Britain has produced many great directors and along with Shane Meadows and Chris Nolan, Micheal Winterbottom is the best of contemporary times, producing diverse but always excellent films that are both fiction or documentary.

Wonderland (1999, R)
one of micheal winterbottoms earlier films. a kind of london based magnolia that is sadly underrated and seen by hardly anyone. it tells the sepearate stories of each member of a diysfunctional family over the space of two or three days and how they link together. its a film about real life and real people and provides an honest look at life on just how empty and lonely we are, but also shows the happy times too and that above all life is never straight foward. great music by micheal nyman in which each character has their own piece of music. |

A Mighty Heart (2007, R)
once again micheal winterbottom comes up trumps. despite being produced brad pitt and hollywood he has lost none of his gritty and realist style. just like his other efforts of a similar nature (in this world, welcome to sarejevo and road to gunatanamo) he combines real news footage, on location shooting and a realist style with hand held cameras and fast editing to produce another compelling, tense and topical stroy that takes you straight to the heart of the action and makes you think. anjelina jolie also gives her best performance for ages. |
