Laberinto del fauno, El, (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006, R)
It's a story of a child but not meant for children. A very violent yet intriguingly moving tale that shows how a girl created her own fantasy amidst all the chaos in the real world. The music score particularly suits the pacing of the film. Guillermo Del Toro have shown time and again that he can create a visually moving picture with a somewhat creepy creatures lurking like none we have seen before in usually childish fantasy film. |

The Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai) (1954, Unrated)
Quite a long movie, but great to watch. It was legendary as it sets a standard on Samurai films. And the story is great as well, where a village's fate lied in the hands of seven brave men. Great performance by Toshiro Mifune. Johnny Depp must have been looking upon him for his Jack Sparrow character. |

Southland Tales (2006, R)
What a bloody mess of a film. So disappointed with Richard Kelly's sophomore effort. Too much texture and complication in the plot it feels like he was trying too hard to impress following his groundbreaking debut. The presence of the non-actors pretty much add to the mess. Well i have to praise The Rock for avoiding the stereotype of being an action star and parodied himself as Boxer Santaros. |

The Departed (2006, R)
The cult Asian film is getting a hollywood treatment adding it with a Scorcese touch. Just what i've expected from him - really violent and no-nonsense killings. Watching all the Hollywood heavyweights playing their characters brilliantly is a joy to watch that it requires repeated viewings, especially when one bashes on another. Mark Wahlberg is outstanding although having only the supporting role. |
