A comprehensive list of the best westerns ever made. There are still a bunch that I haven't seen. So just so you don't think I've forgotten about some of your favorites, I'm made an attempt to put them in the list, but I've place them in order of their release date after the ones that I've seen. And there are some that I don't care for either, so I'm letting you know where I stand on them too.

You have no idea how much shit I've gotten from friends and family for even seeing this movie. However, I make no apologies. It's actually a pretty good movie, even if it is incredibly overrated. It is not a landmark film, regardless of what fans say. Beautifully directed by Ang Lee, who won a deserved Best Director Oscar, and nicely photographed by Rodrigo Prieto. Heath Ledger also deserved to win Best Actor. |

Appaloosa (2008, R)
An entertaining, exciting picture from director-star Ed Harris, about a lawman and his deputy (Viggo Mortensen) who are brought in to clean up the dirty, corrupt wild west town of Appaloosa. The cast is mostly strong, with the exception of Renee Zellweger, who does nothing but smile smugly (as usual) throughout the duration of the film. Jeremy Irons is a true standout as the villainous rancher, Bragg. There are a few gaping plot holes here and there, and it drags a little in the middle, but it's well worth your time. Truly a great addition to the Western genre, right up along "3:10 to Yuma," "Open Range," and "Tombstone." |
