I've left off some of the more obvious ones like your Psychos and your Exorcists.

When a Stranger Calls (1979,  R)
When a Stranger Calls 5.0 Stars
One of the most effective and original slasher movies I've ever seen. The story follows the killer for the most part (as a character not just followiing him killing folk). The finale is absolutely terrifying.

Black Christmas (1974,  R)
Black Christmas 5.0 Stars
The greatest slasher movie of all time. The killer is a maniac, Margot Kidder plays a drunk slut and it's got John Saxon in it! He's fuckin' hilarious in this.

Of Unknown Origin (1983,  R)
Of Unknown Origin 5.0 Stars
Peter Weller (Robocop to you and me) versus a big rat that's moved into his nice apartment. It's a cool, effective little movie.

Amityville II: The Possession (1982,  R)
Amityville II: The Possession 5.0 Stars
I watched it without having seen that first one or reading the back of the DVD case (which ruins every plot twist in the film) and it scared the fuckin' pants off me. It's got Rocky Balboa's mate in it, an excellent actor. Great movie.

Dressed to Kill (1980,  R)
Dressed to Kill 5.0 Stars
FUCKING BONKERS. Some insane plot twists and beautifully staged camera work. De Palma is the greatest director of suspense alive today. The only person who can touch him is Dario Argento. This is one of De Palma's depraved, and therefore best, movies.

Suspiria (1977,  Unrated)
Suspiria 5.0 Stars
My favourite Argento. This fucking guy can take a cab ride in the rain and make it into a fucking horrific ordeal. He's a genius.

Sleepless (2001,  R)

Scarier than a big fucking scary thing. The sequence on the train at the beginning almost gave me a god damn heart attack.

The Serpent and the Rainbow (1987,  R)
The Serpent and the Rainbow 5.0 Stars
One of Wes Craven's best. Magic, snakes, spiders, people buried alive, decapitations and boobs. This film has everything.

Open Water (2004,  R)
Open Water 5.0 Stars
Filmed at the start like a cheap holiday TV programme and it's more effective because of it. The occasional shots where the camera accidentally bobs below the surface of the water to show dozens of sharks circling below are fucking terrifying. An excellent and original premise executed perfectly.

Shadows and Fog (1992,  PG-13)
Shadows and Fog 5.0 Stars
Sort of like Dracula if Woody Allen was playing Van Helsing as a nebbish New Yorker. Between the really funny bits it's actually pretty creepy. Hell of a cast too. Allen, Jodie Foster, John Malkovich, John Cusack and some other folk I've forgotten. Great film.
