Atonement (2007, R)
To go by the previews and synopsis of this film, you expect a certain kind of story. What you get is something altogether different. Every moment of this movie has its own unique style to it. A terrific score, using sound effects such as a typewriter fused with music, only enhances the originality of this film. There are some areas in the story that tend to run longer than they feel they should, but in the end, you understand why they did, and it only makes you want to see the movie all over again. |

Eastern Promises (2007, R)
Slow moving at first, but once the story grips you, it's hard to turn away. Powerful performances, especially from star Viggo Mortensen, proving once again that he is one of the greatest actors of his generation. Director David Cronenberg thankfully keeps this film away from his all-too familiar bizarre territory. A terrific achievement all around. |

Gone Baby Gone (2007, R)
Ben Affleck's directorial debut is difficult to watch at times, and poses an interesting moral question that one could only know the answer to when faced with this situation themelves. Casey Affleck leads a cast of very talented actors, and proves himself to be worthy of many great roles. Worth seeing if for no other reason than Affleck. |

Lions for Lambs (2007, R)
Thought-provoking film on the war in Afghanastan. Both perspectives are shown, leaving it up to the viewer to decide what is right and what is wrong. Although at first, I wasn't really sure where this movie was going, as it progressed, I found it gained momentum and held my interest throughout. Recommended. |

There Will Be Blood (2007, R)
Paul Thomas Anderson, the brilliant mind behind Magnolia, brings this story about corruption and greed in turn-of-the-century America. The story itself tends to drag on, and never seems to get going. But it's Daniel Day-Lewis' amazing performance that holds your attention throughout. Easily one of the greatest performances I can remember. |
