The Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai) 5.0 Stars
WOW! THE real Japanese epic! More than perfect, this film is one of the most beautiful, best told, most moving and effective film EVER. Not only by its amazing cinematography, but its colorful characters, they're actually alive! A battle movie that doesn't need graphic violence to be great! There's no words to describe its perfection, Akira Kurosawa is a genius.

Vertigo (1958,  PG)

A perfect film by Hitchcock! Beautifully crafted. Action all over the place, and the climax just blew me away. A movie abut desire lead to obsession. The transformation from "good" to the "wicked character" in the movie. One of the most beautiful cinematographies I had ever seen, and some new camera works, like the zoom-dolly combination to create that "vertigo" emotions among the audience. Hitchcock will always be remembered as a genius!

The perfect musical! "Singin' in the rain" tune still lives in our minds, a very happy and warming movie that portraits transition between mute cinema to audio.

It may be slow, but also may be one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen... Satyajit Ray's vision of poor families in India is so deep and real you just get along with every character in the movie. Though acting is really bad in my opinion, the characters are so well developed you almost didn't notice the bad acting.
There's some scenes that dialog is substituted with just music, and it does a perfect way to transmit even more feeling than conventional words. A moving masterpiece, the first in the Apu trilogy, I need to watch the two other films!

SPECTACULAR!!! Nearly to perfection! The story of an old actress from silent movies that must deal with her decadence after talking films appeared. She became completely insane, even "capturing" with gifts a young writer just not to be alone. Gloria Swanson is awesome as Norma! And the whole cast did an excellent job too! Billy Wilder made and excellent film-noir, entertaining, and very catchy. A classic!

East of Eden (1955,  PG)
East of Eden 5.0 Stars
A masterpiece by the genius director Elia Kazan! A movie about the eternal battle between the "good" and "bad" brothers; about family trouble, lies, love, etc. A wonderful script, and wonderful performances, introducing legend James Dean. James Dean is outstanding, with that rebel looks, even inspiring a new generation.
This movie also explores youth... the need for attention, rebelling against the laws, jealousy, and a little of naiveness. I even got a connection with the character Caleb, visionary and inspired by passion. A very good character. One of the best movies of the 50's, though very underrated...

Amazing! Beautiful, in its decadence context. One of the best examples of the Nouvelle Vague. Jean-Pierre Léaud is great as Antoine, maybe Truffaut's greatest achievement in directing. This movie practically left me speechless, great movie!

Smiles Of A Summer Night (1957,  Unrated)
Smiles Of A Summer Night 5.0 Stars
Another excellent film by Bergman!! A movie about the battle of the sexes, which sometimes avoided uncomfortable themes or taboos and told the story straight without missing any detail. One of the bitchiest movies out there, it almost made me remember All About Eve, because it described what some women may do to achieve what they want. This time, they're after men, almost placing them as objects of desire than like a "person". It plays with emotions, and shows some great performances by Gunnar Björnstrand and Eva Dahlbeck. This movie really was ahead of its time! Another theme was adultery, treated in a way very particular. There were many cases of adultery, and the one more surprising was by the preacher boy, who dedicated his life to God. So, it give him a human characteristic, the desire for sex, which not even his theology career may take away from him. Virginity: and the way characters react to it, if they're not virgin they enjoy sex... if they are virgin, can only think of ways to get rid of it and trying to take fears away. And finally, the roulette scene was genius, it had me tied to my seat waiting for something to happen. An excellent film that explores some aspects of human nature, separately for men and for women,

Actually I had no good expectations on this one, but it completely blew me away! The cast EVERYONE does an incredible job, obviously James Dean makes the best performance in the movie. It treats stereotypes in such a punching manner that I couldn't believe it was made on 1956! Beautiful film in every aspect, set in Texas with some great sceneries to please your eyes. Though a little long, you won't feel its lenght.

Rebel Without a Cause (1955,  PG-13)
Rebel Without a Cause 5.0 Stars
James Dean's greatest performance! He makes one of the most memorable characters in the 50's in a movie about the loss of innocence and conflicts on disturbed youth. With some of the most thrilling scenes I have seen, without all those special effects. That's a lot to say. American classic!

Rear Window (1954,  PG)

Hitchcock does it again. A great thriller. Truly he's the best romantic - murder director ever. He keeps you the whole film tied to your seat, and I had to watch several times the climax just to understand its brilliance, because it was something there that amazed me for a while.
I loved the neighborhood theme, how its treated as a big family in which every member should care about each others to remain peaceful. Apparently Jefferies (later his two friends) were the only ones who cared too much about what's going on their street. But, was it for human sensibility or just curiosity? I think Jefferies really wanted to know if Mr. Thorwald killed his wife or not, more than curious he showed a huge necessity to help his own neighborhood. The Stella character I would say was involved with the mystery because she was just too curious about it, and wanted to solve a crime by herself. On the other hand, Lisa's character I find her more complex. Maybe she was curious, maybe she cared about the poor woman, or maybe she just wanted to call for Jefferies's attention. He wanted a lady who isn't perfect, but one who takes risks. That was the perfect opportunity to show him how "brave" she was.
Overall, Hitchcock manages to make another directing achievement, the cinematography is stunning and I must say I didn't saw the ending coming. Great movie!

Alice in Wonderland (1951,  G)
Alice in Wonderland 4.0 Stars
I watched it today, it's been like 10 years since the last time I watched it. After reading Alice in Wonderland and Throught the Looking-Glass, this movie doesn't even reaches Carroll's genius, but still is very entertaining to watch. There's some moments really amazing like the tea party or the final chase. Some characters are even better in the movie than in the book, for example the Queen.
Very original, though you can see the responsibles for this movie probably were on drugs or something.
There's something that really got my attention, the "matriarchy" of the Kingdom, in which the Queen has the absolute power and the King has to ask permition to the Queen for every simple detail.
Very good childern's film, that adults would enjoy.
