Great Film Opening Scenes
Thes films have the best opening scenes you will ever see. Sometimes so good, that the rest of the movie may fall short, but anyway here are my favorite opening scenes.

Blade (1998, R)
The one that brought a new kind of comic book hero to the screen. Wesley Snipes is awesome as Blade, a vampire hunter who is half vampire himself, wiping out each and every vampire he comes across. His main adversary is Deacon Frost, played by Stephen Dorff, who also happened to be the vampire that killed his mom while she was pregnant with Blade. So it's payback time. Lots of blood and gore and gunfire and hand to hand combat make this an extremely entertaining movie. Look for the awesome opening scene at a vampire rave club where Blade just goes ballistic. |

The Dark Knight (2008, PG-13)
Just saw Dark Knight for the second time, but on this viewing it was at an IMAX theatre. And it blew me away. It comes close to being a masterpiece. There a few little issues to talk about. But let me get to the good stuff first. Christian Bale returns as the masked hero and is solid once again. He is supported by one of the best casts in film history. Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman all return for their respective roles and are very good. Newcomers Maggie Gyllenhaal, Aaron Eckhart, and of course Heath Ledger join the mix wonderfully. The story has pyschopathic terrorist Joker (Ledger) leading a crimewave through Gotham City that Batman, Lt. Gordon (Oldman) and DA Harvey Dent (Eckhart) team up to contend with. Also they have to deal with the rival mob gangs who threaten to overrun the city. Simple enough story that takes a few twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. The action scenes are truly mind blowing, especially on IMAX. Everyone should see a movie on IMAX at least once. And you couldn't choose a better movie than Dark Knight. Ledger is simply amazing as The Joker. One of the best performances I've seen in awhile. He becomes the character so much that you really forget about him as an actor and focus on his portrayal of the Joker. The effects, music score, and look of this film are all amazing. It's truly an amazing piece of work. The only negatives would be Bale's voice as Batman. It's raspier and at times sounds comical. And I really thought Ledger could have had a few more scenes. Other than that I thought this film was one of the year's best. From the thrilling opening bank robbery scene to the final confrontation between Batman and Joker. And Dent's transformation from Gotham's white night into Two-Face. This is truly epic film-making. A must see. |

X2 (2003, PG-13)
Best comic book movie ever. Terrific sequel that improves on the original in every way. In their second movie, the team must join forces with their rival Magneto to battle a covert anti-mutant operation that targets all mutants in the world. As a die hard comic book fan, X2 hits all the right notes from the opening scene at the White House to the thrilling assault on the X-mansion, where Wolverine cuts loose against some bad guys, to the super climax where Storm turns on the cold and Jean Grey lets loose with some major firepower. Oh yeah, this movie is awesome. The entire cast is rock solid including Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, and Famke Janssen. One of my all time favorites. |

Lethal Weapon 2 (1989, R)
Actually one of the rare sequels that tops the original. Bigger action, loads of humor, great villians, and the chemistry between Mel and Danny is solid. The boys take on dirty South African diplomats that is on from the opening chase scene. And by bringing in Joe Pesci, LW2 ups the humor quotient. One of the best sequels and best action flicks ever made. |

GoldenEye (1995, PG-13)
When it was first announced Pierce would play Bond, I was like hell yeah. I've been a fan of his since the Remington Steele days. Well for his debut, Goldeneye rocks. It's my favorite Bond film of all time. It shouldn't be, but it is. Brosnan plays Bond just right-a few quips, smooth with the ladies, and rough with the bad guys. He would only get better through the years. And he has a great supporting cast. Judi Dench rules as the new M. Sean Bean and Famke Janssen make worthy villians. And Q pops up to give 007 a hard time. Goldeneye is great from the opening bungee jump off the dam to the tank chase scene through the streets of St. Petersberg, Russia. A must see and must own. |

The Terminator (1984, R)
Just watched this sci-fi classic for the first time in years and it's still great. I saw it on HDNet Movies and it looks pretty good for a 23 year old movie. Of course, you know the story by now, a cyborg is sent from the future to present day LA to kill Sarah Connor. One lone soldier is also sent back to stop it. Schwarzenegger is positively awesome as the killer cyborg. He doesn't have much dialogue but he has a commanding presence. Linda Hamilton is good as Sarah Connor and Michael Biehn kicks ass in his role as Reese, the soldier sent to protect her. Some of the makeup effects may look a little shoddy when compared to the CG films of today. But the action scenes still work. The wholesale slaughter at the police station by Arnie is slam bang in your face action, perfectly directed by James Cameron. 7 years later, the sequel put a nice new gloss on the story and wowed me again. |
