1902-1926 years in film
A new perceptive eye was truly opened in 1895 when the Lumiere brothers unveiled their first motion picture footage. The pre sound era particularly captivates me because of the pure visual poetry it allowed. Impeccable visual storytelling. No audible narrative exposition coming between the image and the viewer's mind. A lot of these early films are just amazing unfiltered expression. If you miss every silent movie ever made between the years of 1902-1927, please DON'T miss these! Treat yourself to witnessing the remarkable few films that I feel begin our collective history as a species on celluloid. These lists are excerpts from a book that I've been editing since 1999 titled THE REFINED AND UNCOMPROMISING PICTURE SHOW. The project began as a defiant protest against the AMPAS and all of the poor choices I feel that establishment has made awarding and nominating films throughout the years. Now it's just sort of become a compulsive thing I do at the end of every year to try and express what I feel the best films were. Obviously not all of these films are for everyone, but I promise if you true film junkies sit through most of them, you might take somethin away. Just a few rental ideas, if you haven't already seen them. If any of your favorite films are missing, let me know, I have a thousand blindspots. I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on these or read your own Top 10 lists.
