The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (2005, PG)
A fantasy film with breath-taking visuals, this is an extremely well done adaptation of the novel from C.S. Lewis. A hopeful fairy tale filled with spiritual undertone complete with action, fantasy, drama, and a brilliant musical score, this film is just right for all ages. The direction, scripting and acting are above average and the film is mesmerizing and heart-warming. |

The Last King of Scotland (2006, R)
A mesmerizing film which looks at the historical events of Idi Amins' reign in Uganda - Forrest Whitaker becomes Idi Amin on the screen. You forget quickly that he's an actor playing a role. He is just Amin. Though based upon actual events the screenplay uses a fictional character to serve up its plot. James McAvoy excels as Dr. Nicholas Garrigan, personal physician to Amin. The supporting cast is in the moment as well. A brilliant screenplay brought to life on film. |

Penelope (2006, PG)
A new age fable/fairy tale which takes a reverse spin on Beauty and the Beast.... Penelope has flaws and without the cast would fall way short of obtaining a slightly above average ranking from me. With that in mind, this film is cute. It is heartwarming and humorous. Originality, cinematography, Christina Ricci and James McAvoy make this one a winner in my book. |

Becoming Jane (2007, PG)
Becoming Jane is an extraordinarily beautiful period film about the life of Jane Austin. The film has a very cinematic feel which is quite captivating in and of itself. The addition of a brilliant script, outstanding acting, and dazzling costuming makes Becoming Jane a very good film. Hathaway and McAvoy will steal your heart. |

Atonement (2007, R)
Another epic love story, albeit, this one is a bit different. Director, Joe Wright, from my understanding tried to remain true to the novel. Not having read he novel, I don't know how well he did. He may have done an excellent job and maybe that's why this film seems long and drawn out. Trying to capture different characters perspective on the same events convoluted the film in many ways. The middle of the film seems to drag the most. The ending, which is a bit surprising, helps in the redemption of the overall film. The costuming and cinematography are stunning. McAvoy and Ronan are easily the stellar performers in Atonement. For all the Oscar hype and best picture nomination, I was disappointed and expected much more. |

Wanted (2008, R)
Action...Action.... and even more Action- Wanted is an entertaining film, but it lacks substance. Most of the film is inconceivable in terms of reality and one just can't suspend belief enough to be convinced any of this could happen. The cast and special effects warrant a viewing of Wanted. Timur Bekmambetov has hit Hollywood running wide open. |
