Faraway, So Close! (In weiter Ferne, so nah!) (1993, PG-13)
Though it may not be as good as the movie it follows, Wings of Desire, it is a beautiful continuation of story of a group of angels. Two of which have already "fallen" to Earth, and they are joined by another "fallen" angel. Thus continues the poetic philisophical journey that these angels go on, as they discover what it means to be human. |

Until the End of the World (Bis ans Ende der Welt) (1992, R)
The most ambitious Wim Wenders film. An odyssey shot on four continents, and a litany of international cities, the story follows a scientist played by William Hurt who is followed by a beautiful mystery woman, played by Solveig Dommartin, (who was also in Wings of Desire). They travel the globe as they race against time and try to out run bounty hunters, government agents and the bomb. A gorgeous cinematic masterpiece with an incredible sound track that includes U2, Talking Heads, Lou Reed, T-Bone Burnett, Peter Gabriel, Can, Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, R.E.M., Depeche Mode, andNick Cave and the Bad Seeds. |

Ridicule (1996, R)
How can you not love a movie where the openning scene is of one man pissing on another man? The title says it all, the movies' charm lies in the dialoge which is filled with wit, humor, and venom. Takes place in Louis 14th's court, where the WIT is king, and the king is about to lose his head. A beautifully shot film filled with decadance, greed, lust, betrayal, and lies. A must see. |

Andrei Rublev (1966, Unrated)
The best Russian film ever by Andrei Tarkovsky. The movie is just now coming out of being banned in Russia. The movie follows the life of Russia's best Byzentine artist, Andrei Rublev, through the black plague, several wars, and the invasion of the mongolian armies. A beautifully shot film with a back drop covering some of the early Russian historical events. |

The Blue Kite (Lan feng zheng) (1993, Unrated)
The best Chinese movie ever made, and it is STILL banned there! Covers the period from the rise and take over of the red army. Re-education of the populace, and the four year plans and their aftermath. Brutally honest, and humanistic. A must see for everyone interested in life within Communist China. |

Kikujiro (2000, PG-13)
One of my favorite Beat Takeshi films. Yes, sweet and beautiful aren't words you normally use to describe Beat's films. But this is his most artistic and lyrical film ever. It is a road story that follows a good for nothing thug, and a little boy as they travel across Japan in search of his mother. Beautifully shot, hilarious and sad at the same time. Don't miss this one. |
