Australia (2008,  PG-13)
Australia
Unfortunately way too many fake looking shots (including bad green screen). The bad guy(s) weren't that distinctive nor was the story or the score. Moulin Rouge was a masterpiece, I expected the first real epic movie since 10 years, but it wasn't (at all) :(
The end probably got f**** up by the studio.
What a shame, seriously :(
Hope Baz will "come back" with his next film... someday.
2
Righteous Kill (2008,  R)
Righteous Kill
The two best and most charismatic actors ever in the worst movie since... years... or decades.
3
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008,  PG-13)
4
The Wrestler (2008,  R)
The Wrestler
100% standard Hollywood movie (you saw that story a million times) but (or exactly because of that) I loved it. Sad as hell. Great atmosphere (I'm not into that social environment in real life at all obviously). Great ending. Can't wait to watch it again on DVD.
And thank god there are still directors who don't (and hopefully never will) switch to digital cameras.
5
Watchmen (2009,  R)
Watchmen
Nothing special, pretty standard stuff, but still some good scenes. Nothing really great visually though (which is a big surprise, coming from the 300 director). Some really awful casting and just not epic at all unfortunately.
6
Slumdog Millionaire (2008,  R)
Slumdog Millionaire
(Again) not as great as I hoped it would be. Again 100% standard Hollywood story (which I usually like)... but the atmosphere didn't quite catch you... Afterall it was a little bit too much about the "Who wants to be a millionar" stuff.
Anyway, the cinematography was awesome though (as I could already tell from the trailer). As far as I can remember the best cinematography since the movie "Stay". I'm gonna watch it a second time in theatres just for the images. Probably the first time I had tears in my eyes just because of the cinematography.
7
Crank 2: High Voltage (2009,  R)
8
X-Men Origins - Wolverine (2009,  PG-13)
X-Men Origins - Wolverine
One of the worst crap movies I've seen in a while.. Very bad made, boring as hell.. and it was 140$ mio? Go watch Transformers 1 for 150$ mio and see the difference...
9
Star Trek (2009,  PG-13)
Star Trek
Finally a good summer blockbuster again. Sure, it was pure fast food entertainment, but great at that. The first Trek movie I was looking forward to. Probably has nothing to do with Star Trek (more Star Wars), but I don't really care about that. The only thing which came a little short was the score and the villain.
10
Terminator Salvation (2009,  PG-13)
11
Up (2009,  PG)
12
Angels & Demons (2009,  PG-13)
13
The Hangover (2009,  R)
14
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009,  PG-13)
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
I'm the greatest Bay fan ever lived but this one unfortunately was a disappointment... :( Still can't believe I'm writing this, but ya... I don't know why, but it had no real "Bay moments". Perhaps I'll like it more the second time.
15
Crossing Over (2009,  R)
Crossing Over
Unfortunately just 10% if not less of Crash.
16
Public Enemies (2009,  R)
Public Enemies
The movie itself would be a 2,5 out of 5. Because of the awful digital cinematography (ugliest movie in movie history) I'll give it one star. Michael Mann... you're now officially removed from my favorite directors list (previously you were on #1)
17
Coraline (2009,  PG)
Coraline
A little too long, the end too standard and the pacing was a little strange, but overall: Great movie. Awesome style, great atmosphere.
18
The Hurt Locker (2009,  R)
19
The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009,  R)
The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3
Unfortunately this another Scott movie (after Deja Vu) which base (story) just doesn't really do it... Besides that it's good to see Scott at least comes back with a little bit of his "new old style" (which he perfected in Man on Fire and Domino), but overall most of it looked like any other movie. Tony, please! Make another visual art masterpiece like Domino (hopefully with the Warriors remake).
