Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) (2001,  R)
Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
I have finally watched Amelie. I loved it. It was a unique film (which I always appreciate) and it was quirky and sweet. It's one of those movies you smile pretty much the entire time and as silly as you might feel, you can't wipe the grin off your face.

I'm really glad I finally saw this film. Audrey Tautou is great. I love her little grin/smirk.

Janghwa, Hongryeon (A Tale of Two Sisters) (2003,  R)
Janghwa, Hongryeon (A Tale of Two Sisters)
I had the wrong impression of this movie to begin with. It's not really horror. I would say it's more of a thriller and a drama. It's a great movie. The beginning starts out a little slow, but in the end it is all explained why. I knew I recognized Mun Geun-yeong. She is a talented young actress. Loved her in Autumn Tale. Anyway- this movie is really amazing. I understood the movie, but went to IMDB to get more details, which only made me appreciate it more. There is a lot of symbolism- so pay attention. I think this movie shows how strong hate can be and what it can do to a person. I would def. recommend this movie. Beautiful and Haunting.

I watched this movie again tonight...
It was even better the second time around, and is now a movie I own.

Apocalypto (2006,  R)
Apocalypto
I was impressed. First off, I liked that it was in Mayan. Secondly the acting cast was extremely talented, led by Rudy Youngblood who does an excellent job portraying the hero of the movie. All in all a really great movie.

Oldboy (2005,  R)
Oldboy
This movie is not for the weak of heart, mind, or stomach. I have heard a lot about this movie and realized I wanted to see it. It's a hard hitting movie.. some scenes I had to look away. It's a movie that pushes the boundaries of your mind. It's about how one choice or a few words can change people's lives. Lies, Love, and Revenge. I'm not a big gore/blood fan, but Oldboy is a lot more than a common bloody slasher film.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006,  R)
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
It's possibly the oddest film I have ever seen... and I have seen some movies that are a bit ridiculous. I guess the way you view this movie will decide whether or not you like it. The acting is excellent. The cinematography absolutely beautiful.
I haven't read the book, but I guess it stayed very true to it.

I didn't really enjoy the ending, but I didn't hate it either. It was just weird. You think a film is odd to start with and by the end you're just kind of like.... uh......? I mean I expected to be out of the norm, considering the story is about a man who kills women in order to preserve their scent.

If you like odd movies that you think about later on. Watch it. If you hate movies that make you a bit uncomfortable, skip this film.
Also, lots and lots of nudity.
But as with many films, it comes down to.... you guessed it, love.

Densha otoko (Train Man) (2005,  Unrated)
Densha otoko (Train Man)
I happened upon this Japanese movie randomly. It was cute and sweet. It's the story of a nerd trying to do his best with what he can. It tugs at the dork inside of all of us and all our insecurities. It's a movie full of hope and encourages us to break out of our shells and do more than we think possible. It's a slower paced movie, but I enjoyed it. The main character and his online friends are all likable and you find yourself cheering for all of them as they start a new chapter in their lives. If you're looking for a feel good movie- here's one.

Run Lola Run (Lola rennt) (1999,  R)
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt)
Quite the rush.
But it's much more than an adrenaline rush with its techno trance soundtrack.
Run Lola Run is about what life could be all because of a choice, a moment, what you do when that single second presents itself. What do you do? How will it change your future?
To me, that is what Run Lola Run was about. The two leads deliver, supported by a strong cast. I love how it was filmed.
It's a short movie, only 80 minutes long.
I thought it was capturing all around.

