Ghost World (2001,  R)

Monkeybone (2001,  PG-13)
Monkeybone
This is what happens when a film suffers from being too unrestrained. What should have been a clever dark fantasy about a comic-book artist who enters his own world is instead a textbook case of style over substance. Director Henry Selick - so wonderful with puppet animation - hasn't the faintest idea how to manipulate live human beings, which leaves Brendan Fraser and Bridget Fonda looking woefully bad.

Faust: Love of the Damned (2000,  R)
4
From Hell (2001,  R)
From Hell
This visually sumptuous horror thriller makes an excellent companion piece to Sleepy Hollow, with Johnny Depp starring as a tormented London police inspector whose opium habit produces (he believes) a glimpse into the depraved forces driving a serial killer dubbed Jack the Ripper, in the autumn of 1888. The fascinating, detail-laden screenplay is adapted from the equally dense Alan Moore/Eddie Campbell graphic novel, and Martin Childs's superlative production design drags the viewer through the heart of London's slums. Although frequently gruesome, this is a gorgeous example of pure cinema, and a treat for fans of razor-sharp suspense.

Road to Perdition (2002,  R)
Road to Perdition
This Depression-era drama is a gorgeous, flawless cinematic vision from director Sam Mendes, who understands his craft so well. Tom Hanks, Paul Newman and Jude Law are excellent on their performances in this gangster film based on the graphic novel.
6
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003,  PG-13)
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Wow! What a mind-blowing adventure of seven fiction characters in a team.
7
Immortel (ad vitam) (Immortal) (2004,  R)
8
Sin City (2005,  R)
Sin City
It's really fantastic action/suspense that looks like a real one as the following graphic novel.
9
A History of Violence (2005,  R)
A History of Violence
Fantastic black thriller about a small town hero with a horrific secret based on a graphic novel.
10
Die Bluthochzeit (The Wedding Party) (2005,  Unrated)
11
V for Vendetta (2006,  R)
V for Vendetta
Terrific story which follows from based on a graphic novel about the freedom and revenge of an anit-hero.
12
Art School Confidential (2006,  R)
Art School Confidential
Perfect comedy of a talent young artist (Max Minghella) who wants to become the world's greatest artists while studying in the art university. Sophia Myles looks so stunning as the young artist's dream girl.
13
The Fountain (2006,  PG-13)
The Fountain
The visual and special effects are good, but this film is really strange story about a man on his quest during three different time periods.
14
Southland Tales (2007,  R)
Southland Tales
Good indie movie, but quite strange story based on the graphic novel since Donnie Darko from director Richard Kelly who has been hotly anticipated. This story has it's a mind bending blend of cop thriller, action movie, post apocalypse science fiction fantasy and, predominantly, a biting satire on American politics.
Sarah Michelle Gellar does a wonderful performance as a porn star (too bad, no nudity scenes for her, but her sexy looking - whoo!), The Rock is so funny, as an amnesiac Hollywood action hero, in his acting when he found out someone getting killed that makes him muttering. And more famous cast including Seann William Scott (as the role of cloned cop), Christopher Lambert, Miranada Richardson, John Larroquatte, Justin Timberlake, Bai Ling, Kevin Smith appear in this satire movie.

300 (2007,  R)
300
This age-old tale of 300 Spartans' last stand based on a graphic novel is the most magificent battle I ever saw with amazing visual effects and fast and slow action motions onto the battle sequences. This epic film makes as Gladiator meets Sin City.
16
Stardust (2007,  PG-13)
Stardust
Amazing light-hearted fantasy-adventure of a man who falls in love with a shooting star - as Princess Bride meets Midnight Run. Michelle Pfeiffer is charm and quite funny as an evil witch.
17
Pathfinder (2007,  R)
Pathfinder
This new world of graphic, hard-core action film is a bit part of Dances With Wolves. Fine battle scenes between the Vikings and Indians as well as it's too much graphic violence.
18
30 Days of Night (2007,  R)
30 Days of Night
This vampire movie based on the graphic novel is so chilling and very different kind of vampires. Josh Hartnett makes a good performance as the local sheriff of an Alaskan town struggle to stay alive with a handful of residents and are eventually forced to make a stand against the undead predators for a month of darkness.
19
Persepolis (2007,  PG-13)
Persepolis
Magnificent! Rarely has a film been as emotionally resonant, deeply poignant and visually poetic as Persepolis - let alone an animated movie. Based on the highly acclaimed autobiographical graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, this is a coming-of-age story framed by religious intolerance, political repression and segregation. But above all, it's a work of art about the very foundations of the human spirit.
This never tries to make a hero or a victim out of Marjane - her flaws are what make her so irresistibly human. In the end, Marjane had to leave Iran and move to France. By means of Persepolis, it seems like she finally found a way to preserve the Iran she so deeply loves.

Wanted (2008,  R)
Wanted
This action-thriller based on a graphic novel is astoundingly over-the-top special effects. Thanks to the direction of Russian filmmaker Timur Beckmambetov, who delivered the visually inventive fantasty films Nightwatch and Daywatch. His hyperkinetic style leads a slick and outrageous edge to what is ostensibly xXx Meets Minority Report via The Matrix.
While the brilliant Angelina Jolie has the flashier role, James McAvoy is excellent in his first blockbusting lead, his Everyman looks ensuring that even when he's running around killing legions of bad guys, he doesn't look like an assistant at Abererombie & Fitch.

Largo Winch (2008,  Unrated)

Watchmen (2009,  R)
Watchmen
Spectacular! It should be a MA-rated (in America - R-rated) superheroes movie, not for children. This is how Alan Moore made the story of a universe of costumed crime fighters might actually work. Here, though, there is dark satire: Batman (now Nite Owl) can't get it up, impotent without his suit on; Wonder Woman (now Silk Spectre) carries the mountain of her mother's guilt (a previous Silk Spectre marooned in old-age); Superman (now Dr. Manhattan) is possessed with such powers he takes on the unreachable guise of a god. Best of all, there is Phillip Marlow or Sam Spade (now Rorschach), with his do-or-die morality and city-of-the-damned voiceover, the most hideously human of the bunch.
Zack Snyder appears to have been the right choice to take the job. 300 proved that he has an eye for visuals and knows how to adapt a graphic novel as faithful to its source as possible, but faithfulness and nice pictures don't necessarily make for a good movie.
Patrick Wilson makes a perfect performance as Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl. And I'm sure everyone will secretly fall in love with Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman) because she looks really sexy. The suits have been beautifully changed wherever necessary and also have the right effect. The Minutemen look kinda stupid, which is perfect for the superhero parody element of the book.
The special effects are really good, Dr. Manhattan looks awesome, Mars looks like you expect Mars to look and Rorschach's mask remains fun to see from start to finish. A giant, hairless blue man with it all hanging out, he comes care of a mo-capped Billy Crudup that's about 70 per cent successful - much better in close-up than the distracting mid-shots dominated by his blurry-blue CG cock.
