I Rank Tim Burton...
Awhile back I was asked what movies of his I had seen; I should know, you know, me being a fan and all! I couldn't tell, so I made a list where I rank them! These are all movies I've seen that he either directed, wrote or produced.
***Note: Some of these I haven't seen in forever, or slept through so the list can easily change if I resaw them!***

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007, R)
Where to start...well it looks pretty; dank but pretty. Its shot very well and the costumes are great and I love the sets and the make-up and again the costumes. The score was loud and booming and I loved its gothic sound. The lyrics are catchy; not 'Hairspray' catchy but catchy none-the-less. Its well written and well done but certainly not perfect. There isn't anything wrong really; Johnny Depp isn't the best singer so his performance wasn't as convincing as I would have hoped but he isn't awful. Helena Bonham Carter is much better and I found her to be the strongest in the film; strongest singer, strongest actress. It isn't Tim Burton's crowning acheivment, but again his visual eye is amazing! But it just left me wanting a little more...just a little something more. |

The thing that really bothered me about this film was two-fold. First I couldn't quite get into it- which leads to the second part; the reason why. I think, and have always disliked films that are just so. What I mean is stuff happens, it seems to or at least wants to be monumental but in truth it dosen't change my life. This movie was like that- just so. It seems to make the movement towards some greater mythology, but never quite makes it. However, on the up side, the actors picked for the parts were perfect- I loved the voices. The visuals are very well done as well; I love that you can see little objects make up their world as well as themselves, I love details like that. As well maintaining a geography and a consistency is harder I think in animation and this film does it very well. As well, the music was a good fit. Overall however I think the fact the movie is just so is too overwhelming... it just dosen't go that extra step. |
