Atonement (2007,  R)
Atonement 4.0 Stars
To go by the previews and synopsis of this film, you expect a certain kind of story. What you get is something altogether different. Every moment of this movie has its own unique style to it. A terrific score, using sound effects such as a typewriter fused with music, only enhances the originality of this film. There are some areas in the story that tend to run longer than they feel they should, but in the end, you understand why they did, and it only makes you want to see the movie all over again.

Terrific acting from a very talented cast and a well-written screenplay help to make this movie more than just another run-of-the-mill heist picture. Worth watching.

Charlie Wilson's War (2007,  R)
Charlie Wilson's War 3.5 Stars
Based on the true story of a congressman that quietly aids the CIA in supplying weapons to Afghanastan in their war against Russia. Good performances all around, but it's really Phillip Seymour Hoffman that makes the movie.

Eastern Promises 4.5 Stars
Slow moving at first, but once the story grips you, it's hard to turn away. Powerful performances, especially from star Viggo Mortensen, proving once again that he is one of the greatest actors of his generation. Director David Cronenberg thankfully keeps this film away from his all-too familiar bizarre territory. A terrific achievement all around.

Very scary and very original. Once this thrill-a-minute horror flick starts, it never lets up. Quite a twist at the end as well.

Anthony Hopkins delivers his trademark chilly performance in a twisty mystery that delivers a real punch at the end. It's worth watching, if for no other reason than to see the surprise ending.

Ben Affleck's directorial debut is difficult to watch at times, and poses an interesting moral question that one could only know the answer to when faced with this situation themelves. Casey Affleck leads a cast of very talented actors, and proves himself to be worthy of many great roles. Worth seeing if for no other reason than Affleck.

Ellen Page shines in this funny movie about an awkward teenager who gets pregnant and then seeks to find suitable parents to care for it. The rest of the cast is just as good, but Page really makes this movie.

Lions for Lambs 3.5 Stars
Thought-provoking film on the war in Afghanastan. Both perspectives are shown, leaving it up to the viewer to decide what is right and what is wrong. Although at first, I wasn't really sure where this movie was going, as it progressed, I found it gained momentum and held my interest throughout. Recommended.

Excellent movie from the Coen Brothers. This is one of those films that really requires a second viewing to fully understand everything that is happening. Quite an achievement, both in writing and acting, especially Javier Bardem in a powerful and chilling performance.

Paul Thomas Anderson, the brilliant mind behind Magnolia, brings this story about corruption and greed in turn-of-the-century America. The story itself tends to drag on, and never seems to get going. But it's Daniel Day-Lewis' amazing performance that holds your attention throughout. Easily one of the greatest performances I can remember.
