Despite its hype, Paranormal Activity is only sporadically chilling, often funny, but to some extent, worthy. What doesn't work here, however, is the level of tension. It dissipates far too quickly at times and the number of fadeouts cut-short moments of gradual suspense. I wasn't surprised when I saw quite a few members of the audience nodding off. As a viewer, a movie like this needs to hold you, and even when you want a break, it needs to stay with you and retain its atmosphere. The couple in this movie, specifically the woman, [mild spoiler] is basically trying to escape from this demon that has followed her for years, and although we don't need to exactly know her history, we need to feel that this terror is inescapable. Unfortunately for Paranormal Activity, this is not the case, and the only thing that truly works in this movie is the end, which is because it ends with a chill, something that can stay with you although a so-often utilized technique for these types of first person, low-budget movies. At times, it's almost used to a formula. |