Saibogujiman kwenchana (I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK) (2006,  Unrated)
Saibogujiman kwenchana (I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK)
I have read a lot of people's reviews saying they hated it because it's not Chan Wook Park's style (He directed oldboy- the vengeance trilogy.) There are still scenes where it is evident it his style.
I myself, found nothing wrong with this movie, in fact I enjoyed it. it's mood throughout reminds me of "Eternal sunshine of the Spotless Mind." The story is about a girl who believes she is a cyborg- she believes this because of her childhood, so she is put in an institution. There she meets Rain's character and you see how their relationship develops. For me, this movie was about accepting people for their flaws and oddness. If you sit and think about it for awhile, you can relate to the characters. Their flaws and insecurities. Searching for the meaning of your existence and finally finding it. Go into this movie with an open mind and you will enjoy it. Both main characters did a great job. Rain is adorable and Lim gives a strong performance. Enjoying the protagonists of this film is easy. If you don't understand it the first time, watch it again =] Also, there are some absolutely beautiful scenes and this movie will have you smiling the entire time.

The Eye (Gin gwai) (2002,  R)
The Eye (Gin gwai)
I decided to watch the original, since I heard the new one sucked hardcore (surprise.. surprise... they casted Jessica Alba, what do you expect?)
This was a decent movie, reminiscent of "The Sixth Sense." It's not as graphic though. It's still creepy, but more than that, sad. Over all a decent movie, but it probably won't scare the crap out of you unless you are very afraid of ghosts/the super natural world, or you just plain don't like creepy movies. It was an interesting idea for a movie though. I might watch the new version... We'll see. I think parts of it were over my head because I didn't understand some of the rituals, etc, but I am planning to read into them. I'm not a big fan of horror films, but watch one on occasion.

The Color of Paradise (2000,  PG)
The Color of Paradise
This movie is really beautiful and touching. There is a scene that nearly brought me to tears.
The beginning is slow, but it's not a movie that is supposed to rush through and entertain. It's a movie that is meant to make you realize the beauty around you and to appreciate it.
The end comes extremely fast and the ending hits you hard.

Eorin shinbu (My Little Bride) (2004,  Unrated)

Water (2005,  PG-13)
Water
I really enjoyed water.
It is an extremely deep and powerful movie, which girls will probably enjoy more than boys.

But I suggest it to anyone. I really enjoyed the plot and character development.
I really liked the music as well. I am looking forward to watching the other movies in Deepa Mehta's trilogy.
17
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long) (2000,  PG-13)

Once (2007,  R)
Once
A really lovely film.
It has a very real human feel to it.
It is the movie that could really happen. To me it felt like I was watching someone's home videos instead of a film, and I mean that in a good way not a negative.

The music is absolutely gorgeous. I love it. I hope to buy the soundtrack soon. Parts of the movie I closed my eyes and just listened.

A slow paced lovely film that I definitely recommend music lovers.
It isn't a typical hollywood brodway musical either.

House of Flying Daggers (Shi mian mai fu)
Not as good as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, but Ziyi Zhang's character is more likable in this film.

As usual absolutely stunning to watch. And the choreography of the fighting was top notch as well.

Cidade de Deus, (City of God) (2003,  R)
Cidade de Deus, (City of God)
Extremely well done film.
I loved how the directors shot the movie. The cinematography was nothing short of excellent.

Along with a strong cast and moving story. This movie follows the lives of many different characters who are intertwined in their fates.

Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly)
Loved how this movie was filmed. Absolutely stunning. It's a slower movie, but it carries a heavy message.

Live life while you can because it can be taken away from you. We watch as Jean Dominique Bauby learns to live as a man trapped inside his own body. It makes him realize all that he missed while he was able bodied and how he is able to break free through his mind.

Hatsuyuki no koi: Virgin snow
A Korean Japanese Collaboration. I liked it. Predictable with a few draggy scenes, but over all it was still a sweet watchable movie. Lee Joon Ki is really endearing. Aoi Miyazaki does well too.

Fa Yeung Nin Wa (In the Mood for Love) (2001,  PG)
Fa Yeung Nin Wa (In the Mood for Love)
Kar Wai Wong makes beautiful films. Breathtaking. The filming, colors, everything A+. Love the music too.

The story is a little slow and might lose some people because it's more subtle then most movies, but I thought it was a good film.
