Awakenings (1990,  PG-13)
Awakenings
Sweet & interesting medical movie. Not the Robin Williams you're used to.
2
Door to Door (2002,  Unrated)
Door to Door
I've always been a fan of William H. Macey since I saw him on the TV show ER. This movie is where he became one of my all time favorite actors. It's based on the true story of Bill Porter, a door-to-door salesman with cerebral palsy. I can see why this inspiring and positive TV movie won several awards.
3
Shine (1996,  PG-13)
Shine
This is one of my all time favorite movies! The piano playing is incredible!
4
Elling (2002,  R)
Elling
Charming Norweigan film about two men who are in a state institution and get assigned to share an apartment together.
5
A Beautiful Mind (2001,  PG-13)
A Beautiful Mind
A most amazing movie that redefined some of my misconceptions about schizophrenia.
6
My Left Foot (1989,  R)
My Left Foot
Based on the story of Irish writer Christy Brown who was born with cerebral palsy and had to learn to write using his left foot. Excellent movie but Christy's speech was difficult to understand. Subtitles would have made this a 5 star movie!
7
Ray (2004,  PG-13)
Ray
Jamie Foxx did a most excellent job portraying blind pianist, Ray Charles!!
8
Music Within (2007,  R)
Music Within
An inspiring movie that profiles the man behind the Americans With Disabilities Act.
9
Rain Man (1988,  R)
Rain Man
"Uh oh, fifteen minutes to Judge Wapner"
10
Seabiscuit (2003,  PG-13)
Seabiscuit
I'm not a horse racing fan but this was an incredibly well made movie.
11
King Gimp (1999,  Unrated)
King Gimp
I had to watch this for my diversity (sociology) class. This young man lived in Baltimore so that made it exceptionally interesting but it would have been a good movie no matter where it was filmed. The only problem I had was with his speech. It was extremely difficult to understand & I wish they had used subitiles. Otherwise, it was a very positive movie about dealing with a serious handicap.
12
The Miracle Worker (1962,  Unrated)
The Miracle Worker
This movie was made over 40 years ago but it's a true story of how blind & deaf Helen Keller learned to communicate.

The scene where she learns to associate finger spelling to objects is classic.
13
Radio (2003,  PG)
Radio
True story of a South Carolina high school football coach who mentors a mentally challanged boy. I think this was one of Cuba Gooding's finer acting roles.
14
Jack (1996,  PG-13)
Jack
This was a really cute movie.
15
I Am Sam (2002,  PG-13)
I Am Sam
I am not a fan of Sean Penn's politics but he gave a good performance here.
16
Emmanuel's Gift (2005,  G)
Emmanuel's Gift
Inspirational documentary about Emmanuel, a one legged man from Ghana, Africa. He not only overcame his own disabilities but became a champion for the disabled in his country.
