1
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974,  R)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Very disturbing, see the original, folks, not the remake. Very gritty, dirty feel. This film is remembered as one of the absolute goriest films ever, but this is a perfect example of what you don't see is more terrifying than what you do. Gunnar Hansen is the ONLY Leatherface to be taken seriously..
2
Re-Animator (1985,  R)
Re-Animator
I could make head jokes until I want to vomit, but it all seriousness, this is by far one of my favorite horror movies. It's a marvelous take on the zombie ideaolgy, aided by the fantastic short story by H.P. Lovecraft. Mind you, this movie is a far cry from that story, but not in a bad way. Jeffrey Combs is absolutely wonderful as Dr. Herbert West (mild crush? I think so.), and by far the standout of this movie. There's a degree of morbid humor layered in this movie, which is always good to have. The rest? All for the gorehounds.
3
The Omen (1976,  R)
The Omen
Don't name your kid Damien.
4
Zombieland (2009,  R)
Zombieland
There a lot of people comparing this flick to Shaun of the Dead -- which it's not. Shaun of the Dead is a romantic comedy ... with zombies. Zombieland is most definitely a zombie-comedy, and a stylish one at that.Matthew Gray Gubler/Woody Allen mash-up Jesse Eisenberg plays Columbus, a phobic teen traveling through Zombieland in search of some semblance of family, alive only because of the strict set of survival rules he has set up for himself. The rules are integrated rather cleverly throughout that film, giving more edge to the visual stylings of the fick. Woody Harrelson, a badass by trade as Tallahassee, joins him, along with a pair of con-master siblings, Wichita and Little Rock. All in all, a very very enjoyable flick with as much heart as there is entrails.

Oh, and goddamn Bill Murray!
5
Friday the 13th (1980,  R)
Friday the 13th
AWESOME. A great slasher with an unforgettable ending, and the start of a seemingly endless slew of sequels. One of the most obvious standouts in the slasher genre.
6
Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981,  R)
Friday the 13th Part 2
I'm still not sure why I love this movie.
7
A Nightmare on Elm Street 5 - The Dream Child (1989,  R)
A Nightmare on Elm Street 5 - The Dream Child
A nice switch-up from the usual pace of these flicks, I thought Dream Child had a pretty cool concept going. As always it has amazing special effects, and the dream element is VERY prevalent in this flick. It's a very surreal film.

This one automatically gets a higher rating for having more interesting characters -- and by characters, I mean the comic book guy Mark.
8
Freddy vs. Jason (2003,  R)
Freddy vs. Jason
Made me laugh. Pretty good. Guilty pleasure, but good.
9
Alien (1979,  R)
Alien
Awesome sci-fi thriller, completely mind-blowing when you first see it.
10
Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982,  R)
Friday the 13th Part 3
Why do I love these movies so much? I desperately wish that I could have seen this with some 3D glasses. Half the fun of this movie is all the gags they wrote into the flick. The other half of the fun? The hockey mask. Jason actually becomes Jason in this movie. I also love the homage (edging on "rip off") of the original movie, involving a leech-infested Pamela Vorhees. Time hasn't been too kind to her.
11
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007,  R)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
I adore the musical and I adore the concept of Tim Burton taking it that much more. Sondheim adaptions tend to be good, don't they?

Johnny Depp is amazing as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and the entire movie is incredibly engaging. Tim Burton indeed 'went there' with this movie, and the throat slashings are plenty!

Who knew Alan Rickman could sing?
12
Zombi 2 (Zombie) (Zombie Flesh Eaters) (Zombie 2: The Dead are Among Us)(Island of the Flesh-Eaters) (1980,  R)
Zombi 2 (Zombie) (Zombie Flesh Eaters) (Zombie 2: The Dead are Among Us)(Island of the Flesh-Eaters)
Relentless Italian horror film, with a very memorable eye-gouging scene.
13
Drag Me to Hell (2009,  PG-13)
Drag Me to Hell
Yes yes yes yes. Raimi's recognizable over-the-top scares and peculiar sense of humor are both present again after what seems like AGES without. Drag Me To Hell is such a ridiculously entertaining flick, I can't recommend it enough.
14
[Rec] (2007,  R)
[Rec]
In a similar vein to Blair Witch and Cloverfield, this entire movie is shown through a handheld camera, run by one of the central characters in the film. The story begins as the filming of a television show featuring some firemen, but as the crew of two follow them to investigate a woman trapped in her room, it becomes far more sinister.

