Great production design, set design, and/or costume design
Whatever flaws these movies may have, I thought they had superb, interesting, or original set design, costume design, or production design. These will be mostly period films and maybe some sci-fi. I will keeping adding to this as I'm sure there are many I'm forgetting!

Gigi (1958, G)
Many people like this film, so I must be a minority... I really like old musicals. I like Vincente Minnelli, the director. But this hardly seems worth the praise it has gotten. The creepy opening with Maurice Chevalier singing "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" just sets the tone for the rest of the movie. It's all supposed to be very charming, but it really isn't. I don't even remember the rest of the songs at all. It's a musical, for crying out loud! The only redeeming feature is the wonderful Art Nouveau set design that is sadly seen only in creepy Chevalier's apartment, and at the scenes in Maxim's. If you want to see an old musical or a movie set in France or a movie starring Leslie Caron, there are so many other options out there. I still can't believe I sat through this movie. |
