American Beauty (1999,  R)
American Beauty 5.0 Stars
Beautiful, hilarious, and compelling. It attacks the emotional and spiritual complacency of American culture and really brings to light how poisonous a self-absorbed and shallow lifestyle can be, and how that causes pain and alienation within a family. All this while being funny and great to watch! One scene, in which a character describes a sort of revelation, was for me (and remains) one of the most significant and meaningful moments in film. It is also tremendously melodramatic.

Big Fish (2003,  PG-13)
Big Fish 5.0 Stars
Tim Burton hits the nail on the head with this movie. It's called Big Fish because its about a family of huge fish that can talk. Then they are abducted by aliens and fly to the moon, where they are brainwashed, outfitted with lasers and rocket launchers, and sent back to earth to assasinate Mr. T. Mr. T of course then pwns them like n00bs.

The Boondock Saints (1999,  R)
The Boondock Saints 4.0 Stars
An awesome movie that asks some moral questions that are both outrageous and legitimate at the same time. That, and its just plain cool, regardless of some potentially sub-par production quality.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969,  PG)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 5.0 Stars
"You know, you should have let yourself get killed a long time ago when you had the chance. See, you may be the biggest thing that ever hit this area, but you're still two-bit outlaws. I never met a soul more affable than you, Butch, or faster than the Kid, but you're still nothing but two-bit outlaws on the dodge. It's over, don't you get that? Your time is over and you're gonna die bloody, and all you can do is choose where. "

The moral of this story?

Life is sad, but totally sweet to watch.

Casino Royale (2006,  PG-13)
Casino Royale 4.5 Stars
Probably the best Bond film ever made from a technical standpoint. Virtually every aspect of the movie is excellent, although Sean Connery isn't in it, so it loses half a star. Daniel Craig plays the most human and the most hardcore Bond yet.

The Color of Money (1986,  R)
The Color of Money 5.0 Stars
I think this is Martin Scorsese's best movie. Whether this movie was a direct influence on Wes Anderson and Guy Ritchie and every slick movie since is debatable, maybe it is just representative of the style of every cool movie made ever since, but "The Color of Money" capitalizes on cinematography, drama, and music placement or whatever you call awesome music queues in ways that have obviously been emulated a billion times over. This is a movie that finally nails the sentimental idea of regaining your place in life after suffering a major blow without being absolute crap. At no point must you wince with the overbearing gooiness that normally assaults the viewer in a movie about rebuilding your life. It's awesome, you should totally watch it at least twice.

The Darjeeling Limited 4.5 Stars
It will be so good I can barely stand it.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE:
I saw it, and I am going to see it again. Maybe not his best, maybe not as poignant, and maybe lacking the climactic cathartic sequences of his other movies, but still beautiful and altogether fantastic. I loved it, and if Wes Anderson fails to progress much further than revisiting these themes with this aesthetic over and over again I will not be let down.

Donnie Darko (2001,  R)
Donnie Darko 4.5 Stars
I watched this movie a few years ago and I was really tired so I had no clue what the junk actually happened. Also, Frank the bunny terrified me. Having watched it again I find that A) It both makes sense and is excitingly cool. and B) Frank is not that scary. If you like spiritual dilemmas, time travel, mental illness, thinking about things, or social marginality you'll probably enjoy it.

The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring 4.0 Stars
Thoroughly enjoyable and totally epic, the only real problem with The Fellowship of the Ring is, like the sequels, its inability to capture the elements of the story that make it truly compelling. While the Lord of the Rings books are certainly about hobbits and rings and all that fantasy jibber-jabber, they are even more an analogy to the struggle between good and evil in modern times. While not at all an allegory, the story itself is a reflection on very real elements of moral conflict, and the movies fail to capture that altogether.

A pretty cool movie. Definitely a must for anybody who likes sci-fi stuff, but a little out there for those who have a stunted imagination. Also, the good aliens that show up at the end are absolutely idiotic looking.
