, addition to their numbers. As the days stretch on into months, the terminal transforms from an intimidating atmosphere of forced assimilation into a country within itself, complete with culture, ambition, status, complex diversity, and the need for love. The supporting cast includes Diego Luna, Chi McBride, Kumar Pallana, Zoe Saldana, Eddie Jones, and Jude Ciccolella.

Turner and Hooch (1989,  PG)
Turner and Hooch
Turner and Hooch Summary:
One by-product of two consecutive Oscar wins is that Tom Hanks no longer has to appear in such potboilers as Turner and Hooch. Hanks plays Turner, a meticulously groomed, excruciatingly well-organized detective working in a small California coastal town. When local "character" John McIntyre is murdered by drug smugglers, the only witness is McIntyre's slobbery, smelly mutt Hootch. You're way ahead of us, folks: Turner, who despises dogs in general and Hooch in particular, is compelled to put the cantankerous dog up as his house guest. Also easily predictable is the fact that Turner and Hooch will, by the next-to-last reel, become boon companions. To its credit, the film has an abundance of laughs and thrills...but, gee, that ending! Neither terrific nor terrible, Turner and Hooch is a pleasant time-filler; we do wish, however, that more time had been spent on the budding romance between Turner and veterinarian Emily Carson (Mare Winningham).

Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (2005,  PG)
Cheaper by the Dozen 2
Plot: Steve Martin returns as the proud patriarch of the Baker family in this sequel to the original CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, based on a book by Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth. This time, all twelve Baker kids and their parents, Tom (Martin) and Kate (Bonnie Hunt), are going on vacation, returning to their summer cabin in Wisconsin for one last hurrah before the kids grow up and go their separate ways. Lorraine (Hilary Duff) is on her way to New York to begin an internship with VOGUE, Nora (Piper Perabo) is hugely pregnant, and the Bakers want to spend some quality time all together for a change. As the family arrives at their old house, however, they realize that some things have changed?and some things never do. Tom?s old high school rival, Jimmy Murtaugh (Eugene Levy) is now the big man about town, owning much of the surrounding area, and raising his large family in a huge home across the lake from the Bakers?. The longstanding competition between the two families?or at least that of the fathers--mounts over the course of their vacation, as the two men resort to ever nastier tactics of one-upsmanship. Meanwhile, Charlie Baker (Tom Welling) becomes closer with Anne Murtaugh (Jamie King), and Sarah (Alyson Stoner) embarks on her first romance with Eliot Murtaugh (Taylor Lautner). It all comes to a head when the two families face off in a canoeing race, during which they are faced with a decision between loyalty to family and friends, and the competitive edge.

Candyman
Plot Summary:

In Chicago, Helen Lyle and her friend Bernadette Walsh are researching for their thesis about urban legend in the University of Illinois, where Helen's husband Trevor Lyle gives classes. Helen becomes obsessed by the legend of the Candyman, a son of slaves whose father became rich in 1890 after inventing a device for mass producing of shoes. The educated Candyman was an artist, but when the daughter of a powerful man got pregnant of him, her father hired some hooligans that saw off his right hand with a rusty blade, took him to an apiary with dozens of hives with hungry bees, smashed the hives and smeared honeycomb in his naked body. Candyman was stung to death by the bees, than his body was burnt in a giant pyre and the ashes scattered on Cabrini Green. Candyman stays alive in the legend that says that he would appear if his name is spoken five times in front of the mirror, and the skeptical Helen summons Candyman. Helen and Bernadette go to Cabrini Green, where two unsolved murders had happened, and the dwellers blame Candyman for the crimes. Helen's disbelief brings Candyman back; the dog of Cabrini Green's dweller Anne-Marie McCoy is slashed and her baby vanishes, and Helen is blamed. Later Candyman kills her friend Bernadette, and Helen is accused of first degree murder and arrested, while she unsuccessfully tries to prove that Candyman is the real killer.

The Ugly Duckling and Me!
Filmmakers Michael Hegner and Karsten Kiilerich offer an updated variation on Hans Christian Anderson's beloved classic in this computer animated tale of a tough-luck rodent con-artist who befriends a homely hatchling with a most unusual talent. Ratso is a traveling scammer who longs to break big in the profitable world of show business, but when Ratso ends up on a duck farm and becomes the caretaker of a distinctively large egg, he is about to find out the true meaning of friendship. As the egg cracks and a most unsightly hatchling emerges, Ratso nicknames the feathered infant "Ugly" and reluctantly finds himself assuming the role of the chick's de facto father. This isn't your average baby duckling though, because Ugly possesses a talent that audiences will no doubt flock to see. As dollar signs flash before Ratso's eyes and he schemes to make a killing by exploiting the unassuming young innocent, the unlikely pair embark on an adventure-filled journey that may just find the heartless rodent realizing that there is much more to life than making a quick buck.

After 19-year-old Timothy Hutton won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the powerful family drama Ordinary People (1980), he spent the rest of the decade and most of the '90s playing sensitive characters in offbeat, intellectually oriented films, though he also occasionally got to play villains. Hutton was primarily raised in Berkeley, CA, by his mother as she and his father, actor Jim Hutton, best known for playing Ellery Queen in the 1960s, divorced. Young Hutton gained early acting experience in high school and during a summer vacation, toured the country with his father in a road show production of +Harvey. Hutton moved to Southern California to live with his dad and break into movies. During his early years, Hutton appeared in television movies such as And Baby Makes Six (1979) and the hard-hitting Friendly Fire (1979). Robert Redford's directorial debut, Ordinary People, was Hutton's feature-film debut. In part, the realism of Hutton's wrenching portrayal of the anguished teen who blames himself for his brother's death was fueled by his grief over his father's recent death from cancer. Hutton was the youngest actor to win in the Best Supporting Actor category. Despite his early promise, Hutton remains a well-respected but not terribly high-ranking star. In part it could be a backlash from Ordinary People, for Hutton was so good at playing the tormented young man that he was relegated to playing similarly troubled youths, though he also occasionally appeared in comedies, sci fi, and other genres. Roles in Taps (1981) and Turk 182 showed that, given the chance, Hutton could indeed expand the boundries of troubled youth niche to compelling results, and though his roles in the following decade weren't always in A-list features, Hutton did impress in such high profile releases as Q & A (1990), The Dark Half (1993), French Kiss (1995) and The General's Daughter (1999). As a general ruke Hutton would frequently avoid mainstream films in favor of smaller roles as deeper characters in such offbeat fare as City of Industry (1997) and Deterrence (1999), though the new millennuim did find him stepping back into the spotlight somewhat with the release of John Sayles' Sunshine State and the Steven King adaptation Secret Window - which found him cast opposite Hollywood heavyweight Johnny Depp. Of course having appeared in the acclaimed thriller The Dark Half this wasn't Hutton's first foray into the King's twisted universe, and in 2004 Hutton would continue to keep audiences' pulses pounding with a role as a college professor who discovers a record of his murder five days before it occurs in 5 Days to Midnight (2004).
