Lucio Fulci

Fulci really made his mark on Italian giallos and horror in the 70's and early 80's. Although his career took a nose dive in the late 80's and early 90's, films like Zombie and Dont Torture a Duckling will always be there to remind us of his genius.

A Lizard in a Woman's Skin (Una Lucertola con la pelle di donna)
Fulci is best known for his "splatter' Films of the 80's. Yet some of his best work is in the Giallo genre. A Lizard in a Womans skin is more dreamy and nightmarish than linear. Giving it a unique touch that seperates it from other entries in the Giallo family. An aquirred taste but worth the look for those who love Italian murder mysteries.

Non si sevizia un paperino (Don't Torture a Duckling)(Don't Torture Donald Duck)
Fulci reputation lies in his gore soaked films of the 80's but his time spent in the giallo area in the late 60's and 70's is perhaps his finest works. Dont Torture a Duckling is one of the best films on his resume'. A haunting story of a killer prowling on the young is very powerful. And the elment of sleaze is with all giallo films very present. If i recall its Florinda Bolkan who pays a certain price at the hands of angry villagers in one of the most brutal sequences ever. A sequence he visits again at the begininng of The Beyond. Top notch and exellent in all aspects. And the climax is wery painfull to watch!

Sette note in nero (Murder to the Tune of the Seven Black Notes)(The Psychic)
Although this is not Fulci's best Giallo, it is a pretty decent one. It starts out with a bang..literally as a woman commits suicide by throwing herself off of a rocky seaside cliff. Fulci's closeups of the womans face being smashed against the rocks are fun and brutal...even if the head looks like it came from a Sears mannequin! He also did this in Dont Torture a Duckling.....even better.
I was initally bothered by the first 3/4ths of the film with its constant psychic visions and no real "action" But the last 4th of the film showed me the error of my ways by proving there was reason for this methodical pacing. Fulci wraps it up nicely and delivers a standout Giallo.

Zombi 2 (Zombie) (Zombie Flesh Eaters) (Zombie 2: The Dead are Among Us)(Island of the Flesh-Eaters)
"We are going to eat you!" fitting tagline to one of the greatest zombie films ever made! Gianetto De Rossi creates the scariest looking Zombies to ever stumble across the screen.

Fulcis crime film is also one of his most brutal films. There are alot of sadistic killing here! One scene in particular warrents a nod involving a pretty womans face and a Bunson Burner!! Fucking creul.
Genre fav. Fabio Testi rules in his usual way! And that Fabio Frizzi score is super cool! I cant wait to track that down and add it to my film music collection.

The House By The Cemetery (Quella villa accanto al cimitero)
Almost as good as The Beyond in terms of Mood and atmosphere. And its pretty thick here. Greusome effects by De Rossi. Horrible dubbing almost kills it. ANd i usually dont hold dubbing against a film but my god its torture listening to the fuck who dubbed the kid.

Lo Squartatore di New York (The New York Ripper)
Fulci's gory return to Giallo. His sleaziest film! Features a killler who talks like Donald Duck. Besides being his sleaziest film this could also very well be his goriest.

Paura nella cittą dei morti viventi (City Of The Living Dead) (The Gates of Hell)
Great Fulci flicks. The always twisted Giovanni Lombardo Radice aka John Morgen has one of the coolest deaths ever put on film. Other highlight include a girl vomiting her organs up. Incredible synth score by Fabio Frizzi. One of my favorite Fulci films. But one question; why are there jungle sounds in this New England based film!?

I Quattro dell'apocalisse (Four of the Apocalypse)
A bit of a mixed bag with this one. Its a damn good movie thats bogged down by one of the worst spaghetti western scores ive ever heard in my life. And its composed by three rather competant fellows, Fabio Frizzi, Franco Bixio and Vince Tempera. Its rather 70's rock-folk in a bad way. There are some cool orchestral pieces but the sung songs really annoy!
This ones got a great cast with Fabio Testi, Tomas Milian and the very underrated genius of Michael J Pollard. Pollard i felt was underused and so was Milian's character. Milian says he was cast to cash in on his name. Although his role is great and he does sadistic almost too well. He has some of his finest moments here when playing off of Pollard.
Fulci is an amazing director and this film is full of trademark Fulci style thanks in part to cinematographer, and Fulci regular, Sergio Salvati. From the soft interior lighting to the close up shots.
This is a pretty surreal film for Fulci.. It seems he could not make up his mind were he wanted this one to go atmospherically. The last act stalls and looses pace when we spend waay too much time in snowbound mining town were there is no woman in sight and the men like it that way. The last 7 minutes make up for it though.