Although it's true that there is no character development, this is actually something that enhances the film. As you're watching [REC], you're thrust into the midst of this situation just the same as the two main protagonists, and are faced with all the horrors exactly as they are. You're not given time to identify with anyone or anything, which makes for a very frightening atmosphere of unfamiliarity.

Great pacing, amazing acting, and incredibly unique. Pretty unsettling film, and one of the best I've seen in a long time.
15
The Gore-Gore Girls (1972,  R)
The Gore-Gore Girls
The most relentless film of Lewis' I've seen. The gore is vibrant, it's squishy, and it's plentiful. There's as much go-go as there is gore in this flick, so there's little room left for plot, but, that doesn't matter. It's super kitschy and thus super-great.
16
Trick 'r Treat (2008,  R)
Trick 'r Treat
Absolutely phenomenal. This movie has been talked up a lot in film blogs and so I was completely expecting to be totally disappointed, but, alas, my jaded self was kept at bay. I laughed, I was chilled, and then I laughed some more. Such an enjoyable flick and is most definitely in my permanent Halloween rotation now.
17
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! (1978,  PG)
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!
Ridiculously funny flick, on par with Airplane and the likes. And what a catchy theme song!

"Technically, sir, tomatoes are fags."
"He means fruits."
18
Saw IV (2007,  R)
Saw IV
Tobin Bell was pretty good.

Otherwise, though ... take a breath, Saw IV. Just take a breath and collect yourself.
19
Slither (2006,  R)
Slither
This is one of the better new horror movies I've seen recently. Enough homages to make me giggle, and.. Michael Rooker!
20
Dead Alive (Braindead) (1993,  R)
Dead Alive (Braindead)
Hysterical zombie-comedy. See what Peter Jackson was up to before he was making the Lord of the Rings. Very quotable. "This calls for some DEVINE INTERVENTION!"
21
House of 1000 Corpses (2003,  R)
House of 1000 Corpses
I loved it. Screw you. That said, I love the over homage to the cheeseball 70s horror films in general, not to mention some GREAT baddies. Capt Spaulding, anyone?
22
The Devil's Rejects (2005,  R)
The Devil's Rejects
I love you, Mr. Rob Zombie. A very gritty, dirty, raw horror movie that harkens back to the old TCM, only this movie leaves a LOT less up to the imagination.
23
Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf (1991,  Unrated)
Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf
These early Scooby movies are fantastic. Reluctant Werewolf is one of my favorites. I don't care who you are, Scooby-Doo is always fun to watch.
24
The Exorcist (1973,  R)
The Exorcist
See the 'Version You've Never Seen' and have a friend around to scream at. Very chilling.
25
The Thing (1982,  R)
The Thing
Great, if not underrated, horror movie. Remake of a classic 50's sci-fi thriller turned into pure horror.
26
Dawn of the Dead (2004,  R)
Dawn of the Dead
Surprisingly, it didn't suck that bad! It can't hold a candle to the original, but it's still a lot better than some of the crap that's out now.

