Tôkyô Sonata (Tokyo Sonata) (2009,  PG-13)
Tôkyô Sonata (Tokyo Sonata)
Sonatine: to be played rather than sung i.e the father's interview.
More meaningful as you know which member of the family is the one you are at the end = the swelling of sound which has always been following us and surrounds us. The sirens, the tones, trying to swell us over but in the end the family of Sonata(tine) has passed this time and Kurosawa Kiyoshi has stepped up with another existential masterpiece without all the horror suspense elements but replaces with climbing down ladders elements.
What Pixies wished they could have conveyed (driving).
And as always it's nice to see the man without his Z.
2
Moon (2009,  R)
Moon
What does Big Corp make of their employees? Is self?
Need
We have robots that turn into stuff and here we actually have one worth for the turning
Kevin Spacey makes good robo and good Bobby Darin

Coraline
Super 3-D
She's a peach she's a doll
Fantastico uzumaki despues the credits
Ups compared to Nightmare Before Christmas
Little girl two rows behind = "Yo tengo miedo!" to "Cool!"
4
Sunshine Cleaning (2009,  R)
Sunshine Cleaning
super sunshine in title
Probably Amy Adams coolest character. And the fact that Clifton Collins Jr. has one arm is mos def a plus for this movie. Arkin kind of shines as the old guy again (his Little Miss Sunshine grandpa was a little less shrimpy)
Mary Lynn Rajskub was a pleasant surprise. Blood is fun.

The best humor is the kind that involves blood and other bodily fluids. And maggots. So in conclusion this movie is very hilarious with of course the required amount of drama.
5
Chocolate (2008,  R)
Chocolate
super kick in eYe
6

In the Loop (2009,  Unrated)
8
Bakjwi (Thirst) (2009,  R)
Bakjwi (Thirst)
A memorable combination of the whimsical from I'm a Cyborg and the grit from Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, but still this is very much it's own film.
NOT a vampire story first
Meaning of a priest (Song Kang-ho is rule) becoming a monster?
Is this Viridiana meets Dracula?
Super score
PS Fxck you Twilight (in a few months this reference will be unneeded but for now okay)
But is Poor Girl still cute now that I've seen her *****s?

$9.99 (2008,  R)

Gake no ue no Ponyo (Ponyo) (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea) (2009,  G)
Gake no ue no Ponyo (Ponyo) (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea)
Makes the Pixar stand off between the amount of love and heart you put in a film also correlates with the time put into it. Hand drawn shall not die.
But better than mi vecinos? Kiki? Spirited Away?
Super blood.
15
The Brothers Bloom (2009,  PG-13)
16
Afghan Star (2009,  Unrated)
17
Tokyo! (2008,  Unrated)
Tokyo!
3 directors who have managed to retain their own style but make something truly Japanese.
Not only a love letter to the culture but one that is able to mention and look past the guilt.
Even though it is and should be a three way tie I will always be biased towards Bong Joon-ho.
Michel Gondry did have some wonderful sitting time and another allusion to the heart art.
Super doki.
Shimosen.
Nan desuka?
(¡La bomba eiga!)
18
Rudo y Cursi (2009,  R)
Rudo y Cursi
Super Goool!
Muy machisimo
Gracioso en camisa rosada.
Esos pinche pendejos = muy bien.
19
Taken (2009,  PG-13)
Taken
Very done type of story done in a not so done or dumb kind of way.
smoke = art
mirrors = reflections
reflective of many instances
walking up stairs
meaning...
But still the anti-action from the forward art makes the action.
Enthralling besides what my mother says.
20
Cold Souls (2009,  PG-13)
Cold Souls
Will cause comparisons to Being John Malkovich, that is not a bad thing though. Paul Giamatti takes on the challenge of being a parody of himself and is able to prod and pick at who he is not just in terms of Hollywood social standing but himself as a person. The film goes so much more into the temperatures of the Motherland and throws ambiguity left and right as does the lead of the soul extraction business.
Another entry into the evolution of sci-fi in film as something more philosophical (and leading my reviews to become more pretentious, yay).
This movie is sweet and filled with curiosity or maybe it's knowledge? I guess we'll never know.
21
Zombieland (2009,  R)
Zombieland
Truly centered in on the human condition the zombies in this film take on double meanings while the film as a whole already defies one word easy genre descriptions and is the crazy 88 of fun in a movie.
super nutting up
and big BMs
22
Where the Wild Things Are (2009,  PG)
Where the Wild Things Are
The chaos and difficulty to be centered in on a urge to build a fort. Conveys how quick someone's eye can get poked out during the fun.
super libre
