Hets (Frenzy) (Torment) (1944,  Unrated)
Hets (Frenzy) (Torment)
Very good old Swedish drama directed by Alf Sjöberg and with a screenplay by Ingmar Bergman. It was interesting to see - having been a student in Sweden - how Swedish schools have changed so much and how similar they were to Catholic schools. Big difference nowadays!
Anyway the story didn't bore me. That's always a good sign!

Det regnar på vår kärlek (It Rains on our Love) (1946,  Unrated)
Det regnar på vår kärlek (It Rains on our Love)
Beautiful love story from the 1940s and once again pretty progressive. Must have been a shocking movie for its time!
Has its funny moments as well...

Hamnstad (Port of Call) (1948,  Unrated)
Hamnstad (Port of Call)
Love story. Nothing more or less. Was neither exciting nor touching. One of the lesser movies of the great Ingmar Bergman.

Fängelse (Prison) (The Devil's Wanton) (1949,  Unrated)
Fängelse (Prison) (The Devil's Wanton)
It had a certain quality having been made in 1949 but halfway the movie I had to start all over again. The reason was the sound quality not being so good and no Swedish subtitles for the deaf were available.
The drama work of Ingmar Bergman is mentally tough. This one certainly was! I prefer his comedies!

Gycklarnas afton (Sawdust and Tinsel)(Sunset of a Clown)(The Naked Night) (1953,  Unrated)
Gycklarnas afton (Sawdust and Tinsel)(Sunset of a Clown)(The Naked Night)
Not the best movie of Ingmar Bergman I've seen but it was not too bad. The story is simple and easy to follow and has a sad undertone. Unfortunately I miss the black humour Bergman so often used in other films.

En Lektion i Kärlek (A Lesson in Love) (1954,  Unrated)
En Lektion i Kärlek (A Lesson in Love)
This must be absolutely the best Ingmar Bergman comedy I've seen so far! The entire movie made me laugh so I felt much better after I had seen it. Gunnar Björnstrand is simply the best actor Sweden has ever known. He will be missed. Eva Dahlbeck was phenomenal.
Bergman had the gift to make a real good comedy out of a drama.
Definitely worth renting!

Smultronstället (Wild Strawberries) (1957,  Unrated)
Smultronstället (Wild Strawberries)
A professor in medicine reflects upon his life before he arrives on his anniversary day in church. He keeps having awful dreams and learns a lot about the people he has known (for example his own deceased wife who betrayed him).
A real tough drama from Ingmar Bergman. Many people leaving theatre thought it was not worth seeing but I did appreciate it. It had humour in it as well! This is one of his better movies!

The Magician (Ansiktet) (The Face) (1958,  Unrated)
The Magician (Ansiktet) (The Face)
It was at least ten years ago I last saw a Bergman movie and my general impression was that his movies are so deeply depressing. So I rented this movie called Ansikte (which means The Face in English) and started watching it with some prejudices. But those disappeared after 15 minutes. The movie is really entertaining and has a funny undertone. And the end is not at all like the end I suspected from Bergman.
If you come across this movie try and see it. You'll enjoy it!

The Seventh Seal (Det Sjunde inseglet) (1957,  Unrated)
The Seventh Seal (Det Sjunde inseglet)
When I was young I would not have understood the meaning of this movie but now I am glad I can use my brain while watching this great movie.
One of Ingmar Bergman's thoughest movies, with a great performance of both Gunnar Björnstrand & Max von Sydow.
10
Djävulens öga (The Devil's Eye) (1960,  Unrated)
Djävulens öga (The Devil's Eye)
This may be one of Ingmar Bergman's greatest comedies!! Much irony and a hilarious description of hell.
Marvellous cast, as usual, and pretty progressive for its time! One of my favourites for sure!

För Att Inte Tala Om Alla Dessa Kvinnor (All These Women) (Now About These Women) (1964,  Unrated)
För Att Inte Tala Om Alla Dessa Kvinnor (All These Women) (Now About These Women)
I like Ingmar Bergman's comedies but I didn't like this one very much. Some scenes weren't necessary or too long. And I kept being irritated by not seeing the protagonist Felix (of course it was meant to be like that!)
I think the script was just to ordinary for someone like Ingmar Bergman.
12
Höstsonaten (Autumn Sonata) (1978,  R)
Höstsonaten (Autumn Sonata)
I prefer Ingmar Bergman's black comedies to his dramas. This one is particularly hard to watch, not a second of humor in it, unlike many of his other movies. Strong performances of Ingrid Bergman & Liv Ullmann though. They made me scream of irritation, both of them.
No I don't recommend this movie.
13
Fanny och Alexander (Fanny and Alexander) (1982,  R)
Fanny och Alexander (Fanny and Alexander)
This movie is not the toughest Ingmar Bergman drama I've seen, but certainly one of the slowest movies. A very small part for veteran actor Gunnar Björnstrand (no lines) but a huge role for Jarl Kulle, I think the latter made the movie! Peter Stormare is also in the movie but you can't look at him properly. Pernilla August cried a lot in this movie, it was almost pathetic.
But why all these (undeserved) Oscars?? Surely Ingmar Bergman has made better movies? His black comedies for example...
14
Den Goda Viljan (The Best Intentions) (1992,  Unrated)
Den Goda Viljan (The Best Intentions)
Bille August could have made these TV series in two parts instead of four. I have never seen such long and boring scenes, completely useless. If only I was cutting those scenes. The slowness of this real-life drama takes down the quality of the series very much. Pernilla August did some convincing acting because I wanted to slap her in the face several times, what a selfish bitch she played. And did it good.
Unfortunately way too long and therefore not worth more than 2.5 stars. Sorry Ingmar.
15
Kvinnodröm (Dreams) (Journey Into Autumn) (1955,  Unrated)
Kvinnodröm (Dreams) (Journey Into Autumn)
One of Ingmar Bergman's better movies about four women whose lives are intertwined. Bergman doesn't hide feelings and shows erotic sides of women which was a progressive step in the 50ies.
One of Bergman's "lighter" films and certainly a recommendation.
