Tim Burton's Corpse Bride (2005,  PG)
Tim Burton's Corpse Bride
?A tragic tale of romance? passion? and a murder most foul!? Corpse Bride has to be one of my all time favorite movies. Everything about it is flawless and dazzling. The imagery, puppets, animation, cinematography, score, style, acting and most of all the story is all amazing. It?s such a dark, sensitive, romance that is at the same time a very satirical black comedy. I?ve probably watched it over twenty times now and it hasn?t gotten old at all. Tim Burton?s original works tend to be his best in my opinion. Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Corpse Bride all seem to be a lot more original throughout as well as more personal in their telling than his adaptations. Emily, the corpse bride, is one of the most fully realized and easily sympathized characters I?ve ever seen. You can?t NOT feel sorry for her. One of the other marvelous things about the story is that you can?t choose an outcome that will truly be satisfying for all the characters. It is a love triangle in which no one is in the wrong. We can sympathize with Victor and Victoria but at the same time Emily is really getting some hard knocks. The ending and resolution really is great though. The first time I watched it I had no inclination towards how it would end. The closing shot is just beautiful. I do not usually like comedic movies that much. The exceptions being Little Miss Sunshine, Juno, Stardust and a few select others. Corpse Bride really works as a comedy though. Its such a satire of the Victorian age and narrow-minded bigotry you can?t help enjoying it. Even the fact that its animated doesn?t detract from the story in any way. Corpse Bride is visually dazzling, flawlessly engineered, and compelling story wise. Definitely one of the greatest movies ever made.

From Hell (2001,  R)
From Hell
Really good. Kind of reminded me of Sleepy Hollow or Sweeney Todd, only its a bit more historical looking and not at stylish. Plus Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta) wrote it so you have to love it. It wasn't as graphic as i was expecting either....

Benny & Joon (1993,  PG)
Benny & Joon
Overall this really was pretty clever and extraordinary. It just seemed bogged down by something though, and i really cannot identify what. It would have been better if it would have focused more on Sam and Joon, and a bit less on Benny. Still, its a cute, fun movie.
