For Your Height Only (For Y'ur Height Only) (1979,  R)
For Your Height Only (For Y'ur Height Only)
Weng Weng was robbed by that stinkin' Daniel Craig. Just watch one of the many clips on YouTube (or better yet, rent or buy this masterpiece) and tell me Weng Weng doesn't run circles around Mr. Craig in terms of acting and action. Phooey on you "Hollyweird" for choosing Daniel "Crapmeister" Craig over Weng "Weng" Weng. Also watch the great Challenge of the Tiger also included on the Mondo Macabro DVD.

Tarkan Viking kani (Tarkan and the Blood of the Vikings) (Tarkan versus the Vikings) (1971,  Unrated)
Tarkan Viking kani (Tarkan and the Blood of the Vikings) (Tarkan versus the Vikings)
Watch in amazement as Tarkan and his dog.... I mean wolf named Kurt take on vikings, octopus and sanity! One of my all time fave schlock films. Extreme, yet hilarious violence, wooden, yet amazing dialogue and action right out of a comic book... a comic book written by maniacs! Turkish maniacs! Please Mondo Macabro, poor DVD sales or not, please, please, please keep the Turkish Pop Cinema Classics coming!

Pembalasan ratu pantai selatan (Lady Terminator) (Nasty Hunter) (Shooting Star)
Another great release from Mondo Macabro. If only Casablanca was more like this, I would've enjoyed it so much more.

Zibahkhana (Hell's Ground) (2007,  Unrated)
Zibahkhana (Hell's Ground)
Finally got to see my most anticipated film, and boy was I not disappointed. Tombs and Khan create a fun film that harkens back to American horror of yore, and yet portrays Pakistan perfectly. The atmosphere in this one is what makes it a film I will be returning to again and again. I don't know why I find trash and exploitation movies from overseas more educational in cultural climates and environment than art films (perhaps because they are more entertaining), but it really was great seeing an exploitation film set in Pakistan. The story is convoluted and at times doesn't make sense, but that adds to the bizarreness of this one. Highly recommended, though I might be a little biased because of my love for Mondo Macabro... but probably not since films like this are the reason I love them.

Aswang (The Unearthing) (1994,  Unrated)
Aswang (The Unearthing)
Excellent, low budget horror with a great monster and an fantastic villain. So over the top in every way, it's hard not to like. And it's put out by Mondo Macabro, so it has to be good.
6
The Clonus Horror (1979,  R)
The Clonus Horror
The little film Michael Bay completely ripped off for The Island. However, this is a chilling allegory with a lot of heart and a much darker feel. An excellent story with lots of sympathetic characters, some of them not even human, and dark political satire along with some very cool scenes and imagery. Very good stuff.

Deathless Devil - Turkish Pop Cinema Double Bill (,  Unrated)
Deathless Devil - Turkish Pop Cinema Double Bill
Wow wow fun times. What Casino Royale should have aspired to, Copperhead could kick bonds ass while doing summersaults (literally). Great fight moves, particularly the oft used, "Jump on Guys" move. Wonderful. Once they got Tarkan up here it will be getting Five Easy Stars. Hillarious. Tarkan and his dog, er, I mean wolf Kurt are the greatest dream team of all time.

The Living Corpse (Zinda Laash) (1967,  Unrated)
The Living Corpse (Zinda Laash)
Dracula the way it should have been told in the first place, with musical numbers! Mondo Macabro continues to impress with their selection of films from overseas to showcase here in North America. More melodramatic than a Guy Maddin film, with some questionable filmmaking moments (my favourite being when the actors are obviously waiting to run down the stairs until the director yells "Action") and a kick ass vampire eating baby sequence. Well, maybe not, but the thought is what counts, isn't it?

Il Mulino delle donne di pietra (Mill of the Stone Women) (1960,  Unrated)
Il Mulino delle donne di pietra (Mill of the Stone Women)
Creepy horror film from France. Some striking imagery and an interesting plot. Great DVD from Mondo Macabro.

The Old Temple (Purana Mandir) (1984,  Unrated)
The Old Temple (Purana Mandir)
Atmospheric and fun Bollywood horror. Surprisingly, it's very, very entertaining and you can also play "guess the stolen soundtrack", but word to the wise, always guess Friday the 13th and you'll be right 99% if the time.

Golok setan (The Devil's Sword) (1984,  Unrated)
Golok setan (The Devil's Sword)
Awesome Indonesian insanity. Watch Barry Prima kick ass along with crocodile men, evil magicians and the flying guillotine. A lot of fun.

L'assassino è costretto ad uccidere ancora (The Killer Must Kill Again) (1975,  Unrated)
L'assassino è costretto ad uccidere ancora (The Killer Must Kill Again)
Very strong giallo with a great killer played by Antoine. I really dug how this played out like a "High and Low" of who the killer affected. The car stealing couple were interesting as was the dogged husband with the wealthy wife. Another great Mondo Macabro release.

