The Painted Veil (2006,  PG-13)
The Painted Veil 4.0 Stars
Beautiful cinematography, a fascinating and little bit different plot, Edward Norton('s hair), and Naomi Watts made this movie worth my time. I really enjoyed the sense of culture in the film: the opposition against the white people in China, even those who are simply helping. The climax of the love story was a little bit too cheesy (just the way it was shot; Naomi drops her dress to the floor, and Edward speed-walks over to her, grabs her face earnestly with both hands, and smooches her passionately), and a certain piano theme came back 3 or 4 times too many, but apart from that, this movie was an excellent little gem.

Not exactly a girl-friendly movie, through the excessive (though realistic) swearing, backstabbing, and violence, The Departed is still kinda fun. And it made me like Leonardo DiCaprio.

Little Children (2006,  R)
Little Children 3.5 Stars
A pretty good movie, but not very interesting apart from seeing Patrick Wilson (and Kate Winslet for the boys) naked. It paints an interesting (though probably untrue for the most part) psychological picture of suburbia, and Jackie Earle Haley is pretty darned good.

High School Musical 3.5 Stars
Even though the acting isn't stellar, the music is questionable, and the premise is ridiculous and cliche, there is something addictive and toe-tapping about High School Musical.

Goofy, extremely funny, sweet... the ending got a bit sappy, but apart from that, it was superb!

Waitress (2007,  PG-13)

Would have been perfect (or at least extremely satisfying) if Nathan's character hadn't been married. Really unique idea, great main character, Nathan looked adorable, and that's all that really matters. But I wouldn't see it again because it didn't make me feel good at the end, which I think was what I was expecting when I went to see it.

I guessed what Anthony Hopkins' character did basically as he did it... so that kind of ruined the movie for me, since it didn't seem like there was a very big mystery for Ryan to solve... If I hadn't figured it out, it would have been awesome though. :P A thriller with no action; a true psychological thriller. Stellar performances from Anthony and Ryan (of course... they're the best of their generations!), though Rosamund Pike's character sucked: shallow, typical, undeveloped, dull. Neat cinematography. A little boring & slow-paced though. Oh well.

Great concept, but really falls apart at the end. :P Of course, it's not really worthwhile without a good payoff (which is a central point of the movie), and since it doesn't have it... well, that kind of wrecks the movie. Still highly original and fantastic though. No less could be said of Charlie Kaufman.

Lagaan - Once Upon a Time in India 4.5 Stars
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. This movie is epic in proportions (at 3h 40) but it is worth sitting through the long running time. The cricket match goes on a bit too long, but apart from that, this movie is such a pleasure to watch. I love the blend of Indian and English (cultures as well as languages). The musical numbers are particularly impressive.
