Got the Giggles
My list of favorite..well, comedies essentially. But this is more a list of crap that made me crap with laughter as well. I'm obviously a fan of Christopher Guest and crew, the Pythons, Kevin Smith, Wes Anderson, and Simon Pegg & Edgar Wright.
not gonna even try to organize this........ "list"

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975, PG)
It was suggested amongst a gathering of friends that we watch Holy Grail, and I started with just some Knights of Ni! and was soon reciting my favourite skits. Twenty minutes later, my monologue concluded with, "Yeah we've totally gotta watch it right now!". Silence and astounded looks held for several seconds until one friend said, "I think we just did." |

The Aristocrats (2005, Unrated)
not just a funny film, but an effective documentary as well, this film explores aspects of not only comedy and the comedian's life, it holds a mirror up to society and asks "what's your limit?". The DVD extras are essentially extensions to the film; plenty of interviews to make this a worthwhile rent or buy. |

Eddie Izzard - Unrepeatable (1994, Unrated)
"Unrepeatable" is one of my top Izzard shows because it's one that is better seen. The show starts with a really nice tracking shot and Izzard's facial expressions and physical comedy are matching perfect with his material. Considering this was a "one take" show, perhaps that made the difference, but that too (that it is one performance and not a sly compilation of performances) is a huge acheivement. |

Idiocracy (2005, R)
Finally a modern comedy movie that is actually funny. Mike Judge struggled to get this flick out there, and it is still vastly under-distributed, which is pretty sad considering how entertaining this movie is. I actually laughed at some bits (rarely is a straight-forward comedy effective on me), and Maya Rudolph's part is particularly memorable. This world of idiots (the great-great-...-grandchildren of those likely to have modeled their lives after Judge's Beavis & Butthead) is full of stupid in action with hilarious results. I love the terminology this world has created, the societal structure that has sprung up as well, in which one may go to a dispenser for fast food and get arrested for being an unfit mother after saying "My kids are starvin' damnit!" and the most popular celebrity is the host of "Ouch! My Balls". If you want an outright comedic bent on a dystopian future, this is it. It's Judge's "Brazil", if you will. |

Fritz the Cat (, Unrated)
According to R. Crumb (Fritz creator), he loathes this movie for its unfaithfulness to his comics. I think it's a great achievement for Bakshi, and proves that there is always art too risque to transfer to screen, even when you already plan on a smaller and specific audience. Also quite funny when intoxicated. |
