Milk (2008,  R)
Milk
I see what all the critical buzz is about. I forgot that I was watching a movie. This is the kind of movie that could make activists out of us all.
2
Fireflies in the Garden (2008,  R)
Fireflies in the Garden
Nicely shot, good to see Ryan Reynolds in a serious role, though apart from that all the big names are wasted (and they are so big and the movie is so small that it's hard to forget that you're watching Hayden Panettiere). I find that writing movies about writers is generally a bad idea, and though it could have been more punitive for the viewers, it still wasn't the best idea here. Pretty typical movie, nothing exciting, dialogue gets more and more stilted as it goes along.
3
Tropic Thunder (2008,  R)
Tropic Thunder
Strange movie. Took me about half an hour to get in to it. Proof that RDJr. is gorgeous no matter what.
4
Quantum of Solace (2008,  PG-13)
Quantum of Solace
What exactly was the plot? Or do I mean 'where'?
5
Elizabeth (1998,  R)
Elizabeth
Gorgeous, costumes in particular. I got kind of confused at the end, perhaps because the movie is supposed to be about Elizabeth and seemed to be more about her enemies instead. I also couldn't figure out what Robert was doing with the Spanish. The movie definitely made me want to see more of Elizabeth's reign (she came off as quite indecisive and dependent on her councillors in this movie), though I've heard that Elizabeth: The Golden Age is not very good.
6
Rendition (2007,  R)
Rendition
Intense, but important. The main Egyptian guy looked pretty white, which was almost certainly on purpose. Welcome to Hollywood racism: even in a movie criticizing rendition, the white American male saves the day.
7
Paris Je T'aime (2007,  R)
Paris Je T'aime
So many shorts that you can't keep track of them!
Some of them seemed complete, but some felt too short, to such an extent that it felt like part of the story was missing. Definitely centred more around the men than the women too, but oh well.
8
The Biggest Chinese Restaurant in the World (2008,  PG)
The Biggest Chinese Restaurant in the World
Not quite what I was expecting; I thought there would be more about the food, and interviews with the chefs would have been appreciated. Still, it was very interesting.
9
Eating Buccaneers (2009,  Unrated)
Eating Buccaneers
Saw this at the Victoria Film Festival. It was so much fun. It's totally ridiculous - a dark comedy - but in the best possible way. Definitely recommend it! Go Canada!
10
The Tiger's Tail (2006,  R)
The Tiger's Tail
I got really into this movie, even though it wasn't that great. Go figure. I got really annoyed at the doppelganger. :P

This Film is Not Yet Rated (2006,  NC-17)
This Film is Not Yet Rated
I felt self-righteous seeing this, because it's exactly what I believe. The MPAA is ridiculous. And they were pretty ballsey hiring a PI.
12
Stardust (2007,  PG-13)
Stardust
Lots of fun, and higher production value than I had expected.
13
Coraline (2009,  PG)
Coraline
Extraordinary! I was completely drawn in to her world. Visually astonishing and so detailed.
14
27 Dresses (2008,  PG-13)
27 Dresses
Completely unbelievable relationships, so what's the point? Katherine Heigl and James Marsden were both good fun, but seriously the character development was pathetic and the characters were pretty darned flat.
15
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008,  PG-13)
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
So much fun. Very enjoyable and feel-good. It's kind of absurd that the events take place in a day. Lee's British accent is... not good... but who really cares? Fabulous casting.
16
Vals Im Bashir (Waltz with Bashir) (2008,  R)
Vals Im Bashir (Waltz with Bashir)
Upsetting and beautiful. The animation is really fabulous, and the way Ari's journey unfolds is fascinating.
17
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007,  R)
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Weird. Awkward. Kind of boring. Lots of shooting and things going wrong, but not in a funny way, so...
18
Wendy and Lucy (2008,  R)
Wendy and Lucy
Noticeable cinematography: lots of still shots with one main object (ex. car, train, Wendy) moving, which I think echoes Wendy's journey, staying still and moving at the same time.
19
Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran (Monsieur Ibrahim) (2003,  R)
Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran (Monsieur Ibrahim)
Très amusant. Very warm colours.
20
Monsters vs. Aliens (2009,  PG)
Monsters vs. Aliens
Saw it in 3-D, which was really amazing. Lots of fun, not childish.
21
He's Just Not That Into You (2009,  PG-13)
He's Just Not That Into You
Sort of sweet and charming, but not really. I liked that it wasn't totally asinine, and actually tried to be intelligent. But it was a bit too preachy, ex. the 'title cards' seemed like commandments. Couldn't get over the ditziness/idiocy of Ginnifer Goodwin's character... how did her friends put up with her!? Some of the relationships (well, kind of all of them) seemed like they were trying to make something simple into something complicated. Get over yourselves, characters! -blows raspberry-
22
You Only Live Twice (1967,  PG)
You Only Live Twice
Yay Bond! Kind of absurd, but eh.
23
Slumdog Millionaire (2008,  R)
Slumdog Millionaire
Really well paced, story gimmick works really well - could easily have bombed if written badly - looks beautiful, great acting... but icky freeze frame at the end :P
24
Star Trek (2009,  PG-13)
Star Trek
AMAZING! Spent most of the movie wondering how they were going to put everything back to how it's supposed to be... silly me hehe. Just too bad that most of the characters didn't get much screen time. I smell a sequel!
25
Becoming Jane (2007,  PG)
Becoming Jane
There's a reason why period dramas come from literature. Merely tolerable, even carried by the highly capable Miss Hathaway.
26
Act of God (2009,  Unrated)
Act of God
I thought it would be a movie about how being struck by lightning had changed people's lives, but it was basically about how lightning has killed some people, and it seemed more fear mongering than anything. Also, the camerawork was highly irritating: having nothing visual to show to go along with the interviews, Baichwal simply shows pictures of clouds/sky moving at various speeds complete with psychedelic effects. So irritating. I would not recommend this movie to anyone.
27
Entre les Murs (The Class) (2008,  PG-13)
Entre les Murs (The Class)
Absolutely extraordinary and enrapturing. Realism that convinced me, for one.
28
Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009,  PG)
Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian
Way not as bad as I thought it would be. I like its innocence and sweetness; it's not a gross-out movie nor one in which all sorts of bad things happen to the good guys. Stiller could easily fall into ridicule, but does not.
29
X-Men Origins - Wolverine (2009,  PG-13)
X-Men Origins - Wolverine
Somehow doesn't have quite the excitement of X2, but a big step up from X3. Felt almost too straightforward & would have liked to see more of the secondary characters. Looked great though (the effects as well as Hughman!).