Mais ne nous délivrez pas du mal (Don't Deliver Us From Evil) (2006,  Unrated)
Mais ne nous délivrez pas du mal (Don't Deliver Us From Evil)
Yes it's randy and a little shocking, but the overall feel of the film is so blasphemous that it's not at all surprising how controversial it is. Also, what a kick ass ending! From what I understand this is based on the same case as Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures and works as a worthy, sleazier companion piece.

Escalofrío (Satan's Blood) (1977,  Unrated)
Escalofrío (Satan's Blood)
Great Spanish horror flick about an unwitting couple who meet some old friends (even though they cannot remember them at all) and embark on a Satanic night of wonders... well, group sex and murder. Good film with some great set pieces and a good script. Thanks Mondo Macabro for releasing these hidden gems.

Perawan disarang sindikat (Virgins From Hell) (1987,  Unrated)
Perawan disarang sindikat (Virgins From Hell)
Awesome Indonesian trash! Thank God for Mondo Macabro or I would never get the chance to see these fantastic cheesefests. A all girl biker gang are captured by a evil madman and have to fight their way out, kicking ass and killing everyone who stands in their way. Apparantly Indonesia was trying to copy American exploitation films (particularly WIP films) and it's a riot seeing what how they interpret the films they see coming from overseas. A great watch, and disregard the retarded "Virgins are raped...vigins are killed..." Plot synopsis on Flixster. Whoever wrote that can take the pickle out of their ass anytime. Wooooo!

Sexorcista Satanico Pandemonium (1975,  Unrated)
Sexorcista Satanico Pandemonium
Though I'm not a huge fan of nunsploitation, I decided to give this one a shot since it's a Mondo Macabro release and I tell ya, it's actually pretty cool. A nun gets up to all sorts of naughtiness, some quite sexy and others quite disturbing. Definitely not for the whole family on Xmas eve, but it does have it's time and place. Also, it is quite artistically done sleaze, so you can feel all highbrow while wallowing in filth.

Born of Fire (1987,  Unrated)
Born of Fire
Another great release from Mondo Macabro that I wouldn't have seen otherwise. What we have here is a British/Arabic horror/mysticism film mostly taking place in Turkey. There's a lot of meaning behind this little gem though it could be interpreted in many ways. Easily compared to El Topo and Holy Mountain (wrongly referred to as The Magic Mountain on the back of the DVD. Also, they misprint Hugh Grant as High Grant in the "About the Film" section. C'mon folks, buy Mondo Macabros awesome DVDs so they can at least afford a proof reader) in it's melding of genre cinema with mysticism. As with all Mondo Macabro DVDs, this is also to offbeat to miss if you're into strange cinema.

The Mansion of Madness (Edgar Allan Poe: Dr. Tarr's Torture Dungeon) (1973,  R)
The Mansion of Madness (Edgar Allan Poe: Dr. Tarr's Torture Dungeon)
It's not hard to believe that the director of this also collaborated with Jodorowsky. A crazy and inventive film that at times will make your jaw drop.

Alucarda, la hija de las tinieblas (Sisters of Satan) (Innocents from Hell) (Mark of the Devil 3) (1978,  R)
Alucarda, la hija de las tinieblas (Sisters of Satan) (Innocents from Hell) (Mark of the Devil 3)
Another awesome Mondo Macabro release. Young girls are tempted by Satan in a nunnery... just don't read the title backwards if you don't want to know what happens.

Crazy Love (1987,  Unrated)
Crazy Love
A coming of age story for losers, Crazy Love is an adaption of a Charles Bukowski short story. Though it could be called self indulgent (by my wife in particular) this sad, disturbing fairy tale is always intriguing and entertaining. It's beautifully directed and the acting is excellent, but be prepared for some unsavoury scenes. However, if you're up to it and depressing, warped drama is up your alley, this film should be your cup of tea... or whiskey if you're anything like Bukowski. The drunk.

Watcher in the Attic (Edogawa Rampo ryoki-kan: Yaneura no sanpo sha) (1976,  Unrated)
Watcher in the Attic (Edogawa Rampo ryoki-kan: Yaneura no sanpo sha)
Very good Rampo adaptation and a great Mondo Macabro disc as well. Weird sex and creepiness abound.

Snake Dancer (1976,  Unrated)
Snake Dancer
The touching story of a girl and her snake. And trust me when I say this is a "touching" story.
Generally I shy away from straight up sexploitation films, but since this is a Mondo Macabro release I was intrigued, and not very disappointed. It takes place in South Africa in the late seventies, when the church and politicians had the gall to frown upon a naked woman getting it on... ahem, dancing with a snake. It's a story of rebellion against repression you've seen a thousand times before, but never quite like this.
Oddly enough, I had rented this years ago in the VHS days and thought this might be the same flick. I just remember being surprised... pleasantly, at how dirty it was. Nowadays though it's fairly tame, though in my older years I did enjoy the kitsch value.
