The Color of Paradise (2000,  PG)
The Color of Paradise
The acting was incredible and I don't recall seeing a child who is as fine actor as the boy who played Mohammed, and not for a moment did his acting ever get in the way of the story. I have not been to Iran but I could have never imagine that this place is so beautiful.

The Color of Paradise takes viewers on a journey of faith, love and creates a masterpiece of emotion that is so beautiful in its simplicity and elegance it touches one's heart. I cried almost the whole movie.
The movie does not preach and there is no need to; its richness lies in its ability to portray simple elements of nature. In places where Hollywood would have inserted blasting soundtracks, this movie simply lets nature echo in the background.

Another masterpiece by Majid Majidi. I liked Children of Heaven but this one was way better in my point of view. The acting is superb. It's natural, these are no Hollywood-stars and it's refreshing to see that. The cinematography, just like in other films from Iran, is breath-taking.
I am still speechless.

Ta'm e Guilass (Taste of Cherry) (1998,  Unrated)
Ta'm e Guilass (Taste of Cherry)
I didn't particularly enjoy this film, tending it to be kind of documentary, but it is nicely photographed and well acted.
Through the dialogue between different people from different classes, everyone has his own attitude about "life & death". I think I can't say which was right and which was wrong. The director only gives it to us and let us think for ourselves.

Every scene is simple & ordinary, but has a certain strange fascination. To be honest, I don't like these kind of movies, but as being an Iranian movie and Golden palm winner I wanted to see it. It is a good film, only you should like these movies.

Badkonake sefid (The White Balloon) (1995,  Unrated)
Badkonake sefid (The White Balloon)
It was brilliant, specially the simplicity of the movie, It is about a girl who sets out to buy a goldfish, but things happen on the way.

This is a very slow paced movie. The plot is thin in terms and it frustrated me in the beginning with distractive style. However it is quite funny on the surface.

The Cyclist (Bicycleran)(Docharkheh Savar)
I have seen some few Persian movies so far, which were good ones, but this one The Cyclist, I found it an average movie. It was very confusing about a poor Afghani man. whose wife fell sick in Iran and he had no money to pay the hospital bills. To raise money to pay the bills he undertook an endurance which he will ride a bicycle for 5 days without stopping. Some people placed some bets on his attempt and some tried to sabotage him. I never understood why. It was a movie of a man acting in desperation. Director Makhmalbaf told the story without holding back anything, but most Persian movies does this, and sometimes its captivating.

The Children of Heaven (Bacheha-Ye aseman) (1999,  PG)
The Children of Heaven (Bacheha-Ye aseman)
Two fearful children (Amir Farrokh Hashemian, Bahare Sediqi) look for a pair of missing shoes, then try to get another pair before their parents discover the loss. Zahra's shoes are lost; her older brother Ali lost them. They are poor, there are no shoes for Zahra until they come up with an idea: they will share one pair of shoes,

The two young actors are amazing, they play their sensitivity very convincing. Ali, the 9 year old brother, who really carried the film through, and the younger sister Zahra, who contributed her restrained share of screen presence. The pair is so natural: those innocent faces, the range of sad faces the two came up with! The bond between the brother and sister is so warm and joyful.

The storyline is simple. Such a good writer-director Majid Majidi is, I did not know him before this, but to come up with such a lovely story, I have no words for this. He can make chasing along a streaming gutter into an intense dramatic episode. And he doesn't have to tell it all on the screen, the little nuances and observations are enough.

It's heartening to see young children who are polite and respectful to their parents, responsible and caring in dealing with their everyday problems, and not giving up. Such quiet attitude, in spite of disappointments, such tolerance of their circumstance yet still able to find joy in little things. We catch a smile here and there, when they enjoy the soap bubbles, or when he encouraged his sister by giving her small gifts.

This is an absolute jewel of a family film. Children's emotions, adults are not left out, the parents, the elderly couple next door, the shop-owners, all made this movie very real.

What impressed me so much is the dialogue, which was complete in Farsi, it's sounds so beautiful, I had English subtitles, but still it sounds so melodious in my ears.

Zamani barayé masti asbha (A Time for Drunken Horses)(Intoxication for Horses) (2000,  Unrated)
Zamani barayé masti asbha (A Time for Drunken Horses)(Intoxication for Horses)
This is one more powerful and deeply affecting films coming from Iran. Using non-professional actors from the region, Ghobadi is able to lay bare the devastating hardships of life in Kurdistan on the Iran-Iraq border. The children are what make this film, though. In particular, Madi, the handicapped brother, has an incredibly expressive face. Also, the 12 year old head of the family, Ayoub, shows his love and dedication to his family of brother and sisters in each scene.

Powerful film and yet another indication that some of the world's best films are coming out of Iran these days.

Shah-re ziba (The Beautiful City) (2004,  Unrated)
Shah-re ziba (The Beautiful City)
At first, the film's set-up was primitive, and there seems to be no importance on the crime itself. The lead characters all claim that their friend, a murderer, "doesn't deserve to die", but this was never proved, why. But as the film proceeds, it becomes clear that this is not the point: instead we see how the final verdict was put in the hands of the dead girl's father,.The Killer fate is passed now onto those, the father and also those who must plead with him for clemency. The father who still could not deal with his grief. The film's represented also the role of women in an Islamic society, which was also sensitive and interesting to see. The abrupt ending concludes a quiet tragedy that delivers more than is promised at the start.
Thank you my friend for this good movie recommendation, most movies of Iran showed till now, not to be disappointed.
