Jumper (2008, PG-13)
Could a movie get much worse? I wanted to see this purely because of Jamie Bell, but to anyone with the same intentions: do not see this movie. The premise is that there are people who can 'jump,' i.e. teleport, and there are people chasing and killing them. Why are these people killing the jumpers? Well, because jumping is just too God-like to be acceptable! Only God should have such powers! Yes, cause that's a great reason to kill people and it makes so much sense. Right. This movie is crap. Hayden and Rachel have absolutely no chemistry. You can't believe what a complete idiot Hayden's character is, and in no way do you feel sorry for him; you almost want him to suffer at Sam Jackson's hands. The scraps of plot do not hold the action scenes together in any way. The best part of this movie was watching Jamie's facial hair magically change from scene to scene. Stay away. Stay far away. |

Iron Man (Ironman) (2008, PG-13)
I really enjoyed Iron Man. In particular, the effects are unbelievable. Seeing Iron Man in his suit wouldn't be particularly impressive on its own, but the movie shows Stark building the suit, and that's what's really interesting. The amount of detail that must have been put in is phenomenal. Downey Jr. did a superb job as Tony Stark, but all the other characters were one dimensional. It's easy to hate a villain like Obedias - all there is to him is evil. This is partly the fault of the source material, but hopefully in future Marvel movies the villains will be a bit more interesting/believable. A note: Stark, billionaire genius engineer that he is, sure has bad home security. |

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2) (2008, PG-13)
Of course the highlight of this movie was the effects (it certainly wasn't the plot). The creatures and sets are so imaginative; they look nothing like anything from any other movie. I really enjoyed the portrayal of the elves, though I wished there had been more of them - the Prince wants to destroy the humans to rule over... his sister? Lame. Where are his followers? The plot holes were laughable: if the Princess dies, the Prince dies. So why did Abe feel the need to give the Prince the last part of the crown? Abe did it to save the Princess, but how does that save her? The Prince couldn't have killed her in any case. Also, why didn't the Princess dispute the Prince's right to the Golden Army? And even if she didn't, why did it take Hellboy so long to do so? (answer: so that the heroes could have a big fight scene against the Golden Army) One thing this movie did do is show me that a Forgotten Realms movie about Drizzt is possible, and not just possible. It's necessary. Yes, Hellboy 2 did seem to just be Lord of the Rings (complete with Tree of Gondor) + R. A. Salvatore (down to the jade statue that turns into the Prince's 'companion' i.e. tree god), but it was still fantastic (literally) to watch, and gives me hope that Drizzt will make it to the big screen. |
