Little Children (2006,  R)
Little Children 4.5 Stars
Todd Field's Little Children's screenplay was written in collaboration with Tom Perrotta, on whose novel it's based. Starring Kate Winslet, Patrick Wilson and Jennifer Connely this films explored the problems that accur within American Surbrian life.

Little Children is one of the oscar contenders which I hope will get something for it Perhaps for the brilliant screenplay which it was based it. This seemed to really embrass the chosen topic of the film and really made me feel that what i was watching was worth the while. . This idea is brilliantly portrayed through characters - while categorized as "adults" - have yet to outgrow certain adolescent stages. For instance Patrick Wilson's character watches skatboarders at the park, remissinging over his teens when he regularly played just before his mum died.

The story : it shifts from scene to scene exposing the triviality of day to day life. Yet there is that haunting sound of an approaching train. Are we witnessing a train wreck? The brilliant use of a narrator lulls us into the belief that this is just a children's story and nothing bad will happen. Yet our eyes are glued to the screen as we await the crash. Plus we are able to delve into each characters minds which we might no have been able to do without the narration-only through facial expressions and dialogue for instance.

There are some fine performances in this film. Kate Winslet is on top-form brilliantly playing the character of Sarah Pierce, Patrick Wilson also plays the househusband very well and is an underated actor, Earl haley plays the paedophile brilliantly well and derves that oscar nomination. What was good about the film was well is that the two supporting actors ie Sarah and Brad's spuses were underused, so imeadiatly we focus on the two leads and their emotions.

Certainly I feel there is evidence of complete realism of surbian American life here, felt very like American Beauty, which explored similar themes. Seeing the padeophile's point of view as well with his mother really does evaluate your ideas and expectations of other people.

I can't recomend this enough. I hope it gets the best screenplay no at this years oscars!

Saw it several times when i was young. I would watch it again because I never get tired of seeing it. What makes the film so good is Kate Winslet's performace, she's far better than Leonardo Dicaprio and his greasey hairi ugrh! Plus it was one of the very 1st films that I cried at.