I'm not dead-set against remakes (just bad ones), and even though I was wary of it, I ended up enjoying this flick nontheless.
27
Black Sheep (2006,  Unrated)
Black Sheep
Okay, mutant sheep attack some kiwis. There's no need to sell this movie any more than that.
28
Ginger Snaps (2001,  R)
Ginger Snaps
An original look on werewolves. Definatly worth your time.
29
Mars Attacks! (1996,  PG-13)
Mars Attacks!
This movie used to scare me, but I think it's fantastic now.
30
The Blair Witch Project (1999,  R)
The Blair Witch Project
If it tricked that many people into thinking it's real, there's got to be something to it, right? I liked it.
31
I Am Legend (2007,  PG-13)
I Am Legend
I'm quick to admire any film which can set up a believable atmosphere and maintain it -- involving you in the 'world' of the movie throughout the course of the film. I Am Legend maintains this post-apocalyptic, desolate and isolated atmosphere which is only broken up briefly in the narrative by the appearance of our vampire/zombie antagonists and other protagonists wonderfully. As you watch Will Smith's character go about his daily routine, his situation becomes almost palpable. The story itself is very entertaining and an excellent revisit to this oft-used concept, and, particular story.
32
Blood Car (2007,  Unrated)
Blood Car
Silly and hilarious and bloody and violent and irreverent and wonderful.
33
Pumpkinhead (1988,  R)
Pumpkinhead
Very groovy creature effects on Pumpkinhead, and an overall good moody atmosphere for the backwoods tale of revenge and.. a uh, a big ugly thing.
34
Tourist Trap (1979,  R)
Tourist Trap
This could be one of the best things I have ever seen. Ever.
35
The Unseen (1981,  Unrated)
The Unseen
Cheswick from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest plays a complete bastardly creep in The Unseen. This movie has such a stand-up-and-cheer finale, but actually ends on something of a somber note. All the same, the flick is fun, if not a little silly, and definitely worth a kitschy viewing.
36
Necromentia (2009,  Unrated)
Necromentia
What just happened to me? What did I just witness?
37
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996,  R)
From Dusk Till Dawn
Quentin Tarantino, guns, crime, grit, violence, dark humor, vampires, and more one-liners than you could hope for.

Absolutely fantastic movie. It's just cool up and down.

Did I mention I have a crush on Quentin Tarantino? I do.
38
Ravenous (1999,  R)
Ravenous
I had never even heard of this film until it was recommended to me by a friend. It's a very decent flick, kind of a horror ilte with some black comedy thrown in for good measure. Great ride, fun flick.

"If you die first, I'm definitely going to eat you."
39
Martyrs (2008,  R)
Martyrs
This was hyped a lot for me and was ultimately a bit of a letdown in that regard. It is ultraviolent and the plot is interesting if you give yourself a chance to understand what the hell is going on. Cool effects, visually the film is both brutal and beautiful. Worth a watch.
40
Hellraiser (1987,  R)
Hellraiser
Clive Barker is insane, but that's cool, because this movie is great. S&M fans found their killers in the deadites.
41
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) (1920,  Unrated)
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari)
Visually stunning and ahead of its time -- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is an excellent example of early screen horror and strange German expressionism.
42
Paranormal Activity (2009,  R)
Paranormal Activity
I well-presented cinema verite ghost story, but not much more. I failed to see what all the hype (read: overhype) was about regarding this movie. There are some spooky moments and it is, on the whole, believable and it does work well as a movie -- but it's not sensational by any means. Worth watching, but also worth knocking off its pedestal.
43
Diary of the Dead (2007,  R)
Diary of the Dead
Not as terrible as its cracked up to be at all. I think this movie gets an extra star and a half tacked on for the Amish gentleman Samuel alone. Oh, yes.
44
Halloween (1978,  R)
Halloween
Classic! And even though some of the sequels left a bad taste in my mouth, I still love the original.
45
Shaun of the Dead (2004,  R)
Shaun of the Dead
A romantic comedy. (With zombies)

How does that NOT grab you? Absolutely quotable, rewatchable, hilarious film. One of my favorites.

Also, I adore Simon Pegg.
46
Friday the 13th - The Final Chapter (1984,  R)
Friday the 13th - The Final Chapter
A lot of people regard this as their favorite of the series, and I'm in no place to argue. It's great to see Crispin Glover in this flick, partly because I have some bizarre crush on him, and partly because he's not playing a slick-haired creepy guy. Also, check out Corey Feldman!
47
The Shining (1980,  R)
The Shining
Awesome movie, one of the few that has ever creeped me out. WHAT IS THAT MAN DOING IN A DOG SUIT!? Eesh.
