Return to Paradise (1998, R)
Vince Vaughan taking on a more dramatic role, came close to pulling it off although I found it hard to take him seriously. This film is about whether 2 friends will go back to Malaysia to save their friend's life who is set to be hung for possessing drugs that they all were responsible for. If they go back, they save him, yet have to spend 3 years each in a Malaysian prison. That said, Joaquin Phoenix turns in a very strong, believable, frightening performance. Fantastic film - unbelievablely sad - you just hate the media for what they did at the end. Left me thinking about Lewis after the film. Definitely worth a look. |

Turistas (Paradise Lost) (2006, R)
Paradise Lost was closely compared to Eli Roths Hostel, as its main story line is based around the disappearances of holiday makers, and their bloody fates at the hands of local criminals who sell there internal organs to rich business men. However unlike Hostel this film has less gore, less suspense, and not as shocking. The plot though predictable is passable, but let down by chronic xenophobia, holes, weak and inconsistent characters and a poor conclusion. |
