Guilt-Free Romantic Comedies

Due to how horrendous most romantic comedies are, the genre has acquired a really bad reputation. Here, I list some smart, original films that fall into this category. I use "romantic comedy" rather loosely in order to incorporate films that probably wouldn't be considered as such by most, but in reality are funny movies about romantic relationships - in most cases they are far from romantic (meaning sappy), which is why they are "guilt-free." Many might be considered black comedies or comedy-dramas, but all are somehow 'off.' [BTW I find it nearly impossible to number them because of my slow computer and my indecisiveness, numbers are not necessarily indicative of quality or extent to which I recommend them]

Harold and Maude
The one good thing that came of me watching "There's Something About Mary" - hearing about this film. And thank goodness. Black humor at its best.

I cannot sing Don McKellar's praises enough. He is the star and writer of this odd little movie. I've figured out that at least for things he writes and acts in, there's this great balancing act between the mundane and the absurd that is very effective. He tends to play mild-mannered guys, but with every encounter they become more and more strange and complex. Like the TV show "Twitch City." I personally love his deadpan style and he is a really good actor. In addition, of course, to being one of the most prolific film artists in Canada. He's insane and sexy and wonderful. I highly recommend this film.

Dead Alive (Braindead)
Very fun - romance, sacrilege, zombies, creepy baby, 20-minute-long-zombie killing scene. It's got it all.

Zoolander (2001,  PG-13)
Zoolander
Hysterical.
14
Shaun of the Dead (2004,  R)
Shaun of the Dead
Very clear alignment of regular people with zombies. The whole thing about zombies being well-made for the service industry is pretty brilliant.

Beetle Juice (Beetlejuice) (1988,  PG)

Kinky Boots (2006,  PG-13)
Kinky Boots
Yeah! For uplifting British comedies about working class people. And of course Chiwetel Ejiofor is marvelous. He's about as gorgeous as a woman as he is a man.

Stripes
Childhood memories, good times with family. Classic Bill Murray.
