Velvet Goldmine
Warning- RATED R for a reason: nudity, bisexuality, foul language.....

Not being a fan of glam rock, Velvet Goldmine wouldn't make my top 10 lists of films revolving around music. Weird, strange, a bit out there for the conservative mindset, yet the cast kept me glued to the screen from start to finish. Will not play well for all, but if you're a fan of glam rock, you should enjoy. 3 stars for cast performance and cinematography

All The Little Animals (1999,  R)

A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999,  PG-13)
15
American Psycho (2000,  R)
American Psycho
A satire about the excesses of the yuppie generation from the 80's, this film falls short of being brilliant or must see. It is well acted and directed, filled with moments of brilliance and dark comedy, yet it does not bring out any emotional responses from me. It is an average film, one I am glad I watched, but I did not feel the 5 star rating so many have. I rate it 1/2 star above average only because Mary Harron masterfully executed some difficult material onto the screen.
16
Shaft (2000,  R)
Shaft
Three stars is probably too generous, but I did enjoy Jeffrey Wright, Christian Bale and Busta Rhymes. The film plays like a TV detective show from the 1970's and Jackson fits the character of John Shaft.
17
Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001,  R)
18
Laurel Canyon (2003,  R)

Reign of Fire (2002,  PG-13)

Equilibrium (2002,  R)
Equilibrium
An action film with intelligence... Though Equilibrium may share similarities to Matrix and 1984, it has it's own uniqueness and it is a fun film to watch. Christian Bale is extraordinaire as John Preston. The fight scenes are fantastic and the film has just enough twists. The set works perfectly for this post WW3 sci-fi film. Kurt Wimmer has created a cult classic!

The Machinist (2004,  R)
The Machinist
Scott Kossar wrote a masterpiece, Brad Anderson brought it to life on film, and Christian Bale executed the lead role perfectly. This film is a must see for lovers of the 'psychological thriller' genre. Throughout this moody and atmospheric journey of insomnia with Trevor Reznik (Bale), you just know there have to be answers at the end. This film has an ending, and oh what an ending it is! If you like twists, you will not want to miss this film.

Batman Begins (2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
Batman Begins is dark, solemn, and fantastic. Christopher Nolan shows us Batman's origins and we learn how millionaire Bruce Wayne became the Batman. For those who read the comics, it probably was no surprise. But for those who've only seen Batman movies, it was quite a ride. My understanding is the film stayed very true to the comics. For me this Batman movie is a grown-up edition. It doesn't feel like I'm watching a comic superhero come to life in a cartoonish way. Christian Bale is the perfect Batman. Gary Oldham, Michael Caine, Morgn Freeman and the remaining cast (aside from Katie Holmes) excel in their roles. There aren't many flaws to be found in Batman Begins and for me, it made Batman seem like a reality and not a character from a comic book.

The New World (2005,  PG-13)

Rescue Dawn (2007,  PG-13)
Rescue Dawn
Films based upon true stories, especially those involving POWs, really move me. Herzog has a brilliant little gem in Rescue Dawn. The outstanding cinematography by Peter Zietlinger has one feeling as though they are indeed stepping through the jungles of Laos. Bale, Zahn, and Davies awe-inspiring performances bring the POWs to life with dignity, grace, and humor. Herzog's script is just perfect. Telling the story of Dieter Dengler and his fellow POWs with very little melodrama, Herzog captures the spirit of Dieter in an impressive dramatization of survival. The score is hauntingly beautiful and molds to the film wonderfully. Herzog's script and direction are Oscar worthy. A must see film....

The Prestige (2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige
A twist of a story! Pay close attention and you may guess what's going on... Christian Bale shines as a twisted character. Hugh Jackman doesn't quite capture the vengeful side of his character, but his performance doesn't distract from the plot. Well written script, extraordinary costuming which captures the Victorian age beautifully, and a catchy plot make this film. I enjoyed this film more than the Illusionist.

3:10 to Yuma (2007,  R)
3:10 to Yuma
Disclaimer: I have not seen the original 3:10 to Yuma.

Once upon a time I enjoyed a good western. It's been a long time coming, but 3:10 to Yuma is a classic yet modern western with all the goodies. The story may not be the best scripted, but the acting, cinematography, the score, the directing, and the action are above average. Most enjoyable are the characters portrayed by Russell Crowe (Ben Wade) and Ben Foster (Charlie Prince). Wade and Prince are the 'bad' guys. Crowe and Foster shine in these roles. The hero is an odd character, but Bale portrays him perfectly for the script. The supporting cast add to the movie and do not distract. Watching this on Blu-Ray, I must say the surround sound was awesome. Overall, this may not be a must see movie, but if you ever enjoyed a good western, this one should sit well with you.

The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
Once upon a time, Batman Begins was my all time favorite Batman movie. Not anymore... Enter The Dark Knight----PHENOMENAL!!!

It is rare that a much hyped film lives up to or surpasses that hype. TDK more than equals all the hype presented months leading up to its release. With much anticipation and high expectations, this film delivered all I wanted and more.

Plot details are best left for viewing, but if you truly listen to the dialogue in TDK, you will understand that from a comic book genre film, a masterpiece has arisen. Christopher Nolan has perfected the art of putting the comic book on screen. Jonathan Nolan has written a script which knows no boundaries.

Christian Bale is Batman. Bale captures Batman/Bruce Wayne in a way no actor before him ever could. Oldham, Morgan, and Caine reprise their respective roles from Batman Begins and add great flavor to the film. Eckhart shines as Harvey Dent and Gyllenhall is a nice replacement as Rachel Dawes. The chemistry between all the actors help Nolan create a world which works beautifully.

Heath Ledger- the Joker...WOW ... mere words cannot describe what Ledger brought to this character. The level to which Ledger took the Joker is almost incomprehensible. No comparison to those who have played the role before as it would be like comparing apples to oranges. Ledger owns the Joker, and most likely no one will ever take that ownership away. Anyone would be foolish to even attempt. Ledger's performance alone is enough reason for anyone to see this film. Will he receive an Oscar nod? He should for this is one of the most brilliant roles ever portrayed on screen.

The plot, the acting, the directing, and the cinematography are blended seamlessly in TDK. The film is easily the best film of 2008 to date. The action and drama, the darkness of the film itself all make this much, much more than a comic book adaptation. This is the must see film of the decade.

Public Enemies (2009,  R)
32
Terminator Salvation (2009,  PG-13)
Terminator Salvation
A different feel than the previous Terminator films- more bleak and grim.....

Terminator Salvation is an action packed film. Introducing the resistance fighters of 2018, a world in which John Connor is an adult and trying to save his father, Kyle Reese. The film is well shot, the acting matches the characters, and the action is awesome. The story and characters aren't developed enough, but these points alone do not distract from the enjoyment of watching an action film. Aside from a couple of cheesy moments, which the film would not have suffered without, Terminator Salvation is a great new addition to the franchise. The plot does leave open a road to follow for future installments.
