True Believer
James Woods and Robert Downey, Jr. star and I don't know how I missed this one back in 1989. Being a huge fan of both Woods and Downey, this was a must see for me. I loved the plot, Woods & Downey did an excellent job, but i think the film itself falls a bit short against todays films. Not the best courtroom drama I've ever seen, but not the worst either. Recommended if you're a fan of either actor.

Chaplin (1992,  PG-13)
Chaplin
Robert Downey, Jr is brilliant as Charlie Chapln. Chaplin gives us the life of Charlie Chaplin in a chronological layout aided by a fictitious writer portrayed by Anthony Hopkins. Personally, I don't feel the writer helped the story move along well. Instead of being a seamless film, it seemed chopped by the addition of the writer. Overall the acting and cinematography is very well done in Chaplin. The film warrants viewing just to glimpse the man behind the comedian and the genius filmmaker Charlie Chaplin.

Only You
Not being into romantic comedies, I hadn't planned on seeing this one. Caught this on HDnet Movies and it is a very sweet romantic comedy. Robert Downey, Jr brings his own uniqueness to the film, plus Tomei and Hunt are really good. If you enjoy romantic comedies, you will not want to miss this one.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
Comic film-noir at it's best! Robert Downey, Jr and Val Kilmer are hilarious in this Shane Black dark comedy. The dialogue alone is priceless. If you like dark comedy, this is a must see!

A Scanner Darkly (2006,  R)
A Scanner Darkly
disclaimer: I am not familiar with the writings of Philip K Dick and therefore cannot compare this film to the novel.

Coherent sentences to describe A Scanner Darkly seem to be eluding me. Descriptive wording flows easily after one viewing of this film. Words such as brilliant, weird, strangely haunting, thought provoking, clever, intriguing, trippy and the list could go on and on. Bottom line being, A Scanner Darkly is a cult film which could easily be a masterpiece.

Although visually stunning, the performances of Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey, Jr., Woody Harrelson, Rory Cochrane and Winona Ryder make this film the mindboggling experience film fanatics love.

A Scanner Darkly has many depths below its surface. The view must maintain focus at all times. If you get the messages in this film, you will be blown away.

Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006,  R)
Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus
Fur is a visually stunning film which is more an imagined fiction of Diane Arbus than actual bio. This is a strange and bizarre film which managed to hold my attention from beginning to end. Robert Downey Jr once again stills the show in a film. He is the master. After the credits rolled, I couldn't say this was an enjoyable tale, but it was definitely weird.

A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006,  R)
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints
An autobiographical film from first timer Dito Montiel which is dramatic and character driven. The film offers a penetrating raw and gritty look into living life in a threatening environment, escaping that environment and what it's like to come home again. Well scripted and brilliantly acted....

Zodiac (2007,  R)
Zodiac
A film based upon actual events regarding the killer who terrorized parts of California during the late 1960's and early 1970's- The Zodiac killer... The film focus is on the detectives and newsmen, including a cartoonist who diligently tried to solve the case of the Zodiac killer. As of this day (8/5/07), the case remains unsolved.

Having done numerous research on the Zodiac myself, this film follows the history of the events very accurately. The film is well scripted and superbly directed, but it is by far the acting which takes center stage. Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards and the supporting cast literally bring the film to life. Many times I've read reviews referring to the movie as being too long, and I was surprised to find I never noticed the time during my viewing. The film never bored me and kept me enthralled in the story from beginning to end. As for some reviewers who haven't like the ending... Well, the movie did have to reach a stopping point and the crimes committed by the Zodiac are still unsolved. Personally, I liked the ending as it showed who the main detective and the cartoonist believed was the Zodiac.

Lucky You (2007,  PG-13)
Lucky You
The relationship between Huck and LC Cheever keep this film about professional poker playing from sinking. Duvall is extraordinary as usual, and although Bana seems a bit flat, the father-son battle comes off well. The romantic parts between Bana and Barrymore just do not deliver the goods. This isn't so much the fault of the actors, but more the lack of character development from the storyline. The poker playing was most enjoyable and along with the father-son relationship battle, keeps this film from being lower rated. Although I enjoyed the film, I am thankful I waited to rent rather than seeing at the theater.

Charlie Bartlett (2007,  R)
Charlie Bartlett
Highly disappointing...
Charlie Bartlett earns 2 1/2 stars simply for the talent of Robert Downey, Jr and Hope Davis. This film has one of the most poorly written scripts I've ever seen. There were moments when I thought the film was going to take off and go where comedy needs to go, but then it would just flop. Those moments always included the afore mentioned talents. Given a proper script, the film could have been stellar. It wasn't the directing, the cinematography, or the acting. Gustin Nash gets all the credit for this films failure to be funny.

Iron Man (2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
Iron Man lives up to its hype! The movie ROCKS! Robert Downey Jr. was perfectly cast as Tony Stark. The supporting cast fit their respective roles like a glove. The script is intelligent, the special effects are just enough, the character building works well, the direction is good (great cameo by Favreau), the action/fight scenes leave you wanting more and one can only hope a sequel will be forthcoming. Though I'm not a comic book fan, I'd have to say Iron Man rivals Batman Begins as the best comic book movie to date. The only thing (outside the crappy screen & sound of our local cinema) I found lacking was the score. Batman Begins does have a better score than Iron Man. The best thing about this film is that you don't have to be a fan of Iron Man comics to totally enjoy it.
