There was a few things that initially drew me to this film. The first being my on going interest in anything related to Michael Pitt. He's one of those actors that has so much going for him. He is unbelievably talented but every film I see him in, it just never really lives up. This film is just another example. His performance was brief as he isn't a major character, which I wasn't really expecting. However, his talent is clearly visible. His chemistry with the other actors is also very good and he plays the young guy really well. His character gives the impression that he's not really that intelligent and doesn't seem to be going anywhere with his life. By the end of the film, your impression of his character has definatly changed. He proves he's capable of more than people think. It's just a shame it's not really a positive thing that comes out of it. The star of the film however, has to be Brad Renfro. Who sadly died a couple of years ago. His death was slightly over shadowed by that of Heath Ledger, but Renfro's death was just as tragic and such a waste of talent. His character is essentially the one the events transpire around. It is he who has been abused by his friend for many years. And he who is convinced by his girlfriend that it's time someone put a stop to it. In the beginning he's shown to be quite a weak person who just won't stand up for himself. You'd expect this to switch by the end of the film, but it doesn't. He is just shown to be a weak person who went along with a group of so called friends. He was their reason for doing what they did. It's not a murder I was aware of before watching the film, probably because i'm not American. It's a tragic story that really challenges you. On one hand, these kids committed a horrible crime. But on the other they were constantly tormented by this boy. It's hard to justify what they did but the film also makes you understand why they did it, even if you don't agree with it in the end.
This reinvention of the Loepold and Loeb murders is actually pretty good. I was expecting it to be rather predictable and slightly unbelievable but it was actually not bad. The plot was good and thriller. Kept me interested right up until the very end. I like the ending of Sandra Bullock's character. Ryan Gosling did an excellent job. I really respect him as an actor now after watching a few of his movies and his performance in this film just proved my theory that he shouldn't be underestimated. Michael Pitt did a brilliant job as well. The two character balanced each other out perfectly. Didn't really get to see much of Chris Penn which was a shame because I was looking forward to seeing him. Overall and entertaining film.
Really odd film that i'm still not completely sure about. Most of the way through it borders on soft core porn and art. I think that Bernardo Bertolucci manages to keep it just on that line and no more. I must say that the film is very French. Still, when you get beyond those outrageous sex scenes it is a very good film. Michael Pitt is amazing as always as the awkward American. The chemistry between the three characters is very important to the essence of the film and they all did an excellent job with it. I can understand why people would not like this film. The average Flixster rating being about two and a half stars at the moment which I see as completely unfair as even if you didn't like it, it is by no means that bad. This film comes down to taste so I don't think no matter how many reviews you read on the film, they are all going to have different views on it so you should just watch it and make up your own mind.
Well, the reason I watched this film was purely because it had Winona Ryder in it. You can probably imagine how I felt by the end of it without even seeing so much as her face never mind any type of performance from her. Apparently (according to IMDb) she plays a psychologist. As much as this film really needs one, I didn't see one at all. This film as pretty warped, the plot is decent but some scenes are just plain weird and don't seem to fit much at all. To be honest there are more bad things I could say about this than there are good. Most of the performances were good. I think it all boiled down to the odd scene not fitting. Perhaps worth at least one watch and I'd love to hear peoples opinions on it. Maybe they can explian the scene they know i'm talking about. It really needs no introduction and when you watch it you'll know exactly what i'm on about.
Compared to the rest of Keira Knightley's and Micheal Pitt's films this was dreadful. It was awfuly boring and really hard to stay interested. I mainly wanted to see it because of Keira Knightley and because of all the stunning films she has been in recently. Unfortunatly this film cannot be in that list. I cannot understand why she didn't use her normal accent either. They were meant to be French but there were no French accent. Her voice just didn't sound as pretty as it does with the English accent. She was also hardly in it at all and that was just the beginning of this films problems. Michael Pitt's performance was poor and unconvincing. The other actors are not worth commenting on. I wouldn't recommend this film at all. I was curious but I wish I hadn't been.
As much as I love Michael Haneke and the rest of the actors involved I cannot bring myself to like this film. I watched the original last year before even knowing they were re-making it and it thought it was excellent. I cannot understand why they would take a near perfect film and remake it exactly the way it was but with American actors. I can only feel that the whole point of it was so that lazy people who only speak one language don't have to bother reading the subtitles on the real film. It's just bollocks. They didn't change one this in this film. To be quite honest with you I couldn't even make it to the end of this film. I couldn't understand why I should. If everything is exactly the same then what's the point. I love Michael Pitt, and I think Tim Roth and Naomi Watts are brilliant but they could just never live up to the ground breaking performances from the original actors. Do not watch this film, don't be one of the lazy millions, watch the original, read the subtitles.
