Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008,  PG-13)
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Beautiful, breezy and carefree; this brought a little touch of Summer to my life on a cold winters night.

Good performances all round, and a very engaging storyline. Woody Allen's best in years!

Star Trek (2009,  PG-13)
Star Trek
I really enjoyed this, and how entertaining to see these young actors breathe new life into old characters. I am not a Star Trek fan by any means, but I can find few faults here. Possibly the only character I didn't like was Simon Pegg as Scotty. The character was annoying and provided unnecessary comic relief. Zachary Quinto as Spock was, I think, the star of the show for me. Spock is hot!

Looking forward to the next installment. I never thought I'd hear myself say such a thing about Star Trek!

Grey Gardens (2009,  Unrated)
Grey Gardens
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Funny, touching and moving, it is a wonderful portrait of the reclusive Bouvier Beale's. Outstanding performances from Lange and Barrymore. You can tell that Drew Barrymore put her heart and soul into this character. It's her best role in a long time.

Even if you have no background information on the family or Grey Gardens, this will hold its own, and is totally worth a watch.

X-Men Origins - Wolverine (2009,  PG-13)
X-Men Origins - Wolverine
I had marked this 'not interested' since I disliked the first two installments of the X-Men franchise. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this, and actually really enjoyed it! It's action packed, and totally over the top, but I also thought that Wolverine's origins and back story were both well-written and pretty interesting. Maybe I should check out the X-Men again and see if I feel differently about them now that I have enjoyed this so much.

2009's Blockbusters are really working out for me so far!

Adventureland (2009,  R)
Adventureland
Enjoyable coming-of-age tale set and soundtracked in the eighties. It's from the same people that brought us Superbad, so I expected a laugh out loud comedy, but, although this does have it's funny moments, it also has serious undertones. The movie is well cast, with some very interesting and highly entertaining characters. The leading role was made for Michael Cera, although from a personal point of view I'm glad another actor was cast in the part of James. Jesse Eisenberg does a good job here, as does Kristen Stewart as his love interest Em.

I Love You, Man (2009,  R)
I Love You, Man
Funny buddy movie in which the race is on for a self-confessed 'girls guy' to find a male friend who can serve as best man at his impending wedding. Lots of funny scenarios and laugh out loud moments ensue. Rudd and Segel work well together, although I must admit that Segel's character annoyed me just a little. I'm sure he's a great buddy and all, but he's definitely the type that would annoy the girlfriends among us! I have a soft spot for Rudd, so he always gets a few extra brownie points from me. The final scenes are a little soppy, but if you want a funny movie that's guaranteed to make you laugh more than a few times, go for it!

Poor Little Rich Girl: The Barbara Hutton Story (1987,  Unrated)
Poor Little Rich Girl: The Barbara Hutton Story
Pretty sure this won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I for one loved it and watched for six hours straight. Yes, really! Here, Fawcett plays Barbara Hutton, the seven-times married heiress to the Woolworth fortune, and one of the richest women in America. Believe me, it's a wild ride. The acting is pretty darn hammy in places, but life stories like this fascinate me, and so I recommend! (strange that there are no other reviews on Flixster for this).

The September Issue (2009,  PG-13)
The September Issue
The Devil Wears....Fur.....

Anna Wintour's fur obsession was the only downside to this documentary which takes us into the privileged world of fashion and provides a fascinating insight into the behind the scenes workings of Vogue magazine's famous 'September Issue'. The documentary has an interesting cast of characters, some of whom are very self-involved. This makes for some hilarious soundbites - 'September is the January in fashion' , for example, and 'the jacket is the new coat'. Amazing!

I am a big fan of fashion, so I found all of this very entertaining. The glamour and excess of the fashion shoots - Raquel Zimmerman shot by David Sims at Versailles is wonderfully glamorous - and of course, this is a unparalleled glimpse into the world of Wintour, who is capable of more than a few soundbites of her own. In one scene she states of Jennifer Garner that she 'needs to be fixed. She looks pregnant'.

As fascinating as Wintour is, for me, Creative Director Grace Coddington was the star of the show, and a refreshing contrast to the aloof Wintour. Coddington is the only person at Vogue, it seems, ready to defy Wintour, and this definitely makes for interesting watching. A must see for Fashion fans!

Gigantic (2009,  R)
Gigantic
Offbeat indie romance - this won't appeal to everyone, but I truly enjoyed it. The movie, which centers around a mattress salesman and his quest to adopt a Chinese baby, is slow-moving in parts, but laugh out loud funny in others. John Goodman offers comic relief here, while strong performances by Dano and Deschanel make this a lot more enjoyable than it might have been in less experienced hands. Deschanel, is, after all, the queen of kook. I found the characters to be very sweet and endearing, although there are some dark undertones to proceedings. Well worth a watch for fans of quirky indie.

Orphan (2009,  R)
Orphan
Props to Isabelle Fuhrman, who is great as the genuinely creepy Esther in this tense thriller. Personally, I really enjoyed it. If the movie had been in my hands, I would have made some changes to the storyline, and the ending, but overall it kept me entertained and the performances were good all round. People say that you'll never guess what Esther's secret is, but I partly did - a whole ten minutes after first seeing her. I hate when I do that! As a whole, the movie isn't very scary, but then I'm not easily scared. Esther is very sinister, though, and the movie is worth checking out for her alone. Creepy little girl......

The Damned United (2009,  R)
The Damned United
A look at Brian Clough's 44-day reign as the coach of Leeds United.

I really enjoyed this. Of course, it helps if you have an interest in football, and know the background story, but even if you don't, the movie is as much about friendship as it is about the beautiful game.

Amazing performance from Michael Sheen as Brian Clough. He has impressed me in every movie I've seen him in. Props also to Colm Meany who I thought was great as Don Revie. Well worth a watch!
